Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock ... Emmy!

A year or so ago, my parents were singing the praises of CBS's Monday night comedy lineup, most notably "Two and a Half Men," and their new favorite show, "The Big Bang Theory." Not being a big fan of the "Men," I was dubious about "Bang" as well. But one Monday night, I decided to give it a try. Mom, Dad ... I will never doubt you again (well, except for "Men.").

This tale of uber-nerds struggling to function in the world outside of astro-physics has slowly been winning over converts like me -- and rising in the ratings -- in its second season. So, for those of you who think a show about scientists, where the storylines center around trips to the comic book store, Dr. George Smoot (look him up on your Google-nets, kids) and a waste-management module for the International Space Station, couldn't possibly be funny, take it from my Mom and Dad, it is. It also features some of the smartest writing in television. Period.

At the center of this nerd-fest is Dr. Sheldon Cooper, brilliantly played by Jim Parsons. Parsons gives depth and humanity to what could have become an Urkel-esque caricature of a nerd. Despite his many obsessions and insufferable personality ticks, Parsons still makes Sheldon likable.

So, when it comes to the nominees for best lead actor in comedy you don't need to play a game of rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock to come up with the winner -- it's Parsons.

And while you are at it, Academy, please don't forget "The Big Bang Theory" and Kaley Cuoco when you announce the nominees for best comedy and lead comedic actress on July 16. The writing and the cast make this the funniest show on TV. And Cuoco's Penny is more than just a pretty face.

Here are the other nominations I'd like to see. With any luck, the Academy will agree.

Best comedy
"The Big Bang Theory" (CBS)
"Flight of the Conchords" (HBO)
"Family Guy" (Fox)
"How I Met Your Mother" (CBS)
"30 Rock" (NBC)

Lead actor in a comedy
Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory"
Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock"
Steve Carell, "The Office"
Jemaine Clement, "Flight of the Conchords"
Neil Patrick Harris, "How I Met Your Mother"

Lead actress in a comedy
Kaley Cuoco, "The Big Bang Theory"
Tina Fey, "30 Rock"
Mary-Louise Parker, "Weeds"
Eva Longoria Parker, "Desperate Housewives"
Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"

And one more thing, Academy, make sure Craig Ferguson is among your nominees for best host of a comedy or variety show. "The Scottish Conan guy," who is on after David Letterman, is the brightest light on late-night TV. No band, no sidekick. Just his own imagination. And singing puppets.

Which shows and stars make you laugh? Who do you think is Emmy-worthy this year?

I could not agree more that BBT should receive Emmy nominations for its acting and writing. It's quick and bright, and a vacation from all of the other garbage that is on TV right now.
Could not agree more with every part of this.  Jim Parsons is providing comedic genius. He takes a twitch of an eyelid and the flaring of a nostril and turns it into intense physical comedy. And I've been impressed that they avoided turning Kaley Cuoco's character into a dumb blond. Rather, she's just an average, but very hot, person, living amongst another culture, trying her best to adapt. This and HIMYM make Monday night a don't miss (except for Men, which I've never cared for.

As for TV's Craig Ferguson, you are right again. He is more consistently funny that Conan, and funnier in one night than Leno was in 2 decades. His unbridled joy in where he is in life is fun to watch.  I'd like to see him hosting the Emmys in the future.
My husband and I are converts to "The Big Bang Theory" too. At first we thought the show would be stupid, now we are totally hooked on it. I am really missing it this summer, and can't wait until the guys get back from their arctic expedition to see if Sheldon made it out alive! lol
Big Bang all the way. My 5 year old loves "The Sheldon Show" as he calls it. Penny giving Sheldon Spock's autograph was the highlight of the show.
The Big Bang Theory has been my favorite comedy since it premiered. It is smart and funny, and Parsons is the best! But I just love Raj and Wolowitz too.
I have to agree on both points.  "Men" toilet humor and enough already.  Big Bang is hysterical. If you don't watch - give it a chance, you won't be disapointed.
My friends and family were probably wishing I would just shut up already after the first season of Big Bang - I talked about it all the time. It is by far the most well written and well casted show on television.I also think that Laurie Metcalf should get an Emmy nomination for Guest Appearance on a Comedy Series. She was perfect as Sheldon's mom.
I too don't care for Two and a half men - it's not smart or clever, it's just about seeing how much they can get away with each week. Family Guy might do some of that too, but at least it is clever, funny and keeps everyone on their toes.
The Big Bank Theory is my favorite tv comedy. Jim Parsons deserves the Emmy for lead actor in a comedy. I hope that the show wins the award for Best Comedy as the entire cast makes the show the best. And kudos to the writers, as well. I also like watching the grown-up "Darlene and David" (Sara Gilbert and Johnny Galecki) working together again.
I love The Big Bang Theory!!!  I never thought I'd love a bunch of nerds so much!  It's a great cast and the stories are wonderfully written!  Other shows' writers could take a lesson from the witty writing of this sitcom!
So, you actually pick THE OFFICE over Two and a Half Men?  That's got to be the worst "comedy" on the air.  And FAMILY GUY?  Gimme a break.  But I agree on BBT,  The only thing really holding the show together is Sheldon, unfortunately.  It is the single most hilarious comedy on TV in a long time.
The Big Bang Theory is an old-school Sitcom. And I like that. There aren't many of those around these days. If you like BBT, you might want to give Better Off Ted and Eureka a try, as well.
do one of these for Dramas, most notably for excellent Dramas that have been cancelled in favor of sex-infused reality "tv" programs, a la Eli Stone!

