The wonderful world of Sid and Marty Krofft

If you weren’t a kid in the '70s, you really missed something special: The world of Sid and Marty Krofft. The upcoming release of the new “Land of the Lost” movie has been hitting my nostalgia button big-time. I’m not sure I’m interested in seeing the Will Ferrell movie, but it has made me reflect back on all the shows I used to love. And, of course, it makes me want to sing the “Land of the Lost” theme song.

My favorite Krofft show had to be “Lidsville.” (Watch the theme song here.) This show about a boy who goes to a magic show and ends up falling into another world through the magician’s hat was absurd in the best way possible. Almost all the characters were hats. That’s right, it was a show about talking hats. Even better it gave “Munsters'” refugee Butch Patrick another chance to be on TV, as Mark, the boy who gets lost in the hat, and featured Charles Nelson Reilly as magician Horatio J. Hoodoo. Yes indeed, there was much more to Reilly’s career than his stint on “Match Game.” It’s hard to believe that this classic show only ran for one season.

Rhino Theatrical
"H.R. PuffnStuff" will make you want to sing and dance.

“H.R. Pufnstuf” was another odd delight. (Watch the theme song here.) Jack Wild, who played the Artful Dodger in “Oliver!”, starred as Jimmy, a boy who has a magical flute named Freddie, and who is enticed to board a seemingly magical boat, only to find out it’s controlled by the evil Witchiepoo (Krofft favorite Billie Hayes). Luckily, Jimmy is rescued by the inhabitants of Living Island, including H.R. Pufnstuf, an orange dragon -- though I always thought he was a frog when I was a kid.

I even remember going to see the big-screen version of "Pufnstuf" in 1970 (Mama Cass Elliot played a small role) in a local theater that was packed with kids eating candy cigarettes, Bottle Caps and Chuckles. The film is currently out of print, but a DVD release is in the works.

I watched all the rest, too. “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters” (watch the theme song here) reminded me of my Southern California upbringing, and featured Johnnie Whitaker, best known for playing Jody on “Family Affair.”

The “Bugaloos” had arguably the best theme song (watch it here), and featured a rock band that had members named Joy, Courage, I.Q. and Harmony.  It practically dripped of all things 70s. Other series included “Far Out Space Nuts” and “The Lost Saucer,” which featured both Jim Nabors and Ruth Buzzi. Set wackiness factor to 10.

Then there was “The Krofft Superstars,” (watch that ultra-trippy theme song here), which included “Dr. Shrinker,” “Wonderbug” (watch theme), “Big Foot and Wild Boy” (watch theme), and “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.”

If you want to get a sense of the acting on these shows, check out this scene from “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.” It’s about at the level of Adam West’s old “Batman” TV show. In other words, just right for small kids.

As a teenager, I definitely wondered if the Kroffts, who actually lived in my neighborhood, had indulged in some substances to inspire their shows. But the duo once told USA Today, “No drugs involved. You can’t do drugs when you’re making shows. Maybe after, but not during.” Still the implication helped add to the show’s coolness cache.

Both Kroffts are still alive and well and recently spoke to the New York Times about trying to get some of their other series to the big screen. They actually said they’d like to see Johnny Depp take on the role of Witchiepoo. Sounds perfect for Depp.

TVLand paid tribute to the duo at this year’s TVLand Awards with a musical montage of all their theme songs, featuring Cyndi Lauper and Clint Black (part one and part two).

