'NCIS,' I'm sorry I doubted you

I’m not going to lie. I watch a lot of television. But even with cable and my DVR, it’s simply impossible to watch everything. But this being summer, I decided to give four shows that I never normally watch a chance to impress me. Here’s what happened:

“Supernatural” (The CW)
It’s a bit hard to jump into this show without ever having watched it, but I have to say, I enjoyed it. The episode I watched had sort of a “Back to the Future” plot about Dean (Jensen Ackles) going back in time with help from an angel, to stop the yellow-eyed demon that would eventually kill his parents. This was a two-part episode and I really want to see part two. The show reminded me a bit of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” But the one thing that worried me about this show was that there wasn’t much humor. The boys (although Sam, played by Jared Padalecki, was hardly in the episode) seem to be on the same “I’m tortured, but I’ll just keep going” path that David Banner was on in the “Incredible Hulk” episodes of my youth. I may keep watching, but tell me why I should. Is there ever any humor in this show?

CBS
Mark Harmon and Cote de Pablo prove to be much more interesting than I thought they'd be on "NCIS."

“NCIS” (CBS)
Maybe it was my long-standing aversion to Mark Harmon, but I really wasn’t expecting to like this show. But was I ever surprised. Of the four shows, this is the one I will definitely keep watching. I loved all the characters, especially former Mossad badass Ziva (Cote de Pablo) and the gothy Abby (Pauley Perrette). Heck, I even thought Harmon was kind of gruff and interesting. I actually watched two episodes – one from 2006 and one from this past season – and even though I had never seen this show before, I was able to jump right in. My question for readers is: What is the best season of this show? My Netfix queue is calling.

“The Mentalist” (CBS)
When I first heard about this show, I was intrigued, but I never got around to watching it until this past week. And I was disappointed. Patrick (Simon Baker) is nice to look at, but so smug that I kept waiting for someone to hit him. It was puzzling, because I love “House,” but House is so flawed that there’s a certain amount of irony in his smugness – his narrow skill set is the only thing he has going for him. And he's pretty tortured. Conversely, Patrick seems to blithely glide from murder scene to murder scene like a game show host. The show is not helped by the ever-irritating Robin Tunney; oh, how I cheered when she was killed off “Prison Break.” Yet, this show is incredibly popular. Why?

“Two and a Half Men” (CBS)
When it comes to comedy, I’m definitely more of an “Office” or “30 Rock” person. “Two and a Half Men” is like a throwback to another time. In fact, watching it, I kept being reminded of “Three’s Company.” It has that same “what kind of misunderstanding will fuel this week’s episode” feel, with tons of double entendre humor thrown in to boot. There is a certain gentleness to the humor. No one is ever going to feel uncomfortable watching “Two and a Half Men.” It’s the opposite of something like “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” where I find myself giggling and cringing simultaneously. But what really struck me was that “Men” wasn’t all that funny. I only laughed twice, and I rolled my eyes more than a few times. It’s one of those sitcoms where you can easily play the “guess the next line” game. Is it the gentleness that keeps people watching?

I work night and record what I like to watch. I watch NCIS always. Ten minutes into Mentalist and I delete and sleep. Nice concept that never worked out.
Love NCIS and I actually like Tony! Love the Kate, Abbey and Ziva too. And the young Ducky quote was one of my most favorites! I am really looking forward to NCIS:Los Angeles - Legend 1 &2 were outstanding!
NCIS is my absolute favorite show! I adore it. All the characters are written so full of wit, charm and amuse the heck out of me. I think the actors are terrific and I just can't get enough of this program. I didn't watch from the beginning. It was only the last 2 years that I've been following it but I will say you can't go wrong in any season but think it really hit is "peak" after Cote de Pablo joined as Ziva. I cannot wait for the season premire!!!
In response to your query of whether to continue watching Supernatural, I give you a resounding YES; there is alot of humor (I can't compare this with Buffy, never having watched it). However, its main draw is the story of family values and loyalty, mixed in with a megadose of testosterone in the form of a badass classic automobile, classic rock and gore. Honestly, in all my decades of television viewing I have never been so invested in a series before. Please give it a go. You've stepped in at a good time as the early reruns for season 4 have just begun(the episode you watched was #3). I recommend you view the previous seasons because they will provide you a better idea of the characters' psyches and their tale of Americana tragedy that's brought them to where they are today.
BTW, on House, I find the idea of a group of doctors running in and doing their own ultrasounds and CAT scans pretty ridiculous. House and his group of scouts are always doing exams and procedures that in any other hospital I've heard of would be assigned to the technologists who have been trained to perform these tests on a daily basis. The writers of House must not be concerned with the way things are actually done in most hospitals.
I love NCIS, have watched it from the beginning. It got better once Mark Harmon took over production. Two and Half men - if you watched last seasons' episodes it was a really bad season - only good episode was the one when they had a "man session". Before that it was a great show. Thinking the kid is too old now and they need to end it.  Mentalist is not bad, but I watch it faithfully.
NCIS is great.

