Emmy preview: Time to get real

Emmy nominations come out on Thursday, so over the next three days, we’ll offer our thoughts on who should be nominated for the major awards in the reality, drama, and comedy categories. First up: The most controversial category of the three, reality shows. Love them or hate them, they’re here to stay.

ABC
Tom Bergeron's contributions to "Dancing With the Stars" shouldn't be overlooked.

Last year featured the first-ever Emmy for a reality-show host. Nominees were Tom Bergeron of “Dancing With the Stars,” Heidi Klum of “Project Runway,” Howie Mandel of “Deal or No Deal,” Ryan Seacrest of “American Idol,” and Jeff Probst of “Survivor.” Probst won, and deservedly so.

But look at those five names again. Which of these things is not like the other? Come on, Emmys! Any grade-schooler can tell you that “Deal or No Deal” is a game show, not a reality show, so Mandel should not even be in this grouping. And where’s Phil Keoghan of “The Amazing Race”? That show has won the outstanding reality show Emmy ever since the award was created. Keoghan needs to be among the nominees this year.  Probst and Keoghan would both be deserving winners, and Seacrest has to juggle a lot and think on his feet. But I think the overlooked nominee in this category is “Dancing’s” Bergeron. Even when the celebs are sniping or Bruno Tonioli is calling rapper Lil’ Kim trampy, Bergeron manages to keep things smooth, family-friendly, and entertaining.

Only one show has ever won the outstanding reality competition award, and that’s “The Amazing Race.” (Which makes it even stranger that host Phil Keoghan was passed over last year. He’s at the heart of that show.)

Now I love “The Amazing Race,” you love “The Amazing Race,” but come on, isn’t it somebody else’s turn? Nominated last year along with “TAR” were “American Idol,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “Project Runway” and “Top Chef.” And yes, while Jeff Probst won for best host, his show, “Survivor,” wasn’t nominated. Does this make sense to anyone? So the Emmys team thinks “Race” is a great show, but that it’s no thanks to Keoghan, and that Probst is a great host, but his show isn’t even worthy of a nomination? “Survivor” isn’t exactly my cup of boiled jungle water, but every time I catch an episode I’m reminded how solidly entertaining it is. The casting is always outstanding and surprising, Tribal Council is smartly edited, and even the reward and immunity challenges somehow stay fresh. The tribe has spoken.

There were rumors that the Emmys would add a category for outstanding reality-show judge, but that didn’t happen this year. I believe it’s inevitable, and if the first award doesn’t go to “American Idol’s” Simon Cowell, the fix is in. You can say good things about “Dancing’s” Carrie Ann Inaba and Mary Murphy of “So You Think You Can Dance” (a show that should probably get its own nomination). Still, no one soars above their show in the same way Cowell does. The "Idols" nod and smile at the comments from the other judges, but it’s Cowell who counts, and everyone knows it.

Any thoughts on reality shows and personnel who should be recognized? Should "Amazing Race" continue to win every year? Does "So You Think You Can Dance" deserve a nomination? Are Bergeron and Keoghan deserving hosts? And is a judges' category a good addition to the show? Share your thoughts in the comments. Dramas and comedies are coming up next.

Now that Phil is getting a little more air time in TAR, he may get a nod.  But Jeff really controls the tribal councils, asking great questons.  Don't know why Survivor wasn't nominated.  NEVER want to see reality show judges nominated.Might as well have movie critics get an Oscar.
I agree that Jeff Probst does a great job on Survivor, but I really wanted Tom Bergeron to win the best host Emmy.  He really has to deal with so much (including incompetent sidekicks, but that's another story), that I think he's definitely earned it!  Who else could handle bickering judges, cranky contestants, and people passing out with the class and humor that he does?  Think back to when Marie Osmond passed out - he checked on her and looked at the cameras and told them (and us) that we needed to go to break.  You have to be confident to deal with the stuff that's thrown his way...And I think he does a great job!