Absolutely have to see Land of the Lost for the nostalgia factor alone...loved the show (humming the theme song now) even though the Sleestaks seriously creeped me out as a child.  I was also a huge Sigmund and the Sea Monsters fan.
I remember watching those shows as a kid.  Loved Sigmund, HR Puffinstuff, Wondebug, Dr. Shrinker.  Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.  They don't make shows like that anymore
Born in 1966 and absolutely a fan of all these shows!!  I still get random parts of the Bugaloo's song stuck in my head every once in awhile. Thanks for a walk down memory lane.
At 43 I admit that the early 70s TV of the Krofft's was my weekly oasis. Every Saturday morning I would bound downstairs to watch all of the shows mentioned..while munching a bowl of Freakies cereal. Even then you knew that the acting was campy - the wholesomeness and fantastical storylines kept a young mind entranced.  I will probably see the new Land of the Lost movie, when it comes out to video...but I REALLY enjoyed the nostalgic replaying recently of ALL of the old episodes of LOTL on SciFi channel.  What a step back into simpler times. NO sex, no bad language, minimal sets, repeating animations and still entertaining after all these years! Thanks Sid and Marty and Sci-fi Channel for reviving those long languishing neurons. Far Out Space nuts was my favorite! Bob Denver I miss you! and HONK if you loved HONK!
I loved Lidsville and The Bugaloos. That was a great tribute on TV Land Awards.
I loved Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, the Bugaloos and Land of the Lost -- was just talking to co-workers about the shows and they had never heard of them -- how sad!!
These guys and thier work has been a huge inpiration on what I do!
I love it!
We need a HR movie more than another Transformers!!!
www.elmwoodproductions.com
Talk about the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test...those guys must have had a jug around at all times.  Definately trippy.
Oh yes, big fan of Sid and Marty. Years later, my brother and I still have the uncanny ability to remember songs from these shows, particularly the "Bugaloos." And all those wacky colors and characters! It was a great time to be a kid.
I loved these shows. They actually had a theme park called "The World of Sid and Marty Kroft" here in Atlanta in the 70's.  It was in the CNN building and featured a pinball game ride where you rode in the ball.  Pretty neat stuff.
Wounder Bug Was my all time favorite. It made Knight Rider more real to me.
I LOVED Lidsville, Wonderbug, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters and Dr. Shrinker, especially.  And I can still sing the Electra Woman and Dyna Girl theme.  Best of all, I do a great Slestack imitation.  I don't think I ever missed watching these on Saturday morning and I'd love to see them again on DVD.

I thought the idea of making a movie of "Land of the Lost" was a pretty bad idea, and I have no iterest in seeing it or any others remade until you said something about Johnny Depp.  Johnny Depp as Witchiepoo -- THAT I'd pay to see.  Thanks for the flashback!
Yeah, I was in grade school in the early 70's, and I watched all of those shows.  My favorite was H.R. Pufnstuff, but didn't care much for the Bugaloos.  I was just a kid, but I knew Sid & Marty HAD to be on drugs to make these shows.  Trippy.
What wonderful memories it all brings back...  Racing home after school (or better yet, staying home sick) to watch the shows, hoping your favorite was on during the hour, singing the themesongs, and wondering why our world wasn't the technicolor wild-scope of the Krofft world (where was our Sigmund, Freddie, or ailens?).  Thanks!
Yes!  I loved the Sid & Marty Krofft Shows, and like you, found Lidsville to be my favorite, too.  Puf'n'Stuff was also great, and I'll admit to liking the few episodes of Space Nuts that aired.

But the new "Land of the Lost Movie?"  No thanks.  Will Ferrell being Will Ferrell...seen it far too many times, and also, the trailers aren't grabbing me.

