Commercial contest: Liberty Mutual's raw ads

Filed Under:

It's that time again: As summer kicks in, I'm starting up my annual TV commercial contest.

There aren't really many, if any, rules. We hash out the good, the bad and the ugly of recent commercials in posts and comments here, and when we're done, I choose the best and the worst TV commercial of recent months. (Your comments greatly inform the decision, but the final choice ends up being mine alone ... there's just no other way to do it.)

We try to stick to ads that debuted in the last six months, though that's not a hard-and-fast rule. Ads that have won in the past can't win again, and we try not to repeat discussion of them.

Inevitably, people will leave comments about how ignorant we are for chatting about commercials when they don't own a TV and instead sit around reading Dostoyevsky in the original Russian. The words "get a life" will be used. People will introduce this newfangled concept of "TiVo" and suggest we fast-forward every single ad. Others will attack any criticism of a bad ad, saying that the sheer fact that the commercial is remembered means that it did its job. Yes, yes. Heard it all before. I'm sure I'll approve some of those comments anyway -- I do every year -- but I'm hoping they'll be kept to a minimum. I still get a huge kick out of this contest or I wouldn't be continuing the tradition.

After all, just when you think nothing on TV can surprise you, you stumble upon an ad like the one that overwhelmingly won our best-commercial honor last year, the Discovery Channel's lovely "Boom-di-ada" promo, set to an old summer-camp song. ("I love tornadoes, I love ara-ch-nids, I love hot magma, I love the giant squids!") It's a near-perfect ad, and in a world where we can usually find three times as many bad ads as good ones to discuss, it was a much-needed gem.

I cheated last year when it came to the worst-commercial honor, giving it not to one ad, but to a spokesman. BILLY MAYS FOR OXI CLEAN! BILLY MAYS FOR ORANGE GLO! BILLY MAYS FOR SCREAMERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE! Mr. Mays takes that nice happy buzz I had from watching the Discovery Channel ad and STOMPS ON IT AND THEN THROWS IT RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW! But anyway, he can't win again. Or lose again. Whatever.

Here are the other past winners/losers.

2007
Best: PetSmart bulldog gives away his toy
Worst: Sour Skittles milks a man (David Groh of "Rhoda" fame, who's since died)

2006
Best: Talking cows for Real California Cheese
Worst: HeadOn! Apply directly to your...well, you get the idea.

2005
Best: How did HP work their "Frames" magic?
Worst: Tampax rocks the boat

2004
Best: Citibank voice-switching identity-theft ads
Worst: AAAAUGH! Digger the Dermatophyte, the Lamisil toenail monster

And I'll just throw out one topic to get you started: What is up with those new Liberty Mutual ads? I've admitted to loving the ones where people spot another person doing a good deed and then pay it forward by doing one themselves. But now, with tough economic times battering us all, LM has a new series that replaces those ads. Apparently they're all set within the life of the same family, the Marlowes, and they cover the hard times, such as deciding if grandpa can live alone anymore, or whether their son can stay in college if dad loses his job.

The notable thing about these ads is that they're really not in context. You see a snippet of a scene that feels more like a TV drama than an ad. Most memorable for me: Siblings sharing that dad wandered off again and one asks what the other plans to do about it. "What do I plan to do? You're PART OF THIS FAMILY!" screams the woman. (Note: I swear I saw this one, but now there's a tamer one where she says something different.) And here's the kicker: The New York Times says the ads are directed by Harmony Korine of "Kids" and "Gummo" fame, which actually ... makes sense.

I guess I should appreciate the ads for being honest and not denying bad times. But not only do they confuse me about what they're selling, I kind of feel like a kid whose mom and dad are fighting and want to go hide under the bed. They feel raw and personal, which is obviously intended. But do they sell the company's products? And even if they do, do they go too far?

Discuss the Marlowes or any other ad that's bugging or thrilling you these days in the comments.

I do like the new Liberty Mutual ads, but sometimes, when times are harder, you want something lighter, too.

The new Toyota Prius commercial (with all of the people dressed in different colors making up the background) are pretty cool...My mom even called me the other night and said those commercials were cool enough to make her want a Toyota - just because of the commercial...And this is a woman who won't drive anything but an American car brand...