And, I LOVE the Amazing Race and think Phil should be nominated, but I would still give the award to Tom :o)
You sound like a Little League baseball parent who thinks every kid should get to play regardless of talent.  If someone wants to take the Emmy from TAR then give us a better show.  Race is well executed, smartly edited, and opens the entire world to the viewers. (With one camera per couple, I can't imagine how many films crews are needed to pull off this one show.) Compared to some other shows in the category, there's just no contest. So if someone wants it, tell them to up the ante- don't deny it to the best because "they've already won." Boo hoo, Cindy Lou.
Emmys for reality shows. Mother of God. And what's next? More Emmys in this category like Best Villain/Villainess? Most Tragic Trainwreck? Person Most Willing To Humilate Themselves Just To Get On TV? Most Promiscuous Contestant? Contestant Most Willing To Demonstrate His/Her Complete All-Encompassing Stupidity To The World?
I agree with Katie Spring (see above). Tom Bergeron is certainly the best in my book. Keep in mind, that while Phil and Jeff are for the most part filmed which means they can have do-overs, Tom is doing it all LIVE. That would be a much harder job. However, I do think that The Amazing Race is the best reality show over all and Phil deserves recognition. Last year, I was shocked when Heidi Klum was nominated and Phil was not. They aren't even in the same league when it comes to hosting.
No need to have a "best reality judge" emmy.  They should be in the same category as the host.  The combined award would be for best "non-contestant personality" to include hosts, judges, and side-kick interviewers.
How about "Mythbusters"? Can that be considered "reality"?

What about "America's Got Talent"?

I don't even watch these other shows.

This is rediculous... emmys for these stupid reality shows. All of you who watch them are just simply trailer trash.  I'm off to read the real news.
I can't believe that you totally overlooked Cat Deeley.  She is a fantastic host.  Smart, personable, extremely kind, handles difficult sitations with finesse and aplomb and is definitely easy on the eyes.  She should definitely win an Emmy for So You Think You Can Dance.  She is a big part of what makes the show worth watching.  Amazing Race is a good show, but it's not like the the host really has that much to do.  Cat has to spend a lot of time on stage and deals with a variety of situations as host.  She is a model of civility and kindness and that should be rewarded.
Phil Koeghan wasn't nominated because like it or not he doesn't contribute much to the show.  Bergeron is good and so is Ryan but Probst is involved in every part of the show and it's evident to regular viewers.  I think Probst should win again, and I agree that TAR which I love has gotten a bit stale and it's time for American Idol to win best show.
I've never watched Survivor or The Amazing Race (part of an on-going boycott of CBS), and only caught a few episodes of Dancing With The Stars but have to say how INCREDIBLY impressed I was with Tom Bergeron. All I remembered him from was America's Funniest Home Videos in which he was okay, but had some really lame lines. On DWtS, he was witty, sly, and entertaining, yet kept it all family friendly. LIVE. There weren't awkward pauses or stutters while he reached for a pre-written line, he made it all seem like he was ad-libbing it (which he probably was) and he did it with panache. Tom Bergeron deserves that Emmy. Seacrest is live too but awkward and full of himself, and too reliant on faux-fights with Cowell, and Klum is okay but stilted because of the language barrier. Now if they wanted to nominate side-kicks, Tim Gunn would get my vote.
The Amazing Race most certainly should win again this year.  The Emmys recognize that the work and effort needed to have TAR run smoothly is 10x that of the other nominees in the category.  Only Survivor comes close.  That, coupled with the drama and comedy and action of the Race is a winning recipe.

And Phil Keoghan definitely deserves at least a nomination this year.  Last year's snub was inexcusable!
Tom Bergeron should be recognized, not only for Dancing with the Stars but for his body of work over the years.  He is very witty, handles the temperamental judges very well and treats the contestants with respect--and does it all on live TV
Tom won't get an Emmy because his show is lighthearted. Even though he manages to put up with that half-wit Sam Harris, no statue for the smooth, witty wonder. As Mary Lynn pointed out - Tom is live but with it being b stars dancing, he just won't get recognition. Best judge? I *judge* that to be too subjective. Besides, Cowell blew it this year with his constant promotion of Adam Lambert. Even Jamie Foxx had an inkling about Kris Allen when he was on Idol as a mentor. Note to Simon, don't pi** off your viewers.