If Lidsville comes to DVD (maybe it has?), count me in!
How could you forget the Banana Splits? My all time favorite!
h r puff n stuff was my fave..wish i still had that lunch box.
Oh yes I remember all of those shows and loved them. A few years ago I was in Chinatown in San Francisco and they had a bobblehead Pufnstuf. I just had to buy it.
I remember it as the Krofft Supershow. What surprised me most is that Captain Cool was portrayed by Michael Beck.
I think I may have been a bit too old for some of the  stuff that the Kroft's put on.  I guess even then I knew it was sorta cheesy.   HOWEVER, I did have the hots for Dyna Girl played by Judy Strangis-Room 222 alumnus and a.k.a. Mean Mary Jean-Superstar Machine from Plymouth commercials.  And Diedre Hall as Electra Woman; put her in good training for the soaps.
Some twelve years ago I went to an auction at the Beverly Hills Hilton to see Sid and Marty sell off their warehouse of old props; sleestak costumes (neoprene dive suit with glued on scales), the original PufnStuf singing flute (under glass) and many, many marionettes from Marty's early years in Paris.  The top selling item was some exec bid about $40k for the Steven Spielberg puppet from the series "Splitting Image" - their prime time competition for the muppet show.  Sid was like a Mafioso and he ran the business.  Marty was the creative side - still dying his hair and hitting on every young man in the room.  Billy Barty and Billy Hayes were both there, as well.  I had fun but was outbid by $1k for the original Sleestak skull!
Oh man. Just caught a bunch of episodes of the original Land of the Lost on SciFi this last Memorial Day weekend and was I ever in flashback mode. This was back when cartoons ruled Saturday mornings and it seemed like the Krofft shows were the majority of those cartoons. Even after all these years I noticed the LOTL episodes seemed smart and the quality of writers they used has explained much of this. I commend the Krofft brothers for being such a part of my youth.
i loved all these shows, and as a young gay boy, had crushes on all the male leads. and i wanted to BE electra woman (okay, i would have settled or Dyna Girl, or Susan (the girl from wonderbug).
Such great stuff for kids..i bought video collections and my nephew loves them!
Were the Banana Splits a Sid & Marty Kroft production? Wow! I remember collecting some cereal box tops to get their toy dunebuggy!
I loved Land of the Lost as a kid. I recently watched some old episodes of the show. It's a lot cheesier now than when I was a kid, but that's to be expected. I'm not sure if I'm going to watch the movie with Will Farrell in it. It looks like they tried to make it a comedy. Well, the original series wasn't a comedy and I wish they wouldn't have changed the format. Oh well..
Early on, the Kroffts had a live puppet show with H R Pufnstuff for a while at Six Flags over Texas (the original Six Flags). I remember seeing that show a few times.
Of all the TV shows, I remember the Banana Splits best.
Love... love... love the Kroft Superstars.  And I'm thrilled that you included the links to the intros... my husband thought that I'd made these shows up.
Wow! A blast from the past!  I looked through the listing of all the Krofft shows, but only remember "Land of the Lost" and "Wonderbug".  What a bunch of fun and silly shows, though.  I would have loved to have seen "The Lost Saucer" with Jim Nabors and Ruth Buzzi!  Can't believe they would have signed onto that in what was the heyday of their careers!

I recently released a book all about growing up in the '70s.  http://www.my70sbook.com - A lot of fun memories like this about all of our experiences as teenagers.  There was nothing like the '70s - how fun to reminisce about our Saturday mornings in front of the boob-tube!
Growing up in Atlanta in the 70s, I was lucky enough to go to the Wonderful World of Sid and Marty Krofft theme park (of sorts) in downtown Atlanta at the Omni. It was just like their shows--frenetic and totally entertaining.
I have my H R PufnStuf metal lunchbox with original glass thermos.  Still in great shape from my Kindergarten days way back when.  Love it!
Lost Saucers had a pet dorse.  Part dog, part horse.  I loved those shows.  Sleestaks creeped me out.
Here in Canada, Teletoon Retro shows the Banana Splits every afternoon. I sing the theme song to my 6-month-old twin boys all the time! The thing is the Splits were the best thing about the show -- the crappy animation inbetween their bumpers was terrible... then again, I guess we weren't too discriminating when we were sitting in front of the TV with a bowl of Froot Loops on a Saturday morning.
What about the Lost Saucer?  That was my absolute favorite.  Jim Nabors, Ruth Buzzi and (the absolute best animal sidekick of all time)  Dorse!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_Saucer
I watched them all, they were definitely part of my routine, though I think the nostalgia makes them even better.  I think what makes them touch a chord with us now is that we had limited choices then.  With fewer channels, more of us were watching the same thing on Saturday morning. I bet some of us remember the Groovie Ghoulies, too!(and yes, I ate Freakies, too!).  Nice to look back and smile.
I'm a bit depressed about the Land of the Lost movie.  It looks like they, and I never thought it would be possible to say this, dumbed it down.

I loved Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, H.R.Pufnstuff, and all the superstars, bust mostly the Bugaloos.  There are DVDs of most of the shows available (at least a few episodes of each).
I guess every generation has their great memories. Used to LOVE Land of the Lost.  I was always thought the jeweled pedestal/table that the lead Sleestak (Enoch) would mess with was SUPER cool.  Emergency (Squad 51- I had the Johnnie and Roy action figures and the truck)  The original Star Trek action figures, Intellivision, (Remember George Plimpton?) My kids would laugh at the stuff I loved back then.  Much simpler times. Imagination still counted for something... I remember candy cigarettes.  Hard to believe they actually sold those to kids!
Does anyone remember the show called ARK II? It was about a talking chimp a girl and boy and their uncle I believe. They would set and explore in a teched out version of a RV? Was that part of the Krofft satruday morning lineup?
Witchiepoo was my favorite.  Can't believe no one mentioned her.
Lost Saucer and Land of the Lost were my favorites, with Uncle Croc's Block following close third. I got the LOTL DVD box set about a year ago and have been watching the shows bit by bit since then.

