By George, the old O'Malley will be missed

I'll miss Dr. George O'Malley on "Grey's Anatomy." And yet, I won't miss Dr. George O'Malley on "Grey's Anatomy."

ABC
By George, the old O'Malley will be missed.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello revealed Wednesday that actor T.R. Knight won't be returning to the ABC medical drama. I suspect my divided feelings about this are shared by many "Grey's" fans, for a very simple reason. The George O'Malley who ended up disfigured and possibly dying on the show's season finale hadn't been the original George O'Malley for quite some time.

Remember back when the show started? George was kind of a puppy-dog character. He was the guy friend that all the show's beautiful women turned to instinctively, yet when he became romantically involved with them, it was always a disaster. Who doesn't know someone like that?

Part of George's charm was that he made mistakes. In romance, in friendship, and also, professionally. He was dubbed "007" for his "license to kill" when he choked while performing surgery. Later in the third season, he failed his intern exams and had to go through the mortification of repeating the internship while his friends all moved on.

One of my favorite George plots involved his family. The O'Malleys weren't used that much on the show, but they lit up the screen whenever they appeared. Unlike Meredith's wrenching family life, with an Alzheimer's-stricken mother who never seemed to care for her and a father who started a new family without her, George came from a close-knit group. His brothers, Jerry and Ronny, teased him like crazy, but it was revealed that they respected him as the family hope, the one smart boy who was making good. His dad, played by the delightful George Dzundza, was always entertaining, and his death felt more wrenching than most losses on "Grey's."

Despite a strong start, George's plotlines wavered and stumbled. First he slept with Meredith, his big crush -- what was that about? Then he ran off with Callie Torres, a plot that seemed to exist mostly so she could refer to herself as "Callie O'Malley." But the Callie relationship was a hundred times better than the real disaster, the George-Izzie love affair, dubbed "Gizzie" by viewers. While I could buy that George and Callie found comfort in each other, George and Izzie never rang true as a couple to me, and from then on, Knight's character was just kind of lost. Even his dramatic (presumed) death scene felt cribbed from that "ER" episode where Dennis Gant's beeper goes off and the other doctors realize the mangled body on their table is their co-worker and friend.

Show creator Shonda Rhimes told Ausiello that she intentionally cut back on George's plotlines in this last season to make her final-episode twist work. Her theory is supposedly that fans were used to not seeing George, so when he didn't show up much in the episode, no one would make the leap that he was the disfigured John Doe who saved a woman from death by bus.

Yeah, I'm not buying it. If George's character had been as integral a part of the show as, say, Sandra Oh's Cristina, there's no way his role would have been cut back for a shocking twist. It's sad that a character with so much promise ended up fizzling out. I'd say I'll miss him, but I've already been missing him for several seasons now.

Should "Grey's Anatomy" have killed off George? And what should happen to his fellow dying doctor, Izzie? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Get rid of Izzie!!  Get rid of Izzie!!  Get rid of Izzie!!
I like the actor, and think he would have been a strong part of the show if they hadn't screwed him over. Their loss. I'm sure that he will have a good career after this show, starting with his theater gig. I look forward to seeing him in future TV shows.
This show is what should be killed off.  Actually, it's been dead for a long time now, and the corpse has begun to stink something awful.
Recast George...disfigured face means they could get away with it and could re-energize his character and get rid of Izzie.  Katherine Heigl is a diva and could care less about being on the show.  So good riddance!
The Gizzie affair was ridiculous but I really liked his character and it is a shame that both actors (TR Knight and Heigle) would take away from such a great show because they suddenly think they are above Television.
I will miss the old George of Grey's Past. I loved the way the season ended this year, and it would have been great had they kept him and the lady he saved be his love. George was a great character if they would have left him as George not make him into this..I don't know what.. NOT George.