Sorry.  Just had to throw that in there.  BBT is the best, and it is a nice vacation from all the garbage.  CBS hands down takes Primetime, but NBC holds late night (time to replace Letterman?).  What I don't understand is you like BBT, but not "Men", but yet you praise the writers for BBT for an excellent job.  You are aware that you're talking about the same team for both programs, no?
BBT has a wonderful, well-rounded ensemble cast, but Jim Parsons is absolutely perfect.  His valium performance is one I keep on my DVR permanently and watch it when I need a lift.  BRAVO Jim!!
I am in complete and total agreement about BBT.  I can't even believe it is still on as the writing is so smart to be over most peoples head but I am glad to know the viewing public is appreciated intelligent humor.  I like Two and Half Men but BBT leaves them in the dust when it comes to intelligence in writing and wit.
Could not agree more.  Emmys for "Big Bang", writing and especially Jim Parsons.  Kelly Cuoco?  Not so much.  How many series have asymptote jokes?  The best part of the series?  The 'vanity' title cards at the end.  They blow by in a blink of an eye, so unless you have TiVO or the DVDs, you cannot stop them to see them.

Oh, absolutely AMEN!! Jim and Kaley SOOOOO deserve the Emmys!!!

The writing is brilliant, the acting is funny yet believable (I have to admit to being a "Sheldon"... my sister calls me "Shelly")

I would also recommend an Emmy to Check Lorre for writing!!

this has to be my most favorite comedy show. Sheldon's inability to comprend male/female sexual attraction cracks me up. Can someone that age really be that clueless? I hope it get win the whole shabang!
While I agree that "Big Bang Theory" is a wonderful show, I can't imagine your dislike of "Men."  The writing is spectacular (and how the right-wing fanatics allowed the scripts to air without controversy is beyond me!), the cast among the best I've ever seen--and I laugh out loud at every episode.

But back to Big Bang--it is truly a hoot.  I, too, needed to give it several episodes.
I got hooked watching "Big Bang" half way through the first season. Hilarious! I hope it's nominated. The show, the writers and actors need to be recognized.
LOVE,LOVE,LOVE Big Bang Theory!! Rules of Engagement is hilarious too-don't you think??
Living with a scientist nerd for a husband and a Star Wars geek for a son as I do, BBT came highly recommended to me. I watched a couple of clips and was an immediate convert. I, of course, made my husband and son watch, too. It is now our new Monday night ritual. My husband and son SO relate to the science jokes, the love of trains, the Star Wars and Star Trek obsessions - all the geeky, nerdy stuff. Where else can you hear a great quantum physics joke in prime time? The writing is smart, funny and fast paced and the acting is just first rate.
I have been watching Big Bang since the first episode, which I have to let all of you converts out there know, it was the best eposide by far!
I agree about Flight of the Concords - it's time someone finally brought that up in the same sentence as "Emmy nomination"
I think "Big Bang" is great, as is Jim Parsons AND the rest of the cast members.  I also agree that Craig Ferguson is the best at late night entertaining.
I REALLY hope that Neil Patrick Harris's hosting gig will not impact either his nomination or (in my opinion) deserved win. He is hysterical and completely brings Barney a depth that womanizers like Charlie on Two and a Half Men lack.
I got hooked on the BBT in the middle of the 2nd season.  I never laughed so much in my life!  Jim Parsons make 'smart' SEXY!  *whew*
I absolutely LOVE Big Bang Theory!  I'm a little worried that it might lose some of its viewership now that CBS has moved it to the 9:30 slot.  This is the only show I stopped everything to watch consistently week after week.
I usually avoided Monday night television when football was not in season.  Now, I go out of my way to clear my schedule and watch.