Yeah, the acting was mediocre at best but the writing on those first two seasons was awesome. I'm kinda hoping the original cast has cameos in the film.
I loved the Bugaloos- I even had a Bugaloos board game! I remember idolizing Joy, I thought she was so pretty (and I probably thought they were all groovy, too).  Now watching the intro cracks me up - I forgot that Martha Raye was Benita Bizarre!
I remember them well...I was one of a few hundred people that worked at the World of Sid and Marty Krofft in the OMNI Center in Atlanta,Georgia in 1976. It was an indoor amusement center that was way before it's time. And unfortunately in the wrong location. Atlanta, at that time, was not ready for fantasy world and characters found within. It was a fantastic feat of engineering and design and I hope some of it still survives some 30 years later. One of the few things I have from working there is my ID card.
I'd like to offer a couple of corrections/clarifications. First, "The Banana Splits" was produced by Hanna-Barbera, not the Kroffts. The episodes are currently being shown weekdays on the Boomerang network.
And the DVD of the "Pufnstuf" movie isn't "in the works" — it's available now. I bought it a couple of weeks ago at my local Wal-Mart, and it was even more fun that I remembered from my childhood. Count me among those who would love to see more Krofft craziness released on DVD!
OMG I loved all these shows, the Bugaloos were my favorite, and I DVR'd the entire marathon of LOTL over Memorial Day weekend, then sat back and watched my neverending supply of nostalgia, HR PufNStuf, and Sigmund were so cool when we were kids, but we really did have all the best cartoons, maybe not the most special effects but it was fun, The Wacky Races, Penelope Pitstop, Dastardly & Muttley (stop that pigeon), Laff-A-Lympics, and who can forget School House Rock, and that weird ameoba looking thing that used to tell you how to make healthy snacks, like icepops out of icecube trays & toothpicks.
Those were some good times & they were over by noon, so you could spend the rest of the day out playing.
Anybody remember Sunday mornings Wonderama????
You couldn't have grown up in LA in the '70's and not been captivated by Sid & Marty Croft.  I would race home after school, to watch Lidsville and HR Puffinstuff on channel 13.  Johnny Whittaker's dad taught woodshop at my junior high, and Johnny would pop in to see his dad from time to time.  Good times...
The new movie hasn't given me any flashbacks, I am not too into watching it but this article sure has me blasting back in time.  I loved all those shows and I can't believe I missed a LOTL marathon! Keeping my fingers crossed they do it again. Though I would really love to see a Puffinstuff and Sigmund marathon. The kids shows they have on now can not compare to these shows. It would be awesome to have them on DVD!
anyone remember the one on saturday mornings w/the bay city rollers??? i used to race to get my chores done to watch that!!!
Pufinstuf was a dragon???  Who would have thought.  Does anyone remember Kimba the white lion, Ultraman and Jonny Soko and the flying robot??  I loved those shows, with Speed Racer, Banana Splits and the Monkees.
There was nothing better then Sid and Marty Kroft when I was growing up.  Lidsville, HR PufnStuf, Bugaloos - I loved them all.  As I was reading the article, all the old theme songs were popping in to my head, just like I'd heard them yesterday.
The 70's were such a simpler time, Saturday mornings were the best even my parents would watch the shows with us!  It's so hard to pick a favorite because my brothers and I loved them all!

Hey TV Land, why don't you pick up these shows and show this generation of kids and parents what quality Saturday morning shows were all about!!!
I'm 43 years old, and when I was a kid, I was always up at 6:55am on Saturday mornings, just to make sure that I wouldn't miss "Land of the Lost".  I also loved "Sigmund & the Sea Monsters" (that was my favorite Sid & Marty Kroft show) and H.R. Pufnstuf (I had a huge crush on Jack Wild - it must've been the British accent, or the fact that he kind of reminded me of Davey Jones, who I also had a crush on.  I'd read that he had died of cancer a few years ago - tragic!).

I also caught the occasional episode of "Lidsville", but I didn't like that one as much - but that theme song stuck with me more than all the others - to this day, I still get it stuck in my head from time to time, and I haven't seen that show since the '70's.

I caught a little bit of the recent "Land of the Lost" marathon on the SciFi channel, and I was horrified - all these years, and I hadn't realized that it was so awful and cheesy!