However, Supernatural is the show I look forward to every week.  They either have very serious, mythology related episodes (which is the one you watched), or ones that are very funny.  I especially loved the episode (first or second season I think) where Dean and Sam are playing practical jokes on one another.  And then there are the episodes with the trickster.  I recommend starting from the beginning and watch the four seasons before season 5 (supposedly the last) airs.  Let's hope they tie up loose ends, like what happened to jo and elle harvelle?   Or the meg demon.
you obviously watched the wrong episode of "supernatural", that show has so many hilarious moments. Watch the 1st season and you'll definitely see. Scenes when the brothers are together and they just go after each other with pranks and whatnot is funny. trust me.
NCIS is the best on TV. The team works well together and everyone on it has a little something special to bring to the table. I never watch Supernatural. Two and a Half Men is funny and family friendly, I suspect that's not really what YOU are looking for. The Mentalist is good but you need the back story to understand it all, also, you might remember Tim Kang from several other shows and commercials, he is great. If you want really funny stuff, watch The Big Bang Theory, also family friendly but really funny.
I discovered NCIS last Fall and my wife and I have seen every episode of the six years as of two weeks ago.  The ongoing arc of the show is what makes it most interesting.  The characters evolve.  Something which happened in Season Two will pop up in Season Five, etc.

Two shows from Season Five, Chimera and Requiem, NEVER seem to be in the rotation.  Why, I have no idea.

The Pilot, which was two episodes of JAG, also come up really rarely.  I saw all of these via Netflix.

Next season should be a doozy, with Ziva's situation in flux and the possible change of Directors.  Spend the Summer catching up.  It will be well worth your time.
Love NCIS. I recently found out that the guy who plays Mcgee is actually producer's (ballisarius) stepson. Also, in "Twisted Sister", the girl who plays Mcgee's sis is actually his stepsister (producer's daughter). In one episode  about Gibbs' past, the guy who plays youger Gibbs is actually his son. And, yes i agree with someone who said, the show is addictive.
I love NCIS all of the assorted characters - I was really surprised to see the trailers for the new NCIS spin off featuring the fall premier for NCIS Los Angeles who we were introduced to in the season finale of NCIS.  I am looking forward to the new season.
I love NCIS.  But I didn't start watching it until the second season.  I caught some early episodes when USA started running the show, and was really surprised at how the characters had evolved since the beginning.  For example, in the early episodes, Tony's comments indicated that he was not a fan of movies because he didn't catch several movie references that Kate and Gibbs made.  Now he's the resident expert and compares everything to a movie. I have loved Mark Harmon since St. Elsewhere!  And watching Michael Weatherly playing such a physical role after his time in Dark Angel was a real treat.  And what can you say about David McCallum.  He's the whole reason I watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. while growing up.
I love NCIS and any season is a great one.  I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the upcoming season.  I also love Two and a Half Men.  I tried to watch the Mentalist but I just couldn't get into it.
I think NCIS could end up being one of the all-time great dramas on network TV. I just started watching it cause I watched JAG, but through the years each of the stars has fully developed his/her character into a fully-developed and interesting human, not just a 'TV character'. There's virtually no 'soap opera' on this show, no overblown Hollywood emotionalism/romances. Thank you, thank you!! It's now better than all the CSI shows, none of which are developing great lead characters, and all CSI's are so incessantly gloomy. NCIS is a do not-miss. The Mentalist deserves another look, too. It's more complicated than one-show.
My bf and I have gotten addicted to NCIS and have over the past season bought all of the previous seasons. My suggestion would also be to start from the beginning but I'm a stickler for continuity so I know what's going on. The person who mentioned Lauren Holly is correct, the seasons with her and her obsessions over La Grenuille are irritating. My favorite episodes are Frame-Up from season 3 and Witch Hunt from season 4
I absolutely love NCIS, every show, every season! I love the interaction between all the characters.  After seeing my first show I went back and watched it from season 1. Now that I'm caught up, I go through withdrawal when the season is over. NCIS and BONES make TV worth watching.
Keep watching Supernatural. If you watch the earlier seasons, the humor is there, but this past season, 4 was a little more grim because of a lot of things that have happened leading up to season four. So i suggest going back and watching from the Beginning! Also, NCIS, watch Season 2 into Season 3, because it's just AWESOME. Skip any season with Lauren Holly.
NCIS, is the best show on TV now, it is a well write show that is both storyline & character driven- I have been a HUGE Mark Harmon fan since he was the QB at UCLA in the 70's!!!
To Therese, Sunnyvale, CA:
You are wrong about Lauren Holly.  She help explain Jethro. Ziva and Abbey are great. Ducky (and his assistant) makes me laugh.

