Movie twist endings: Did you see that coming?

Warning: We're going to discuss movie spoilers here, especially in the comments, so don't read further if a spoiler for a certain flick will ruin your day.

Some friends were talking about "My Sister's Keeper" recently, and how the movie twist ending was different than that of the book. I finally couldn't stand it anymore, and had to ask them to tell me what happens in each version. I'm no fan of tear-jerkers, and I know I'm never going to see "My Sister's Keeper," yet all the hinting without a reveal was starting to drive me crazy. A friend filled me in, and now I feel satisfied: I don't have to see the movie, yet I know the ending. (If you also want to know the endings, of both the movie and the book, go here.)

Buena Vista Pictures
SPOILER: He sees dead people.

It's not that I don't love a good twist. I'm a big fan of "Twilight Zone," and there were some killer twists in that show (especially the Rod Serling original series). My favorite as a kid was the episode titled "Five Characters in Search of an Exit." A ballerina, a hobo, a bagpipe player, clown and army major seem to be trapped in a round dungeon and can't scale the walls to get out. GIANT SPOILER: The twist is that they're all dolls, and they're in a barrel of donated toys being collected for orphans. Sad, shocking, and weird, all in one.

Yet that was a half-hour TV show. Had the plot gone on for two hours, I'm not sure I'd remember it so fondly.

Yes, there are movie twist endings that work, and the best of them make you want to re-watch the entire movie to pick up the dropped hints. I figured out the twist in "The Sixth Sense" about halfway through, but the movie itself kept me spellbound and I didn't mind waiting for the reveal.

Another fabulous twist ending that didn't hurt the movie one bit: "The Usual Suspects." When "Kobayashi Chinaware" shows up on the bottom of Chazz Palminteri's coffee cup, I'm shocked along with him, even now that I've seen the movie a couple of times.

But when a twist ending goes bad, you sit there in your movie seat as the credits roll and wish you could ask for your money back. I felt that way after seeing "The Village." The film was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who's famous for twist endings -- "The Sixth Sense" was one of his. But "The Village" felt like a "Twilight Zone" that went on way, way too long. The ending was just dumb. (Don't know the twist? Read it here.) Roger Ebert wrote, "(the twist is) a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It was all a dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore."

Sites like MoviePooper.com and TheMovieSpoiler.com are great resources for those flicks where you're curious about the ending, but don't want to watch the entire movie. (Once I find out, though, I never spoil the ending for those who really don't want to know.  I don't want to be THAT guy.)

Have you seen any movies with twist endings lately? Is there a movie with a twist that just left you gasping? What about the opposite -- those films where you felt the twist was so lame, you wanted your money, and the past two hours, back? Here's another warning: We're going to talk about spoilers in the comments, so if that's not your thing, surf away now. The rest of you ... spoil away!

Talk about a movie that completely took artistic license with the end, how about The Horse Whisperer?  That was a ridiculous ending compared to the book.

I have to agree that Identity pulled off a great twist ending.  And kudos to the poster that mentioned Frailty!
The Harrison Ford/Michelle Pfeiffer movie is What Lies Beneath.
"Laura" is my favorite for plot twists.  OK - it's another old movie about a murder investigation.  Half way through the movie, in walks the victim.  Great cast, too - Gene Tierney, Clifton Webb, Dana Andrews and Vincent Price.  "Witness for the Prosecution" is another great one that you don't see coming.
"Usual Suspects", "The Game", "Se7en" & the one I haven't heard anyone mention yet "Primal Fear."  Had to watch the entire movie over again after the last twist.
1990 - Presumed Innocent - Harrison Ford.  Great twist at the end.
The old Twilight zone was great for the twist in many of its episodes. Of current movies I'd say Crying Game although The Usual Suspects & Sixth Sense
were both pretty good
Back in the 80s, the ending to the movie "No Way Out," one of Kevin Costner's first movies I can remember, absolutely stunned me.  I actually watched the movie because Gene Hackman was in it as a smarmy US Secretary of Defense, and Costner was kind of an afterthought as a young naval officer working in the Pentagon. I rented the movie (remember VCRs?) and rewound it several times so I could figure out how I had missed the clues. Even though this was a Cold War movie, I watched it again recently, and it holds up rather well.
Anybody seen THE STING (1974) ?