Anyway yes I will miss him and wish they would have kept him.
RIP George "007" O'Malley
Okay once again Ms Rimes has tried to play with our intelligence I for one knew it was George from the minute he showed up at the hospital.  I think she has let a good character go bad by the writing of the storylines who ever believe that George and Izzie drunken one night stand was a great love affair but I do believe that his character needs to be recast.  But I thought that they should have recast Dr. Burke.  Ms Rimes has let this show go terribly wrong and she seems to let her anger be played on the show.  She gets mad with an actor and the next thing you know the either disappear (Dr Burke) or she kills them off (George and Izzie).  The sad thing is the writing is on the wall it won't last as long as ER did because she just doesn't consider the storyline.  But I can always watch reruns on Lifetime.
TR has been on Rhimes radar ever since the blowup with Washington.Insult to injury.
as soon as they brought in the John Doe, I knew it was George. I think a lot of people did. she didn't use him during the season cause she had no storyline for him. Not cause she was saving for a season finale.
I have also missed the old George but the new George hasn't been the best.  If they had kept the old George I would be crying to see him go but now I am ok with it.  I was shocked when it was him that saved the woman from the bus but figured that this is a way to let him go and move on.  The doctors will now have to deal with the loss of George and possibly the loss of Izzie.  Call me crazy but I am not ready for her to die.  I like seeing Izzie and Alex together.  I don't want to see that storyline end just yet.
Some plot twist--I knew it was George on the table from the first minute.  I won't miss Knight, and I only wish he was taking Heigl with him.
In defense of Ms. Rhimes, my fiance and I were angry during the finale because they had again written George out of the episode.  Kudos if that was intentional.
Well, this year's season finale certainly had me sitting on the couch, screaming "WHAT THE F*&#?!"  at the tv but at the same time, I would have rather gotten rid of Izzie than George.  Izzie's storyline was getting whiney and soap-opera-y what with the pretend relationship with her dead fiance and then getting cancer.  Bring back George and phase out Izzie because I agree that he was probably the most human character on the show because he made mistakes but was still so indearing that you couldn't help but love him.
Since George is now disfigured - maybe "George" will live being played by another actor...... Its TV afterall.  They switched Darren's.
We had enough of izzie let her be dead... Bring back Burke so he can fight it out with Christine's new beau... Its rotten when the stars start to say I want off it's not fair to us.  A contract is a contract...
Talk to Corizine who is trying to break my contract CWA workers fight on
No they shouldn't kill him off. He USED to be fun to watch. There was a theory that they would bring in another actor to be "George" claiming plastic surgery changed his looks to fix his disfigurement. Interesting but highly doubtful. No what about "Izzie"? Dead or Alive?
Sadly, this is what happens to ensemble shows.  They explode on the scene with 'freshness' and 'newness' and other 'nesses', then dissolve into inane plotlines and cast bickering over camera time and ego-stuff.  Too bad.  It is hard to carry the storylines past a season or two without them becoming pretty stupid.  Sometimes mixing up the cast helps (fresh freshness), but most of the time, after 3 or 4 seasons, it's good to see them go.  Perhaps the expectation of change is what keeps Law and Order going... you know most of these guys are vulnerable, and they limit the personal stuff.  I'm hoping that some of the Cable shows don't head the same way (Saving Grace, Raising the Bar...very good, and the Closer, to name a few).  Grey's needs to shape up fast, or just head off into the sunset to make room for another new fresh.
