By George, the old O'Malley will be missed

I'll miss Dr. George O'Malley on "Grey's Anatomy." And yet, I won't miss Dr. George O'Malley on "Grey's Anatomy."

ABC
By George, the old O'Malley will be missed.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello revealed Wednesday that actor T.R. Knight won't be returning to the ABC medical drama. I suspect my divided feelings about this are shared by many "Grey's" fans, for a very simple reason. The George O'Malley who ended up disfigured and possibly dying on the show's season finale hadn't been the original George O'Malley for quite some time.

Remember back when the show started? George was kind of a puppy-dog character. He was the guy friend that all the show's beautiful women turned to instinctively, yet when he became romantically involved with them, it was always a disaster. Who doesn't know someone like that?

Part of George's charm was that he made mistakes. In romance, in friendship, and also, professionally. He was dubbed "007" for his "license to kill" when he choked while performing surgery. Later in the third season, he failed his intern exams and had to go through the mortification of repeating the internship while his friends all moved on.

One of my favorite George plots involved his family. The O'Malleys weren't used that much on the show, but they lit up the screen whenever they appeared. Unlike Meredith's wrenching family life, with an Alzheimer's-stricken mother who never seemed to care for her and a father who started a new family without her, George came from a close-knit group. His brothers, Jerry and Ronny, teased him like crazy, but it was revealed that they respected him as the family hope, the one smart boy who was making good. His dad, played by the delightful George Dzundza, was always entertaining, and his death felt more wrenching than most losses on "Grey's."

Despite a strong start, George's plotlines wavered and stumbled. First he slept with Meredith, his big crush -- what was that about? Then he ran off with Callie Torres, a plot that seemed to exist mostly so she could refer to herself as "Callie O'Malley." But the Callie relationship was a hundred times better than the real disaster, the George-Izzie love affair, dubbed "Gizzie" by viewers. While I could buy that George and Callie found comfort in each other, George and Izzie never rang true as a couple to me, and from then on, Knight's character was just kind of lost. Even his dramatic (presumed) death scene felt cribbed from that "ER" episode where Dennis Gant's beeper goes off and the other doctors realize the mangled body on their table is their co-worker and friend.

Show creator Shonda Rhimes told Ausiello that she intentionally cut back on George's plotlines in this last season to make her final-episode twist work. Her theory is supposedly that fans were used to not seeing George, so when he didn't show up much in the episode, no one would make the leap that he was the disfigured John Doe who saved a woman from death by bus.

Yeah, I'm not buying it. If George's character had been as integral a part of the show as, say, Sandra Oh's Cristina, there's no way his role would have been cut back for a shocking twist. It's sad that a character with so much promise ended up fizzling out. I'd say I'll miss him, but I've already been missing him for several seasons now.

