Shows we want to see on DVD

They were obnoxious, yet they were fascinating. The handsome yuppies of "thirtysomething" are finally coming to DVD. The show went off the air in 1991, yet was hardly ever rerun, and wasn't available for home viewing until now. The first season box set comes out Aug. 25.

Shout Factory

I wasn't even close to "thirtysomething" in age when the show was on, and I remember it made adulthood look kind of frightening. How did these people have the money to own these giant Philadelphia homes, to stay home with their kids, to take risks and start their own companies? Not to mention that everyone seemed to have secrets even from their dearest friends, cheating was rampant, and don't forget all the cancer and death. (Nancy! GARY!)

But the show was still fascinating, and I look forward to watching it now that I've actually passed "thirtysomething" by and have a house and child of my own. It's weird and interesting to watch a show again decades later and relate to it from a completely different place.

This release started me thinking about other shows that haven't been released on DVD, yet should be. Some have rights issues, due to music or other reasons. I'd love the entire 10-year run of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," but know that the movie rights have to be negotiated individually.

Sometimes it's a show that had only a season or two, or not even one whole season, but earned a cult following nonetheless. ("Reunion" and "Close to Home" are on my list here.)

Others have had a couple of seasons issued but then seem to have been dropped -- "Facts of Life" has three seasons out, but that 1980s cheeseball classic really didn't get good until after those three preachy seasons ended. (George Clooney, with a mullet!) And I also have some guilty-pleasure shows I'd like to see again for my own reasons (who else remembers MTV's voyeuristic "Sorority Life" and "Fraternity Life"?)

In the comments on this post about the joys of watching TV on DVD, readers suggested quite a few shows they'd like to get on DVD. Here are some of the shows mentioned.

"'All in the Family' was released by Sony, but they stopped after season 6. FOX released 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and stopped after season 4. The shows I want are hung up by ownership and other legal matters, will probably never make it to DVD or Blu-ray because by the time those legal matters are resolved, most of the fans of those TV shows will have passed away. Too bad, Hollywood, its producers, etc. are so greedy that because of these legal matters, those TV shows will make no income for any of them because they are not on the market."  --Fred

"Sadly, the one TV show I have waited for for nearly a decade just can't seem to get released.  NBC's 'Ed.' I yearn to visit Stuckeyville without my old fuzzy VCR tapes."  --Ellie

"I am waiting -- in vain, I fear -- for the Adam West 'Batman' series from the '60s to hit DVD. That show is one of my greatest childhood TV memories, and I will spare no expense in acquiring it."  --Doug

"How come 'China Beach' has never been released?  One of my all-time favorites and it can't be found. I heard there were issues with the rights to all the incredible music that was played, but come on.  Someone get on the ball and put that wonderful show on DVD."  --Trace

"Now if they would just release the final season of the unfortunately cancelled 'Life' starring Damian Lewis and included a final episode that I would entitle WHO DONE IT? to solve the conspiracy I would be the very first in line to buy."  --Liz

Throw out some more in the comments, and maybe the studios will pay attention.

NYPD Blue only has 4 seasons out...they really need to finish up...also the remaining season of St. Elsewhere and Family (only one season exists for each)
I'd love to re-watch Sisters with Sela Ward.
I would LOVE to see the release of the rest of Night Court!! WB begrudgingly released a Season Two this year, with no other plans to release the rest. This makes me sad! Get with it, WB!! Herman's Head would be a great one to see released, as well more than just a 'best of' Rowan and Martin's Laugh In. None of the above are in syndication in my area and I'd love to see them again!
FYI: The second season of the series Life IS being released on DVD. The release date is August 25.
Whose line is it anyway? Ryan Stiles-0, neon light-1

WKRP-but I think due to licensing, they can't.
I want the Disney Channel original "Even Stevens" on DVD!
The Wonder Years.
Great show - why has it never been put on DVD?
Word to 'China Beach' needing to be released on DVD.  That show was so amazing.  I'd also love if 'Due South' were released on DVD.  That show was fun and quirky and Paul Gross is just hot, hot, hot.
The MTV sock puppet masterpiece that was "Sifl & Olly" would be totally crescent fresh on DVD! What's the hold up, MTV!