Favorite saying: Probi-LICIOUS
NCIS is great. The characters are so well developed. Abby is just fabulous as a Goth forensic expert, but the interplay between all of the team makes for a tension filled story line.Mark Harmon is still hot and tempting! I love the role of Ziva, she's got her stuff together.
If you don't know Mark Harmon was a gifted football player (quarterback) you didn't appreciate a small moment when Gibbs picks up a football and passes it to some kids playing near by.  One of my favorite moments.
Supernatural is an awesome show!  It's a good mix of the X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and has a lot of good humor you just have to give it more of a chance and start watching it from the begining.  This is one of my favorite shows and I have gotten alot of other people to watch it and they all like it.
NCIS is also a great show.  I didn't start watching this show in the beginning because I wasn't sure if I would be able to take Mark Harmon seriously in this role but he surprised me.  I started to watch this show when the USA network started showing reruns and now I can't get enough of the show.  One of my favorite shows was called Undercover and Tony and Ziva go undercover and pose as a married assisins.  There are alot of other good ones but this is one of my favorites.
I would suggest that you keep watching Supernatural and NCIS because there isn't alot of other good shows left out there.  I also got my husband to start watching these shows with me and now he loves them both so don't give up on these two shows.
You really have to watch all the seasons to appreciate everything that happens in NCIS. They flashback and reference so much that has happened in the past. Yes you could get by with just watching the past couple to get caught up, but watching from the 1st episode will make it better....
There is no one best season for NCIS...they are all great.  Start with season one and see them all.  Love this show.
NCIS and 24 are the only shows I watch on a regular basis. NCIS is my favorite. All seasons are very good, but I think I enjoyed this latest season the most. I was glad to see Director Shepard replaced as she didn't seem a good fit for the Director's role. My favorite character is Ducky, hands down. What a great, varied and long career David McCallum has had. He's perfect as the slightly askew chief pathologist, who holds conversations with his "patients" on the autopsy table! Every situation reminds him of a wacky story from his mysterious past. Great show.
I started watching NCIS by default, a year or two ago, around the time Ziva joined the team.  I don't think I would have gotten hooked without her, although Abby is awesome.  My 13 year old daughter immediately got a crush on Michael Weatherly and I believe Mark Harmon has never had a chance to really develop a character until this show.  I've watched earlier shows in reruns; Gibbs was too rigid; DeNozo too hound dog; Kate just kind of lame; McGee just kind of blank.  This show has definitely grown and deepened with time into something wonderful.  Also, for David McCallum:  You have to see the one where they use the computer to go reverse age a guest character who happens to resemble Ducky.  Yep, Illya again; even my daughters agree he was hot!

The Mentalist, I want to like it, but really only find it marginally above 'Murder She Wrote."  You have to love blondes, Ozzies or Baker to believe his back story can make this show worth watching.  The two male cops are good and should find something better than this.