Should "Grey's Anatomy" have killed off George? And what should happen to his fellow dying doctor, Izzie? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Izzie can stay only if shwe is a ghost like her late love.  I will miss George, he was the only one that was not self-centered.  Everyone thinks it's about them.
As a nod to both T.R. Knight's performance and the quality of the character George we both love, the show ought to have him survive, and the girl he saved who views him as her prince charming/savior can nurse him back to health. Before George goes for good, the writers ought to be nice enough to at least let him have a happy ending with a woman who truly loves him... Anything less is just unfair...
Kudos to those of you who knew it was George.  I didn't and thought it was a great finale.  I would like to see Heigl leave the show.  I hated the Gizze thing and actually stopped watching for a season or so.  I also am so tired of this whiney, crazy and self-absorbed character. I am tired of a lot of things on this show. It seems like Rhimes did a good job at first but now geez! That whole thing with the stupid new interns behavior was just dumb! The only story line I like right now is McSteamy and girlfriend.
I really think George was a stron character that the show has ruined.  They have focased to much on Merideth and the weird sex and relationships with others in the show.  He added a real down to earth feel to the show.  He was warm and caring and funny.  They really need to recast him and let the other doctors fix him up and focus more on his character in the show.  Give some life to Grey's instead of taking it away with him!!!!!
I love George, and was never a big Izzy fan.  Why couldnt they just let Izzy flatline, and send George off to the army without killing him off?  Makes more sense, at least he could come back and visit.
We (yup, even my husband) love this show.  Whatever the ups & downs of the cast, the show's always entertaining & a great way to slide into the weekend.  TR Knight is a loss... he was the quintessential buddy.  Hope he does more TV at some point.
"Early George" gave the show some heart and normalcy that faded with his fading participation in the show. The transition should not have been plotted - they should have left him alone. The show was better then, and certainly better than it will be from now on.
stopped watching the show a long time ago,  plots had become predictable and they took good characters and instead of building on them, they would try to re-write them into something new that was never believable and made up these rediculous story lines . ..  the show is dying, George is lucky to have escaped when he did
I think that the show' finale was one of their best, I like many others were shocked to see the way the finale ended.Izzy and George are great actors and i hate to see either killed off their are so many possiblities here, like George could come back and have a love interest with the woman he saved, and Izzy cant be gone because Grey's cant be that cruel to poor Alex, He hardly has trust or faith in anyone, and now we can see the softer side of Alex, not mushy but one with a little romantic side. Please bring them both back and TJ if you read any of these comments we love you and want you back.
I was in shock that George was the John Doe.  I was so upset that this was the send off he got from the show.
I will miss George on the show.  Izzie needs to be gone.
The show needs a new direction.  Getting rid of Callie would be good too.  Seems to be the same old same old anymore.   The show needs some new life.
I love this show and having been watching it since the pilot before most people even knew what it was. I loved the show season 1 and 2 were just amazing but something changed after Burke left the show just hasnt been the same.
Whenever any writer of a television production, especially one that gets both public esteem and scrutiny, allows the actors to dictate the direction their characters take, you can be assured that disaster is right around thearound the corner. Remember Katherine Heigl's public rant about not beig given enough storyline of interest, quickly followed by Sondra Rimes' assurances that "something big" was in the cards of "Izzie?"  The moment that happened, I knew "Grey's Anatomy" was in trouble.  An executive producer who also writes a program absolutely must lead her characters, not the other way around.  If not, you end up with such nonsense as Izzie wandering around talking to the ghost of a love that ought never have been killed off in the first place.  I felt like I was watching this generation's "Bobbie in the shower" scene, where writer's of another popular show where the actor's had far too much say had to excuse the awful direction they had taken by telling us it had all simply been a dream.  If Sondra Rimes doesn't take up the leadership she had when this show was still new and fresh, it is likely to follow in the same direction as that long-ago program, with "Grey's Anatomy" becoming as much of a nightmare as it was.  I suggest she get back to using storylines based upon her own, true-life experiences, as, by cow-towing to her actors' unreasonable demands, she has gotten us into this wholly unbelieble mess we are in right now.  (In fact, out of curiosity, I just googled the phrase "actor's unreasonable demands, and guess which actress came up as the #1 hit on that little search?)
Let's rid ourselves of another endearing character... first Burke, now George.  Keep shuffling the players and they all might as well wear nametags!
I really hate that they killed George and izzie off! i love both of these characters and love heigl. So what if she is a diva...most of them are. George and the girl he saved would have been a great story line for him! And just when Izzie  and Alex finally gave into each other, they "KILL" her off! iT SUCKS!