I would rather have George survive and move to a different hospital than be killed off.  He would be able to come back for a vist if needed.
I will miss TR Knight the actor. He brought a human quality to that role that I think will be tough to replicate. However..they destroyed his character toward the end and I felt badly about that. What about Ausiello's column the other day where he said Dominick Monaghan from Lost is going to another ABC show. What if the George character gets plastic surgery and when he wakes up....he's Monaghan!?! Maybe George won't be "dead" after all...
I am sad that George will not be back . I was/am really tired of Izzie, although I am glad to see that she did finally find love with Alex, who she abused over and over.
I too have missed the 'real' George--he was my absolute favorite...until the writers messed with who he really was. I wish they would've killed off Izzie instead and built George back up.
Yes, George (T.R.Knight) is a fine actor and will be missed.  He has the ability to make us (72 yr. old) females want to take him under our wings.  I wish him all the best and hope to see him in something worthy of his talents on prime time again, soon!
Like you, I have been missing George for some time now.  While I enjoy all of the characters on Grey's, George was the only truly "real" person on the show.  I wish the writers had given him a break and involved him more in the story lines... I would have loved to see him go off to war... I thought that fit George very well.
As for Izzie, I'd hate to see her leave, but I can't imagine what writers would come up with for her after the drama of the past year or more.  Luckily, while the show is an ensemble, it doesn't rely entirely on each person like "Friends" did, so the show will work withougt Izzie and George, but I would love to still have both of them.
i am goin to miss gerorge! i loved him in the first couple of seasons. i even thought when he got with callie it was a great plot. but when he slept with izze from being drunk i thought "what in the world were they thinking" i knew that was never goin to work. they were too much of friends. i am very sad to see him go. and they could have just left it with him goin into the military. why did they have to kill him in such a dramatic way :(
NO, I WILL MISS GEORGE, HIS CHARACTER AND DR BAILEY'S WERE THE BEST.  HE HAS ALOT TO GIVE IF JUST WRITTEN RIGHT.
"GEORGE" was the lovable, sweet, soft-spoken guy who rarely got the girl in a lasting relationship.  I loved him as played by the wonderful TR Knight.  As an actor in this role, he was cast perfectly, as he had the little boy look, the slightly sad eyes, and the sweet personality.  I'm going to miss "GEORGE" alot.  I think most likely "GEORGE" will tell "IZZIE" that it's not her time to go, and she has to go on with her life and she will be a cancer survivor.  Katherine Heigel is a lovely lady, and I'd like to see her role on Grey's continue even as she moves ahead with her movie career.  I thought the finale of Grey's this season was absolutely shocking and totally unexpected and the expressions on the faces of the actors as they realized it was "GEORGE" on the table were gut-wrenching.  Kudos to all the actors for those pieces of work!  Rest in peace, "GEORGE O'MALLEY."
i've been missing him 2 but had hoped they would improve his part next season but guess thats the breaks...hope he doesnt come back as ghost for izzie
Okay..Well i really don't want george to die..but I think it means something that Izzie is on the elevator and he is in the doorway..remember when Meredith almost died, but didn't and then she ran down the hallway and didn't die..that is why I was thinking George wasn't going to die, but Izzie was.  The elevator means up or down right.