I know he can't win again, but the Billy Mays commercials are just too much...My husband refuses to buy anything with his name on it because he hates the commercials so much...
I have to admit that I'm one of those people who tries very hard to turn down the t.v. and ignore commercials as much as possible. There are times I am unable to do it quick enough and end up having to watch some.  The two that have annoyed me the most this year are both insurance commercials:  Nationwide On Your Side (omg, really?  you think so?).  First off your commercial has just convince me to never, ever buy Nationwide and second, trying to convince me that you are on my side has as much chance as snow melting in -0c weather!  The other is the Progressive Girl.  The commercial itself doesn't really drive me nuts...but that woman does.  Bad enough that she dresses like a reject from the 50/60's era but the way she talks?  Enough to bury my head!!
I can't stand the Liberty Mutual ad where the mom and son are in the hallway at a hospital after what was apparently an accident he caused and she's badgering him about what happened.  The voice-over about "when people do the right thing..." drives me insane, since no one in this ad appears to be doing "the right thing."  Good call on this one Gael: I can't think of another commercial I hated more.
One of the funniest that isn't playing anymore since Lent ended was the McDonald's Filet-o-Fish ad where the fish on the wall is singing.  Cracked me up every time I saw it. I also like the Progressive ads with Flo.  They're clever and cute.
Now, as for annoying,  BILLY MAYS goes without saying. But also, I am mildly annoyed by the Honda Insight commercial's song.  Don't know what it is, just don't like it much.
I love the commercial with the little girl holding the box of frozen fish yelling at her mother, "Minced, you feed me minced"  "Did you ever catch a minced fish?"  Cracks me up everytime I see it.  I'm not sure though whether it advertised Mrs. Paul's or Gortons.
I nominate the Alltel ads with "Chad" and the inept posse of other cell phone carriers. The most recent one is particularly bad with the posse being buried in sand up to their necks and they call Chad because he's "..the only one who will answer..." Chad starts talking about Alltel's service and the posse sends him away with a "...good day!" The posse is left on the beach at night with crabs approaching and they scream like little girls. All the Altell "Chad" commercials are bad. DO people actually switch because of these?
OK, I admit that I have a preternatural fondness for puppets ... but ... I like the Nike ads with the LeBron and Kobe puppets. No, they don't have anything to do with shoes. Yes, they are very silly. But I still like 'em. Maybe because I'm a Cavs fan?
I love the one with the skateboarding bulldog in the house...you can hear the rumble of the board on the hardwood floors, the man yells "No skateboarding in the house," the dog comes into view, skillfully flips the skateboard around, and skates off camera.
The Liberty Mutual ads make no sense at all.If you didn't know better, you'd think they were for some kind of family counseling service. And what products are they selling? What does an insurance company have to do with snooping on your daughter's computer? What does it have to do with your son getting caught drag racing? Anybody? Anybody?
The one I think I dislike the most is the one where the woman insists that her mom has alzheimers and "noone" seems to listen and is in denial. I understand the premis, but I don't like how it was done.

The two I am totally liking right now is the Dairy Queen one where the kids had Tivo'd DQ commercials one for a Blizzard and the other a cheeseburger and they play when mom or dadare in the room and the on ekid says "this is the best idea you have ever had". The other is the MAC PC commercial about the helpline. CRacks me up.
I completely agree with your take on the LM ads. It was not until I saw the clip above (which I have seen on TV multiple times) that I tied it to Liberty Mutual. I kept thinking it was for the Partnership for a Drug-Free America...shows how much that caught my attention.

Bring on the contest!
I love the State Farm ad where the Vendor sells hot dogs only - no buns(re: you get what you pay for)
I have to send in a vote for the Progressive Insurance ads.  Flo is funny and entertaining and I like how the ads work.  I especially liked the christmas one,"I like cahsmere socks..."  The ads that baffle me are any of the Geico ones with the gecko.  I'm wondering why the british accent and why he is now the spokesperson for Geico.  Wish the cavemen would come back at least they were clever and understandable.
I've been waiting for this contest so that I could share my new favorite commercial:  The Heineken Walk-in Fridge commercial.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1ZZreXEqSY

It makes me laugh out loud everytime I see it.  I love the expressions on the guys face as they check out the fridge.
Okay, I've got to start off with the Geico commercials.  Rather, the money saved when switching to Geico.  The cavemen were funny, the pile of money with eyeballs on it, not funny.  With the cover of Rockwell's Somebody's Watching Me song.  Let's just say, it's crap.
I, for one, am intrigued by a commercial campaign that's more thoughtful and real than a lot of TV drama.

Liberty already hooked me with the "Pay it forward" style ads (which still strike me as among the single-most effective brand builders I've ever seen), so they have some credibility with me going into this.  I'm interested to see how it develops.
Okay, I have to give some thought to my favorite commercial, however, my least favorite is the Burger King burger shot commercial with the 2 idiots sitting on the bench and the one guy opens his napkin and you see the little mini burgers, than all these dimwitted girls come over and start swooning over them like the burgers were a baby or a puppy.  This commercial was originally a radio commercial and I thought it was the stupidest thing than, the fact that they made it live is just pathetic...
I love the Denny's Commercial that shows the Human Substitute Robot!  So funny and provokes thought. The whole 'Terminator & Machines take over' idea is scary and real.
My favorite commercial, although it has been longer than 6 months, is the Heineken closet commercial.  The girls are screaming for shoes and the boys are screaming for beer.  Pretty cute.