2/12 Men:  Guilty pleasure!  I knew I hated it without ever watching.  My husband started watching.  It's a male fantasy with some great writing.  It's nice to have a geek character, too, as Cryer and Sheen really play off each other.  And that kid is priceless.  When they refer to the kid, it is just like a real family -- not so charming and Cosby-like.  Mom and Berta are great, too.
I have to jump in and defend Two and a Half Men. I think it is absolutely hilarious. I know it can be a little predictable sometimes but it just funny and not always gentle in my opinion. I laugh out loud every time I watch it. My favorite episode was when Herb (Judith's second husband) goes out to a bar with Charlie and Herb says he has been watching adult videos and asks Charlie what ever happened to pubic hair. Later Herb introduces himself to a girl and says she'll have to excuse him because he is new to dating scene and still has all his original pubic hair. LMFAO.
I watch NCIS and the Mentalist, but like NCIS better.  I have not been able to bring myself to watch Two and a Half Men, but have been more than pleasantly surprised by How I Met Your Mother.  Went back and started with the first season and darnit if it isn't pretty funny (with some uniquely uncomfortable moments here and there).
I'd never watched NCIS until recently when my father-in-law was over.  He loves the show.  Ouch....it was horrible.  The characters are all cranky and really seem to hate each other.  How do they all work together.  I will not be watching again.
My husband and I both love NCIS...We end up watching all of the NCIS-athons (and House-athons) on USA without even meaning to :o)  I also love the fact that, on NCIS, the writers will take a song and write the episode around that song.  It's neat to see how they do that - which is probably why the make a point of mentioning the music used in each episode.

The Mentalist is a good show, too...I don't see Jane as being smug, but, like many others have mentioned, I watched the show from the beginning.  And, if you see the episodes where he goes back and helps the families heal in some way, you would see the heart that his character has.  I even have my hubby watching this one now...
NCIS is a great show, love all the seasons, although I too was not a great fan of Lauren Holly.  Her character did serve to create some interesting situations.  The writers are great - love all of Tony's movie references; and the cast makes it happen.  Also love the occasional appearance of Gibbs' "crusty" mentor.  Keep up the great work and let's have Pam Dawber guest star; maybe as a singer with the "The President's Own" Marine Band or the US Navy Band.
Love Love Love NCIS.  I don't know about best season, but my favorite episode of all time is "Dead Man Walking".
Began watching NCIS at the end of season #3 when my husband asked me to watch the season ender for him (he is not a DVR person); I was hooked and have been catching other seasons, as others have mentioned, plus all episodes going forward. Agree that The Mentalist is predictable, yet somewhat quirky and I do enjoy the characters.  Two and a Half Men:  the men not so funny/interesting, yet any episode in which their Mother and the Housekeeper appear, especially together, is great, especially if you're into sarcastic humor.
You're awesome! You pick one of the most myth-based SPN episodes and ask for humor! LOL BTW there is a lot of funny stuff in Supernatural!!! You just picked the wrong episode, Kripke and his team like to have a good mix of funny and serious episodes.
My favorite funny episodes:
Season 1: Hell House
Season 2: Tall Tales, Hollywood Babylon (watch!!! You don't need to know anything about Supernatural to find this episodes funny!!!!)
Season 3: Bad Day at Black Rock, Ghostfacers, Mystery Spot
Season 4: Monster Movie, Yellow Fever, Wishful thinking, It's a terrible life, The monster at the end of the book
Walter McClure:  The reason NCIS gets involved in a case is usually because it is a Navy sailor or Marine who is killed.  Or sometimes a civilian is killed on military base.  They always explain jurisdiction, as there is usually some sort of disagreement with the "local LEOs."  Bottom line, there is ALWAYS a Navy/Marine connection, which automatically makes it their jurisdiction.

Ditto on Supernatural, I always LOL at least once while watching.  "Bad Day at Black ROck" was hilarious (it's fresh in my memory because I just watched it last week).  But the one Paige watched was probably the worst one she could've seen from a "newcomer looking for fun & humor" perspective.  It was a pretty heavy episode.

Love, love LOVE The Mentalist!  Even with his quirks (or because of them), Patrick Jane is so charmingly disarming.  I liked the one about the Vegas casino owner who was killed, and the guy who was under witness protection... there's a great scene of Jane on the golf course with a mob boss.
I watch NCIS every week--and the episodes in previous years on another station.  You need to be kinder to Mark Harmon.  Every week in the ratings in Dallas, NCIS is in the top ratings of daily shows--usually number 3 or 6.

The mentalist is enjoyable. One can see twists and turns.  How he determines who is the murderer is interesting.

Two and a Half Men is funny and great to watch.  We are no longer watching it, because of reference to his sexual origins and women sleeping over.  That typically would not bother me except that this show is on about 8:30 pm and some kids are watching the show.  The children, preteens, and some young teens get the idea that having early sexual experiences is okay because it is on TV or iis n the movies. We hear about the continuing rise of teen pregnacy-parents need to watch what their children watch and or go to movies.