All I know is that I cannot wait to see the next season..It's driving me nuts
I think Sandra Oh's Cristina summed it up best when she told George's father that he was the best of the interns, the heart of the group.
He was my favorite.  I hate that he got killed off.  George of the last two seasons did not match up to George of the first few.  I wish he could have just gone to Iraq and written the occasional letter, maybe shown up at the series finale.
I was an ER fan from day one and my husband a fan of Grey's.  After a little nudging from him, I, too, started watching Grey's and came to love it.  These two shows are probably the only two that I watched regularly.  As the show has evolved, I feel that the character of George was shortchanged.  I would liked to have seen his character live and Izzie's character die.  With George's death and the death of ER, my Thursday nights will never be the same.
Let's face it ... the show was doomed once they chose George over Burke, and tried to make Izzie the star (she simply doesn't have the chops)!
The show was great the first two seasons.  Started getting a little stale in the third.  It's been awful ever since Burke left.  Time to end the show.
I didn't really care for George, I liked Izzie at first because I had watched in Love Comes Softly and absolutely thought she was fantastic, but when they started with the dead fiance thing - it was overkill. Please make Dr. McArmy more tough like he was in the first episode when he stapled his own leg, and let him wear his camo once in awhile - love love love him!
Boot George and Izzie! Both of them get on my nerves. they are both so "high and mighty" ....like the are better than everyone else. Who does T R think he is? no one cares if he leaves and no one will want to watch him in movies..the ONLY reason I will see Heigle in movies is because they put her with cute guys I would want to see anyway...I wouldnt see them just because of her...I wont miss either one of them...
George the character died the moment TR Knight came out as gay.  I have no idea why, but that was when they stopped giving George anything to do.  It was completely the writers' fault.
Like we we didn't know from the season finale that Izzie and George are dead.  I liked the George character the most, but they just let him fall by the wayside.  I liked Izzie's character the least, and the whole dead fiance reappearing was the worst thing I've seen on a tv show ever. This show needs a major overhaul or it's going to end up in an elevator dead also.
and somewhere, Isiah Washington is laughing his ass off!!
I never really cared for George. I won't miss him.
I loved the season finale, whether I thought it was George or not!
I like the old George and Izzy, but then things changed.
Unfortunately some of the bad publicity that Heigle has received over the last 1+ year has made me not like her as much.
The show will go on without him and hopefully without Izzy! I'd rather see her go than him.
I was on vacation for 2 weeks and missed the last 2 shows. When I returned from vacation I watched both shows back to back. I was taken very much by surprise about George and also Izzie's wedding. Normally I pick up on these things but I thought it was very emotional and I loved it.
George would not have made it this far in real life, but neither would Meredith or Christina, not to mention Izzie. I like them though and love the development of McSteamy's character (brilliant doctor cad becomes brilliant doctor sensitive)takes the place of underachiever George bumbling through life as well as medicine. He should have left when Isiah Washington was forced off. I don't like McArmy either. Dump him as well. Keep Izzie and let Alex be happy.
I agree with this article. George was gone a while ago, he was may favorite from the begining and I was so upset that his storyline was basically non-existent that I stopped watching. But you reap what you sow ..George and Burke where a good team, and thanks to T.R., Burke is gone (maybe now Burke can come back). Izzie SHOULD DIE too.. she is so annoying! The show needs a couple of new faces to refreshen, it seems to be running it's course.
I know people won't agree with me, but the drop in prominence of his character's storylines was related to his coming out of the closet / Isaiah Washington f-word scandal.  I think it's stinks cause he was a great character, but i think it had more to do with offscreen life than his onscreen one.
Ok, so I don't think they are going to get rid of George....just T.R. Knight because of the disfigurement, Dr. MCSteamy can just give us George back.  Albeit with a new face and hopefully, a better story line to include the woman he saved from being hit by the bus.
As far as Izzie's concerned, I really want her back.  I like her and Alex together.  I went back and watched all the old episodes and watched their love unfold.  It is a beautiful story.
Kill them, Kill them all.  Move the hospital to Chicago, make it an ER setting.  In other words bring back ER and cancel Grey's!  It's really best for everyone - no more whiny actors who can't get along and no more boring storylines ...
I thought George got the shaft. He was a sweet part to the show. Izzie, however, was too much. Dead Denny was a bit over the top, and I hope him being "here for her" actually comes to fruition, and she kicks it.
They got rid of TR Knight, not necessarily George.

The character I miss the most is the old Bailey. Bring back Nazi Bailey.  Touchy feely, crying Bailey is as annoying as George and Izzie.
Maybe now he can actually play a gay character on a show, especially since that is who he is. The sad part is that his G.A. character always provided comic relief for a show that, otherwise, became drab.
George was one of my favorite characters.  Like many others, I disliked his role the past two seasons, but will still miss him.  I think the show is having ridiculous story lines and if Meridith and McDreamy's marriage fails, I will quit watching.  It's time to let the audience know a marriage can work.
I like George!  Disfigured face that McSteamy fixes...the girl who he saved could be a med-tech there at the hospital and that relationship could bloom.  Get rid of Izzie.  I don't want the next season to be centered around her!