The worst commercials, gotta go to Vince with ShamWow and the Slapchop.  No doubt!
WORST AD: AXE with the "chocolate" man strolling down the street, on the bus, etc.... when that woman bites his butt of ... sends a shiver up my spine. WHAT BAD TASTE!! And to see it running in the daytime when kids can see it? WORSE than the Burger King "square butts" comercial. As least that one was only suggestive
I love the new OLD NAVY commercial where the girl looses her top and her boyfriend trys to cover his friends eyes but his fingers are split apart....
Arby's has a commercial I really enjoy. It opens with two chubby, middle-aged guys, one in a black outfit (maybe Spanish?) and the other dressed in all white as a baker, running across a field towards each other. They hug and I always laugh when flour dust clouds emerge from the baker's back during the hug. The men are laughing as they hold both hands and turn around in a circle, just like little kids. Then they ride a tanden bike, fly a kite, and finally, skip off hand in hand. There's something that's just so joyous about this ad.
Let me start with the GEICO pile of money with eyes.  Not only creepy, but stupid and annoying.
So you've ruled out Billy Mays for the WORST designation, but is he eligible for the BEST? Because I looooooooooove his ad for the ESPN website ("The secret is the internet connection!!").

As for worst, I've come to loathe the "Butt Dialing" ads in which a moderately attractive, youngish upper-middle-class couple can think of nothing better to do with their relatively privileged lives than snark smarmily at each other about their cellphones [teeth grinding]. This ad was included as part of the pre-feature package at the last movie I saw, and I nearly ran screaming from the theater!
Funny you mention this ad, because it so struck me the first time (and subsequent) I saw it. I've actually mentioned it to others to ask their perspective on it. After the pulling back from the bus commercials, which were good but got a little tiring, this was so good and refreshing. Regardless of whether or not you mentioned it, this would have definitely gotten my vote.
Could any ad be skeevier than the Comfort Wipe commercial? I have no idea how new it is, nor could I testify for certain that it isn't a spoof, because...dang. I just saw this in a Slate blog and I'm horrified.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crfGXmxJ1vM
I think the Terminex commercial with the giant bug (whatever it is)delivering pizza is very funny.  When he says "perhaps I should place it on your table" cracks me up everytime. When he's driving away in his car brings a chuckle too.
I still laugh like crazy at the E-trade baby commercials. When the baby calls his golf partner a "shankasaurous" is funny as heck. And all the babies laughing at the one baby, hysterical
The Liberty Mutual ads include some tag line about doing the right thing.  "The Marlowes will do the right thing, and so will we," seems to be the message. Sure, you can see the value in getting that message out when people generally think of insurance companies as heartless and detached.

Aren't these commercials the equivalent of "glurge" emails.  They might as well begin with, "I'm crying as I type this..."
My hands-down vote for favorite commercial is the Toyota Prius ads with all the people dressed up like grass, flowers, water, clouds, the sun.  Ya'll know the one, the Prius drives by and the "snow" turns to green, which is really people standing up and throwing off white covers (snow) to reveal the green!!!  Very cool!!!

I also love the cell phone commercials made like horror movies (it's a dead zone!!!), but don't know if they count as new ads.
The commercial that cracks me up each time is the cell phone commercial..."So should I tell so-and-so's grandmother that you are not interested?" and the Dad says.."What does she look like"? Cracks me up each time...Haven't seen it lately.
The worst ad ever is the Jack in the Box commercial about the new smoothies and the woman going through menopause.  It is wrong on so many levels.
My favorite commercial in recent days (I'll stop my TiVo for this one) is only shown here in the northwest, for Sterling Savings Bank. It shows a guy outside on his deck talking on the phone to the new bank that now holds his account - he tells them he's in Washington, y'know - Seattle, Pacific Northwest, Oregon, Idaho....
I think I like it so much because I relate so well to it, having moved from the midwest to Washington in my early 20's and having to explain that no, I wasn't moving to the town of Washington, Iowa - or Washington, D.C.  Then I'd have to explain that I was moving to Washington state, on the west coast. I still remember the confused looks I received in response to that!
I forgot to mention my nominations for worse commercial.  After reading the other comments, I agree with the liberty mutual ads being among the worse.  I don't see what this has to do with insurance.  I thought it was for a religion.