Supernatural: Everything involving Ben Edlund (Tick) is a fun and wacky episode!
Supernatural is full of humor - except for a few episodes of this season. It's rumored to only be written for 5 years and where things seem to be heading help fuel that rumor. This season, look for Yellow Fever - one of the funniest ever. Season 3 Bad Day at Black Rock made me laugh until I cried. Give it a few more tries. Monster Movie and Yellow Fever are coming up in reruns soon.
Can't agree more on the apology to NCIS. I always gave/give my husband a hard time about all his "cops and robbers" shows, such as CSI, Law & Order, L&O SVU, but NCIS is head and shoulders above them all.  I get so bored with the same old rigamarole the actors trot out in CSI and the L&O shows (maybe the script requires it) -- they never get much depth.  Plus I really, really, really, really hate the L&O "CONK CONK" scene-switching sound effect (the one that is supposed to resemble a gavel).

Every season of NCIS has built upon the last when it comes to character development and context.  I LOVE the Abby character and she and McGee together have a cute dynamic.  I also like that Gibbs' character doesn't reveal every bit of himself, ever.

P.S. I hate nearly all the drivel that comes out of the idiot box, as my father used to call it, but this is worth your time.
Love Love Love NCIS.  I think the new spinoff NCIS LA will be good too.  Two and a Half Men is the same joke every week. I am so over that show.  I also like the Mentalist, although Tunney is so unbelieveable in that show.  She has the emotion of a blade of grass.
I have watched Supernatural from day one and think it has gone down hill a bit too much.  CBS is the only network that still has a few good shows to watch.
I routinely LOL at 2.5 Men.  In fact, it's one of the only shows that has ever made me laugh until I cry.  But the difference is probably that I'm male.  The show is definitely targeted towards a male audience.  My wife finds it mildly amusing, but disposable.  I find it side-splitting hilarious.
I watch NCIS, Mentalist and 2.5 Men. All good. I only enjoyed NCIS since Ziva joined, but now in catching up on all the reruns of the past, past seasons have grown on me and it's been enjoyable. I still prefer the current cast, but it is all good, even the 2nd or 3rd time around.
Interesting that NCIS and Mentalist are so often mentioned in the same breath here. In each program, the lead character (Gibbs and Patrick) is driven by the loss of a wife and daughter
Last night I just rewatched the NCIS show about Charles Durning playing a Congressional Medal-awarded corporal from WWII trying to turn himself in for killing his best friend at Okinawa. It's the best NCIS show they've ever done.

I miss Kate. I sit in awe that David McCallum is still vibrant 40 years after he created Ilya Kuryakin on "Man From Uncle".

I've always liked Mark Harmon. Pauley Perrette is charismatic, Cote de Pablo had a fascinating season finale.

I only wish Michael Weatherly could someday be as sincerely dramatic as he was in "Dark Angel". But there's still that terrific episode where he contracted bubonic plague, struggling through it with the best "movie lines" the show's ever written for him.

Sean Murray plays one of the best computer nerds
ever, enough to make you forget he's the producer's stepson. Other than that, it's notable that their RERUNS still get 13 million viewers a week. My husband insisted we watch this show, now I'm watching right along with him.
NCIS is awesome - Ziva kicks ass and Abby is fabulous.  All the characters are great, really - keep watching!  And I would agree with some of the other commenters - just start from season 1 - all of it is excllent and it just gets better.
I am not generally a dedicated TV watcher; I just used to watch specific programmes, e.g. Masterpiece Theatre, Mystery, Nature, etc.  However I recently discovered NCIS reruns on USA and have been thoroughly enjoying the episodes. I took to the series because unlike most crime series NCIS focus on forensics, IT, and good old fashion policing to solve cases. I like all the characters especially Ducky, Abby and McGee (who I think is underrated); but sometimes think Tony is irritating.  I am particular interested to see how the new Director character, Vince develop in the new season.
I love NCIS, but I guess I am one of the few that really enjoyed Lauren Holley and I miss her.  Do not like the new director at all.
I watch NCIS from time to time.  The Tony character would have been fired years ago for his sexual remarks. I do like Abby though.  Mentalist I can watch or not.  Never have seen Supernatural.  I never miss Two And A Half Men and laugh out loud every time I watch it.
To see Ducky (David McClellum) as a young man, watch the Great Escape.  Cant remember his character, but its the aide-type guy to Richard Attenborough's character.