Aside from Two and a half Men (which has simply gone stale and relies more on raunch), all of the shows (BBT, How I Met Your Mother, and Rules of Engagement) are worth watching. The entire cast of BBT have great chemistry with each other. The writing is spot on.
I must add my kudos to Denise about her comments of Bing Bang Theory. This show is just simply...funny. My wife WORKS with these kind of guys in an IT department, and she will tell me, that Sheldon is this guy at work, or Leonard is this guy at work. Even she is now a convert to this show. There truly is no other show that makes me laugh as hard as this show. I also agree that Sheldon DESERVES an Emmy.
From the shows Premier to the rerun I saw the other night...easily one of the top 3 comedies on television.  Parsons is great and Johnny Galecki is quietly understated as Sheldon's foil.
Denise, you are spot-on about BBT, Jim, Caley and most especially Craig! I have been a huge fan of Big Bang since the pilot episode and have talked it up incessantly to everyone ever since. The premise of the show may seem dorky and boring, but only until the first conversation between any of the four guys, and then it's just total hilarity. And Craig Ferguson is so real, and so out there! He's a joy to watch...
I love BBT and HIMYM, they are both great!  We are totally hooked at our house.  Thank God for DVR, my kids love to watch it over and over!
I just could never get into BBT...I found the characters just palin annoying. One show that is Emmy Nomination worth is ABC's "Better Off Ted" which is one of the wittiest, well written shows on the air right now!
OMG, I LOVE BBT!  Being a long time IT person, I can SO related to these fellow geeks!  There are so many classic episodes...Christine Baransky as Leonard's mom, Wolowitz's "Ma" (who is becoming another "Carlton the Doorman"), the battling robots, Sheldon and "his" spot on the couch, Raj's inabiity to talk to women, Leslie Winkle...I love it all!  I'd love to see the fan base continue to grow because I'm not ready to see these guys go yet!  Only one things bothers me...how does Penny afford to live alone in the same building with physicists?  As a part-time waitress at Cheesecake Factory, she's living pretty high on the hog...
Unfortunately Jim Parsons is not the lead actor.  Gilecki is.
Finally, FINALLY!!!  People talking about BBT and loving it!  When my husband and I started watching it we asked friends and family if they, too, loved it and ALAS, THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT! We are thrilled that the show is FINALLY getting the kudos and attention is so richly deserves!
Monday night is a great night for staying home and watching How I meet your Mother, Rules of Engagement both funny shows and the BBT it's okay but sometimes too corny...
My HUsband and I have been watching the big bang theory every monday since last year!! We always wonder why "Sheldon" was never nomintaed for any awards. He is one of the BEST actor to play his role perfectly..no one else can take his place! The show is AWESOME!!!
i so am a fan of the show.  by the way how/what are the perameters of the rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock hand game.  what does lizard win over? and does Spoke win over everything? and what is the sign for lizard?
I used to be a big fan of "Men"...but it's not fresh anymore...some old thing every week...it's time for that show to go...but BBT...what a great show!  Truly hysterical...ya gotta luv Sheldon and the guys...
BBT is certainly one of, if not the, best comedy on network TV right now. Also, you are spot on with Craig Ferguson! I should be asleep by then but it's worth staying up to watch the Late Late Show.
Admit it people, you get that "Huh" look on your face at some of the jokes on BBT. But I believe this show will become one for the ages. Thier already trying to copy it using Jenna Elfman. Parsons may deserve the Emmy, but he wont get it. And using some of the cast from RoseAnne is classic. We feel we already know these people and are ready to let it rock.
Definitely agree that BBT is a show to watch but disagree with the writer that "Men" is not worthy.  The writers on that show are unbelievable so it ranks up there with BBT.  Better than all these reality shows that are gimmics.
The "Flight of the Conchords" co-star and deserving Emmy nominee is actually Jemaine Clement, not Jermaine.
Amy Poehler in "Parks and Recreation"? That's the worst show on TV! Even she can't save it because the writing is so lame; she was MUCH funnier on SNL.
I kept telling people, only after a handful of shows in the 1st season, that BBT was going to be a runaway hit, and Jim Parsons was well on his way to being the best comedic actor on TV.  Parsons and Neil Patrick Harris play two of funniest characters on a sitcom in a long long time, and they make it seem so effortless.  It may have been intended originally for Galecki to be the main lead on BBT, but Parsons has been so absolutely spot on as Dr. Sheldon Cooper that he often steals the scenes and the episode.  Case in point.  There was the episode last season where they are up all night making Penny blossoms and they give Sheldon caffeine, prompting him to go into full hyperactive mode.  When Sheldon comes out in the last scene in his Flash costume, I was laughing so hard I fell on the floor.  Pure genius.  Literally.  Lets not forget the OCD like 3 knocks on Penny's door that Sheldon does every single time he goes over there, is becoming a staple of the show.  I hope the writing can remain fresh enough to keep BBT on for yrs to come.
I don't get it...I watched a few episodes int he first season and while there are some funny moments...this show is not worthy of anything, i can't believe it's even up against witty actually cleverly written shows such as The Office, 30 Rock and How I met Your Mother...i hate this show, sorry but it's just overly "fish out of water" scenarios and it's not clever at all.  and two and half men?  i can't even watch the wardrobe they have those guys in...let alone comedy..again...they have their funny moments, but not worthy of an award...i can't believe they were even given another friggin' season..maybe it's a comedy for people who are just not into witty humor, just slapstick. so that's over my head then.
My wife and I are 50+ plus year old viewers with two college age children, and we all think BBT is very, very funney and smart.  Here's hoping the writers can continue to challenge this gifted cast; the story line potential is endless.
OMG I totally love BBT now. Yes the writers are the same as BBT & "Men". I like both shows. I'm happy they changed the time slot this fall to 9:30. Used to miss it during Dancing With the Stars. Now I can watch. Sheldon is a total hoot and Kaley cracks me up also. They picked a good bunch of characters to play these folks. I hope they keep it up! One of the few comedies left that's enjoyable anymore.
I love Big Bang so much - I am watching the reruns this summer and laughing just as hard!  There is so much to the episodes - when you rewatch - you can catch little side glances and comments.