I also love the Old Navy mannequins.  The newest has a new guy brought in for a special promotion doing one arm push-ups; his arm is off.  I also thought the Burger King square butts commercial is hilarious, but typically think the BK king is creepy.
I hate the State Farm commercials (you get what yuo pay for), which show people getting their car washed but not rinsed, buying a hot dog but getting no bun, and buying from an ice cream truck and not getting a stick on the ice cream.  HATE those!  (I didn't know what the commercial was for until I read one of these responses...  I never stick around to watch the whole thing.)

One I like:  may be regional, but the Food Lion grocery store has one with a bunch of shopping carts full of groceries ($79.00 or $98.54, etc.), and a family is 'big game hunting.'  The mother finds one she likes which fits the budget so they have to 'hunt' the cart and separate it from the herd.  It's really quite cute and clever.  Food Lion is in the Southeast & mid-Atlantic states http://www.foodlion.com/pricehunters/
I love the Heineken ad where the woman is showing her girlfriends her amazing new walk-in closet They all start screaming and jumping up and down, only to stop when they hear the men screaming because the man has brought his friends into his walk-in beer fridge.  The guy at the end waving his hands excitedly cracks me up every time.
The best commercial of 09 so far is the "Cash for Gold" spot with Ed McMahon and MC Hammer that was in the Super Bowl.  Sign of the times people.  Sign of the Times!
My least favorite is a tie between any Enzyte commercial and any "sell your gold" commercial - but this could just be because I watch too much VH1 and these get heavy rotation there (apparently, VH1 users need bigger things and have lots of gold?).  I was also put off by the new woman's personal shaver where women walk into the shot, and the nearest bush adjusts its shape to what must be her bush shape.  I think it's tacky, but that's just me.
How could I have forgotten the GEICO money pile ads? I hate those! Further, I can't figure GEICO out: What a bizarre melange of the brilliant, the awful, and (strangely) campaigns that oscillate between awful AND brilliant? And what other brand would have so many overlapping campaigns that are so different in style? I'm no expert, but I doubt that's what they teach in Marketing 101.

As for Progressive Flo, I go back and forth about those ads: Sometimes I find them cute and even a little bit sexy; other times, Flo bugs the heck out of me. It seems to depend on my own mood at the time the ad comes on. Not sure what that says about the overall goodness of the campaign....
Bring back the Geico cavemen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They rule!

Get rid of the money with eyes/Gecko lizard commercials!
I'll have to get back to you on the best, but a shoe-in for the worst commercial ever is the series from Quizzno's with the homo-erotic oven jonesing for the torpedo roll. I stopped eating there the first time I head that oven say, "Just put it in me, Steve."
The absoulte best is the ad for the Kia Soul with the hamsters. I actually rewind the DVR when I see that one on.

The worst is certainly the GEICO money eyes. Especially the one where the lady is flirting with it-YUK!
I also have to vote against the slapchop guy, he is as bad if not worse than Billy Mays
Every time the commercial for the new Kia Soul comes on, I have to laugh! It's a bunch of giant rodents riding around in a car that looks like a box...  What exactly are you suppose to take away from this?  Kia Soul...  Good enough for rats.   :)
Love the Progressive girl ads...

Hate the current Geico ads with the eyes on money...
My fav Geico ads were the ones where you didn't know they were Geico ads until they said, "...but I just saved a lot of money by switching to Geico."

Love the "Real Men of Genius" radio ads from Budweiser.
LOVE the Nike puppet ads... awesome!  Creative and family friendly.  While I'm sure Nike was hoping to capitalize on the Finals between LeBron and Kobe, alas that was not meant to be... but still translated into the best commercials I've seen in a long time.  These are what the Superbowl commercials have been lacking for several years!

HATE the stupid King in the Burger King commercials.  Completely annoying, and somehow creepy.  Off with his head!!
LOVING these commercials:
SNY sports channel ads
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEC4eKkjVHM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGZGXHmJr70
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXH9gvFTo40

Denny's Fight the Machines breakfast - Nobody Likes You, Jeffrey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMuhUj6XHPU

Heineken Walk-in Fridge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1ZZreXEqSY

and the new DQ ones a previous poster mentioned with the kids TIVOing the commercials to manipulate Mom & Dad!! (couldn't find a clip)
I love the Castrol Syntec commercials with the guy running arond smacking people.  "Now you're thinking with your dipstick, Jimmy!"  ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!!!!!
Love the Heineken walk in frige commercial.  The Toyota Prius commercials where people are the trees, grass, water, etc. is also a great one.
This is what DVRs are for!  :-)  I will NEVER buy ANYTHING that Billy Mays pitches for because I do not enjoy being screamed at, regardless how good the product is!!!  Does this man need hearing aids?  Someone help him!  What is up with that?!?