Greatest surprise ending, ever!
Nobody sees it coming, because the script makes you think you're in on the "con" the whole time.  When Redford and Newman lie on the ground after the shootout, and then get up and laugh it off - you know you've seen one of the all time great movies.
I have two. The movie "Passengers" w/ Anne Hathaway. Blew me away. Very good.

Also, I like the other magician movie (the name completely escapes me) with Ed Norton. That twist was awesome!!
OK, maybe "No Way Out" w/ Kevin Costner wasn't the greatest movie ever made, but the race against the clock right up to the end was so exciting, and I was so into rooting for the hero, and THEN the twist at the end.   OMG, stopped me in my tracks.
The best twist I've ever seen was the end of the original "Planet of the apes."

You maniacs! You blew it all up!!
Kevin Costner, of all people, had one of the best twists in "No Way Out."  That movie is uderrated, but ususally makes the cut when folks are discussing good twist endings.
"Angel Heart" with Mickey Roarke and Lisa Bonet.  I loved the ending.
2 words: Sleepaway Camp
Kevin Costner's "No Way Out" Still one of my favorites.
It certainly doesn't have good movie going for it.  But the best twist I have ever seen was 'From Dusk till Dawn'.  It was going along a bad movie and then a complete left turn into weird.
the crying game.  i absolutely felt robbed when this movie was over.  there was definitely a plot twist at the end but the whole movie just dragged out for me.  by the time i got to the end i didn't even care.
What about the first Saw? Very clever. None of the other Saw movies could touch that. They should have stopped there.
"No Way Out" - 1987 - I usually figure out the twist before the ending, but I was shocked at the ending to this one.
Well, I had to look it up because it's been a while, but I knew it had Christopher Reeve in it.  The movie was Deathtrap.  It was soooo much fun.  It twisted one way then another then another.  If you can find it, it's probably in the $1 section of your movie rental place.
This isn't a well known movie, but throughout the movie it keeps you guessing on what will happen and the ending is something you wouldn't expect... Lucky Number Slevin starring Josh Hartnett, Lucy Lui, Morgan Freeman, Stanley Tucci, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Bruce Willis to name a few big name stars.
C'mon. It has to be "The Ring". While it may not be exactly a twist - talk about surprise! I thought that freaky kid was dead already. First time I saw it was about 3:00 am. I made sure everything was locked up before I went to be
I have always liked the movie "Wild Things" with Kevin Bacon, Neve Campbell, Matt Dillon and Denise Richards. all the way through the movie i was having to rethink who and what was going on as the plot twists kept comming
Glad to see Frailty and Identity make the list.  While i'm not usually a big fan of movies with subtitles, Oldboy is worth it when it comes to a twist.  Spielberg and Will Smith are supposedly going to remake the movie but I doubt that American audiences can handle that same twist on a mainstream level.
Arlington Road. Never thought the "bad guys" would win.
The Others and Sixth Sense were both great, how did we not see that coming! I agree with everyone who liked Identity-rent it if you have not seen it. A Beautiful Mind was also very surprising. As for Stephen King's The Mist-I HATED that ending-how depressing!
I've also got to go with "Identity" as a fun twist.  What a weird take on the whole Agatha Christie "10 people who have never met get together and die mysteriously" plot device.  I also really liked "Mulholland Drive" because the whole thing was incredibly twisty and by the end I felt like my brain had just gone for a turn with an eggbeater - in a good way.
"The Village" gets my vote for worst spoiler.  I found the children's book (that good ol' M. Night still swears he didn't steal it from) to be far more compelling in its delivery.  The movie was just a snore.

