Farrah was more than a beauty

Two things will stay in my memory about the sad loss of Farrah Fawcett. One is the image of her grown son, Redmond O'Neal, fresh from jail, crawling into bed with his dying mom, as shown on the touching documentary "Farrah's Story." And the other is simply a line from an article published when her illness returned, where Ryan O'Neal reported that her famous hair was gone.

You didn't have to have a million-selling poster to relate to Farrah's struggle.

Those two items remind us that Farrah was more than a poster. She was a mom, and although Redmond's troubles with drugs and the law are well-known, she was a mom who loved her son and surely tried to do the best by him.

And the loss of her hair ... as anyone who's had or loved someone with cancer knows, few things make you feel as naked as that one loss. Women, especially, set so much store by our hair. O'Neal said that the loss was especially hard for Farrah, because she probably had the most famous hair in the world. I thought about that statement and tried to think of anyone with more famous hair ... Don King? Jennifer Aniston? The biblical Samson? No, Farrah's hair probably wins. Thinking of her without those famed feathers is sobering, because for all her fame, she was one of us.

Even if you never saw a single role of Fawcett's, if you were alive in the 1970s and 1980s, your life was influenced by her. Just pick up a high-school yearbook and see how many of your friends wore the Farrah 'do. No one could do it as well as the original.

Farrah's most remembered for her one season on "Charlie's Angels," but she later fought back against being considered just a pretty face. Her work in "The Burning Bed" and "Extremities" were all the more stunning because of her looks -- we didn't expect to see that beauty playing a serious role, and doing it well. For me, the most memorable Fawcett role is her portrayal of Diane Downs in the movie based on Ann Rule's "Small Sacrifices." Downs murdered one of her children and paralyzed another, and Fawcett somehow dived into that horrible crime and made Downs a three-dimensional person. Unnerving and unforgivable, but three-dimensional.

I was one of the millions who sat rapt on my couch to watch "Farrah's Story," the documentary about her cancer battle. Her time in hospitals was a jolting reminder for all of us of our own individual losses and struggles, the times we've spent in those same generic hospital rooms with those same wall-mounted TVs, wearing plastic bracelets and drinking water out of styrofoam cups. The show reminded us of how we take our own health and that of our family for granted until the ball drops and there we are, back in those antiseptic-smelling hallways waiting for doctors to tell us news that could either lift us up or smash our hearts.

You didn't have to have a hit television show or a world-famous hairdo or a zillion-selling poster to relate to Farrah's struggle. In her life she entertained us, and in her death, she reminded us of what's really important. Carl Sandburg once wrote, "Death sends a radiogram every day: When I want you I'll drop in -- and then one day he comes with a master-key and lets himself in and says: We'll go now." No one can lock death out, not even an Angel.

WOW!  I am so sorry to hear this. Poor Ryan. At least now she is not in such agnozing pain with the loves of her life watching her suffer. Many prayers for Ryan and Redmond. You will be missed Farrah.
God Bless Farrah may she rest in peace I was so deeply touched by her T.V. special in so many ways the love story between her and Ryan O'Neil the unpresidented love for her son and the beautiful friendship with Alana and of course the struggles people face every day with cancer we love you Farrah and will miss you!
She is home with the Lord. Let her life have an impact on all of us and may it be a witness to all of us.  I pray she knows Jesus and her life bring others of us to Christ.  God bless Ryan and Redmond and may you feel His comforting arms around you.
I'll always remember her in those toothpaste commercials among other eras of her life for Ultra Brite. She had such a beautiful smile and the prettiest teeth.  She will be missed.
I've been struggling with anal cancer for 4 years now.  Farrah taught me to stay strong, and always look ahead.
Speedy journey, lovely lady.  You will be missed.
It takes a special person to do what Farrah did, displaying her illness to the world. She was more than a superstar, she proved to the world that she wasn't above the rest of us. My prayers go out for her family at this time. We will always love you Farrah!

What a tremdous loss in so many ways. She was such a beautiful and talented woman - will always be remembered..God Bless her family and loved ones. Always remember her with a smile - she would have wanted that
In her toughest moments, she thought of others by producing her documentary, which was extremely moving.  My thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones.
I was amazed at Farrah's grace and strength while watching her documentary.  I went to bed balling my eyes out that night as I related it to my father's battle with pancreatic cancer.  I will go to bed tonight with the same heavy heart.  Why can't we leave the angels on earth and let the devils be taken, instead?
What type of cancer did she die from
EVERYONE that is handed the unbelievable diagnosis of CANCER fights like a wild dog to stay alive.  Farrah's story is indeed a sad one, but she is like each and every person that sucommed to cancer - always a true hero and always a fighter.  My thoughts go out to her family and friends, but also to every family that has lost a loved one to this awful disease.
Gael,
Reading your article brings tears to my eyes. I was and still am a huge Farrah fan. God bless Farrah and her loved ones.

I am so saddened by this. My heart literally hurts.
What a sad day for her family and friends; and for all of us who imitated the "do". Farrah was an actress who desired and demanded respect for her craft. The loss will be huge.
She waged a brave and valiant fight against this disease; for this she will always be remembered.
I saw both "The Burning Bed" and "Small Sacrifices".  Farrah was just phenomenal in both movies.  I had read the book by Ann Rule and I thought she just did a fantastic job portraying that evil woman.  I was so sad to read of her death.  May God bless those she left behind.
My heart goes out to the family and friends whom were so close to this angel of and icon I,m 44yrs old and I can remember everything about her during the time when she was on Charlies Angels, doing great movies, commercials, on screen movies such as the movie The Cookout I loved that funny side of her Farrah I will truly miss you but you will never be forgotten .  I want to say this when I was in my teens a black girl wanting  to get my hair just like Farrah that was one of the big impacts that you had on me I LOVE YOU FARRAH FOREVER
Fly free dear Angel, thank you for sharing your life with us.
My prayers are with all of you.  God Bless all the family and Farrah Fawcett, now she's with god.
My sister lay dying in a hospital at this very moment, dying of stage 4 ovarian cancer. She fights every day, saying that she is not a "quitter". Farrah was not a quitter. She fought a hard battle and I believe she would have continued to fight; unfortunately her body gave out before her spirit did. Blessings and comfort to her family and loved ones. Peace to Farrah- it is time to rest now.
This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.Farrah you are a beautiful person and may you rest in peace now. You will never be forgotten!!!!
GOD BLESS YOU YOUR AT PEACE NOW GOD'S ANGEL NOW.
Finally, no more pain.  You put up a brave fight, Farrah.  Rest in Heavenly peace.
Saddly, we knew that this day might come. But it it come too early for her. I had a crush on Farrah Fawcett, as a teenager in the 70's. I had that "Swimsuit" poster on my bedroom wall. My mom thought it was too sexy for me. But Farrah Fawcett did prove to be a fighter of her cancer. She considered should a role model for other cancer vitims.
I loved you Farrah. a whole generation did ..
you will be missed and ,,, I will keep your family in my prayers..
Heaven has just received the most beautiful angel..
thank you for being you..
Farrah you are the first true beauty i ever witness on the big screen. I am truly heartbroken rest beautiful your journey is over i will miss you dearly, love you always rest in peace. One of your biggest FANS.
I knew it.  I watched it coming.  And I still wasn't prepared for it.  I'm so sorry.
God now holds you in his Hands, dear Angel.
Now you can rest with all the other angels