Im suprised by all the anti-izzy people.  I think the show needs her character...and alex needs her. Id also like to see Georges character stay, even if his character stays disfigured and disabled, then could possibly be played by someone else.  but I like George, especially the "old George" but I like his character regardless.  Every character on this show serves a purpose, its sad to see them rid of.
They shouldn't stop at George.  They should kill off Izzie, too.  And Karev.  And Derek.  But especially Meredith.
The show is so over..there's no word for how over it's over. It needs to go and get Life on Mars back on!
Of all the characters that have been introduced on Grey's why in the world would George be best choice to be knocked off.  Isn't McSteamy like the world's great plactic surgeon?  Surely, he can fix our boy!  I don't enjoy anything about the Izzie and Alex match-up.  That last minute marriage that Izzie had planned every detail of!  Who in the world didn't see that coming?  Grey's has become the new Knots Landing.  I'm tuning out...
I had a sneaky feeling all season that he'd get written out - and I feel so sad for it. The poor guy just had nothing going for him..I was really looking forward to seeing him come back with a bang and be happy - it looked promising because of what Hunt had said to him. But then they went and did that??? It sucked! Not to mention that they're filling in all these new, half assed characters like Arizona and Erica and barely doing anything with them.
Sigh.
I miss the old Greys. :( RIP George. Your storylines have sucked for ages, but it's hardly your fault. I'll miss you!
George was the best character they had because most people could relate to him. He stopped being George after he passed his exams and dismissed "Little Grey's" feelings for him. Now, Callie and Sloan are the only characters I enjoy.
George was never the same after the Gizzie disaster but he was still a great character. He was the nice boy everyone loved but took for granted. I think most people want George to stay, Izzie was the one who should have left. Her character has become increasingly annoying over the seasons and it does seem to me that the actress in real ife doesn't appreciate this show anymore. It seems she wants to be the lead and she can't expect that because the show is not called Izzie's Anatomy. What a dud this show would have been if it was!
Tread lightly Ms. Rhimes. The entire Dead Denny thing almost made the show flatline. The best thing that could happen is for McSteamy to save George and Izzy to go into a coma.
Bring them both back.  George, who's face is unnoticeable, bring in a different actor as George, (he'll have to have reconstruction on his face), that way the character is still alive, just not the same actor.  Will get together with the girl he "saved".
Izzie, I think should survive.
I really like Izzie.. and i am glad she is staying on. I think they need to write her a bit better, that mayber her cancer will maker her stronger. less whiney. that annoys me.  I will miss George.. but i miss the sweet, innocent George too...
Wow... Can I just say DRAMA!!! Poor Geoge, never stood a chance. He will definetly be missed. But I think Izzie should stay on the show, Izzie & Alex's love is so strong it's the only thing on that show that seems good & right in a world like this... My Grandmother had cancer so I can relate to her. They really need serenity on the show, On all show's I must say, not cheating & no care for the opposite sex.
I loved George and his psuedo-innocence! I will miss his baby face. I love Izzie and have cried with her several times! And I have yelled at Meredith to wake up and smell the roses and marry her man so many times it's not even real! And well, Yang..Shes just a mess! I am a single nurse and just wish my work place could be so interesting!
I really love the whole show. Plots, characters & Actors. Shows sometimes go through growing pains and this may just be Grey's time. I really hate to see any of the actors go. But when they do go I wish them all the best in what ever they do next.
George was always my favorite character and I really miss seeing him this past year's episodes.  I loved him with Callie but NOT with Izzie.  I wish George's characters was sticking around (disfigured or not) and Izzie would be the one to die off on the show.  Good luck to TR Knight - I am sure we will be seeing him again.
George's character was defintely getting a little stale this last season, and although a good actor, I will not miss him.  Izzie has always carried more of a story line, and gives Grey's anatomy some pizzaz.  I'm not saying I'd like to see George off the show, but if i had to choose one to stay, it would be Izzie. She sparkles on the screen, even acting as a cancer stricken patient. I'd like to see Izzie come back next season, and now is the time to introduce some fresh blood on the show.  Maybe some new eye candy for the girls?
Get rid of Izzie!!  Get rid of Izzie!!  Get rid of Izzie!!

Ditto Ditto Ditto.
I've recently rewatched all seasons of Grey's and realized why George had been my favorite character.  I'd much rather have Izzie die than George and have the real George, the one from seasons 1 & 2 return.  We need a character we can truly relate to and George is that character!
I have loved George since the first season.  His puppy dog eyes and his mistakes and heartbreak have been the most interesting to watch.  I was very upset that they used him as an extra this last season, and when they revealed John Doe to be George in the season finale, it broke my heart.  I literally had nightmares for days.  I hate it when shows do this! Couldn't they just ship him off to the army? That way he could possibly come back.  This was cruel and messed up and it still upsets me.  BRING BACK GEORGE (and by this i mean T.R.!!!!)
I love George, bring George back, there is so much potential for more stories with George, he would need a new face which causes so much confusion, his mother should be brought in more to support George's recovery. I would hate to see George go, George as a character would leave a giant hole in Grey's Anatomy.
I will miss George!! I do not understand why they killed him.. and I dont want Izzie to die.. I thimk that she will survive..