"Wild Things" with Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards - 1998

While not a great movie, it is interesting and very suspenseful.  At the end of the movie, when you think you finally know what really happened, you realize you were wrong.  There are two or three totally unexpected twists revealed spread out within the ending credits.  I highly recommend this movie. (There's also a nude scene of Kevin Bacon!)
I guessed the ending of The Prestige and I never usually do that. It seemed so obvious: there is this guy hanging out with Christian Bales' character but they never really show who he is. His wife saying sometimes he appears in love with her, sometimes he doesn't. I still really liked the movie but it was disappointing to me that is was so easy to figure out.
Shawshank Redemption is the best twist ending ever. I didn't even want to see that movie but was sucked in and then the ending is just so satisfying.
No Way Out with Kevin Costner had an interesting twist
Ooh!  Just thought of another - "The Spanish Prisoner."  One of the best con game movies I've ever seen.  You spend the whole film wondering who's involved and who isn't.

(A cool detail to that one is that the work everyone's trying to get their hands on is simply called "The Process," but the film never explains what it is.)
No one I know who's seen "Shattered" with Tom Berenger saw the twist coming.
the Sixth Sense.  once Bruce willis was stabbed, I immediately thought of Jacobs Ladder and knew from that point he was dead.  A complete rip off of a terrible movie, but atleast it was shorter.  Hated them both.
Primal Fear with Ed Norton and Richard Gere has an amazing twist at the end!! The whole movie you think Ed Norton's character is a sweet, retarded boy with multiple personalities and that his violent alter-ego is who killed the priest. Turns out the mild-mannered, sweet boy is just an act!! And he really is a raving lunatic! Ed Norton's acting in this movie is brilliant.
Dressed to Kill, Body Double, What lies Beneath. Watch and enjoy the endings!
I have to agree with Dana, no movie made me start it over faster then "The Game" with Michael Douglas!  I mean the "What in the H3ll!!!" factor at the end of that movie was just insane on so many levels, it is still in my top 10 list to this day!
One of the best movies with an ending that throws you is called Primal Fear with Richard Gere and Ed Norton.  Go rent it because I promise you wont be disappointed.  I still watch this film regularly!
I really liked Primal Fear with Richard Gere and (a young) Edward Norton.  When he revealed at the end that he was not the innocent choir boy, but a cold-blooded killer I was blown away!
No one I know who's seen "Shattered" with Tom Berenger saw the twist coming.
My favorite ending has got to be The Orphanage. Much like the ending of The Mist, I could'nt stop recommending the movie to family and friends.
Dead Again - both a great twist and superb acting.
Memento, The Prestige, Sixth Sense, Planet of the Apes, The Crying Game, and The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, are all good.
(Every M. Night Shyamalan film has a very good look and a twist to it. But, apart from Sixth Sense, they are all awful.)
For any of you that are fans of classics - "Rebecca" is truly the all time best Alfred Hithcock film.  There is a completely unexpected twist in that film that still grips me every time I watch the film.  Fantastic.
"The Game" with Michael Douglas is one of my favorite with a surprise ending.
Arlington Road with Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins....i was flabbergasted....
Kevin Costner's "No Way Out" Still one of my favorites.
"Frailty" and "Memento" both have great twists.  In the former you're thinking, "poor kids to have such a sick father", then of course you find out...in "Memento", you're thinking "poor guy, I hope he finds his wife's killer(s)", then of course you see he's actually...great stuff.
"No Way Out" with Kevin Costner.
"Mulholland Drive" didn't have the classic twist ending, but as events unravel the last 20 - 25 minutes it leaves you dizzy and -- after first viewing -- uncertain of what you've seen. My favorite film of all time.
'Saw'

Greatest cinematic ending in movie history. The antagonist lying down playing dead during the entire movie without a single viewer that realized it let alone the amount of folks who didnt see the red herring but suspecting him as a killer instead(thats what they do afterall). The industry cant come up with many twists as good as that again. Spine-chilling, jaw dropping ending.
Free Willy, now that was a twist ending to never forget.  I thought through the whole movie that the whale would kill the boy, but it didn't. i was so angry, i was outraged.  I must have been mad for a week.