Also, the short-lived and funnier than Will & Grace (that season, anyway) Jason Bateman series "Some of My Best Friends" based on the movie "Kiss Me, Guido", would do great on DVD because the gays would snatch it up.
I too am axiously awaiting the 'Batman' series from the '60s. It was campy, funny, corney, over-the top and just a lot of fun. Everyone remembers Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman, and probably the folks who played them, but do you remember the villians portrayed by Joan Collins, Milton Berle, Roddy McDowell, Shelly Winters, Vincent Price and many, many others, along with the cameo appearances of folks that popped out the windows when Batman and Robin clinbed the buildings. Please release this classic of '60s television.
I would like to see a DVD of the old Fox series "Strange Luck", which was one of the few series ever aired that actually assumed that the viewer was intelligent and willing to apply that ability while watching. Naturally, the talent seems to be missing in network executives in charge of such things, thus it was cancelled.
I was just thinking this morning about how I would love to see "Boston Public" come out on DVD. I know it kind of went downhill in the last few seasons but it was awesome when it started :)
How about LA Law??
Barney Miller!!!
I'd love to see Sisters on DVD. That was a great show.
China Beach Please.  One of my all time favorite shows.
Has Picket Fences or Northern Exposure ever been memorialized properly on DVD?
I want to see the rest of Third Watch. There are only 2 seasons out on DVD (that I'm aware of). Where are the other 4? What a great show!
What about Scarecrow & Mrs. King...I've been waiting forever for that one!
How about Ally McBeal, WKRP in Cincinatti and the second season of Here Come the Brides?
I keep hoping for The Wonder Years and The Chris Isaak Show. Both really different from each other, but also great shows!
The Wonder Years.
I would love to see the BBC/PBS series Tenko on DVD. This was an amazing and griping depiction of life for British women in a Japanese POW camp during WWII. I remember watching it on PBS in the 80's. I was only a young teen at the time but the unfolding story held me enthralled. It's available on DVD but in Region 2 format only so it won't play on American DVD players. I've even asked the BBC if it will be available for Region 1 players but no answer as yet.
Back in the mid 90's there was a show on ABC called 'High Incident', it was a great cop drama.  It had David Keith and Cole Hauser. I think it only lasted one or two seasons. I was telling my husband about it, and he didn't remember it.  I looked for it on Netflix, but couldn't find it.  I would love to see it and share it with him.
Small Wonder!!!!
The rest of Hill Street Blues!!!!
I have a DVD set from NBC's "Providence", I series I absolutely loved, but it's only "favorite" episodes, 14 of them I think.  Wish they would've released the whole series.  "Ed" definitely, great show, launched careers for Justin Long and Ginnefer Goodwin!  "American Dreams" was another favorite show, and they only released season one, and ended it's run abruptly.  Why does that happen with good shows, which the whole family can watch without parents cringing?  I'll never understand that!!
Ed is a great suggestion, I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Same goes for Chicago Hope.
Hex was a great show that aired on BBC America.  The first season was released on DVD but not the 2nd season and the BBC never plays the re-runs. What I find amazing is the 2nd season has been released in other regions but not the USA.  That doesn't make sense at all!  How about releasing the entire series?
They've released fifteen, maybe sixteen volumes of MST3K on DVD (each set comes with four of the movies) so they're slowly slowly slowly getting them out there, thank God.  In the meantime, I get my MST3K fix through Rifftrax.  Keep rooting for MST3K everybody; we need the laughter nowadays!

I also have to echo the "Whose Line Is It Anyway" vote, except I'd like to add in the British run of the show as well, as many of the comedians migrated from one to the other anyway and this way you get a better fix of Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie.
I would love to see "Push, NV" on DVD. I am not even sure that they finished filming the season before it got canceled, but this was a very smart show and really drew you in. I can't believe, even with the possibility of winning $1 millon, that this show was not more well recieved.
I hate seeing intelectual shows canceled because they do not apeal to the lowest common denominator. Thanks "Joe Six Pack", I really hated seeing shows like "Push" and "Kings". Now I can fill my time with "Wipeout" and "Hole in the Wall". WOOT!
John Doe, it was a great show on fox that had a great cliff hanger at the end of season one but then there was no season two so I'm still left without closure to this day.
I would like to add The Parkers to your list. Very Funny program, at least I thought so.
I would like to see the original GI Joe and Transformers series.  Loved these as a kid.  And Voltron.
The first season of WKRP is available, but most of the original music has been changed, due to rights issues. Hopefully they'll have the rest out soon.
The Wonder Years. I've heard the reason why it hasn't been released to DVD is due to the cost of securing the music rights.
I heard they want to release Wonder Years but are having a difficult time due to all the music they used in the show.  Permission problems.  I loved Life with Bonnie.  It was only on for 2 seasons but was such a funny show!
Life Goes On
I love "Whose Line Is It Anyway". Wayne Brady is an improv genius.  What I really want is "The Carol Burnett Show" on DVD.  I used to watch it everyday after school.  So funny...
i would love ABC's Homefront, a WWII drama from the early 90s i think.  it featured a young kyle chandler. yum.
Max Headroom, so I can finally understand what my hubby means when he calls himself a "blip." And "It's Your Move" with a teenaged Jason Bateman. I'm sure it's horribly dated by now, but I loved that show!
Wonder Years is hung up because of music rights.  Northern Exposure was completely released, but because of the music rights issue, a lot of the incidental tunes were replaced for the DVDs.
WKRP is a classic and I would buy it in a heartbeat... but I understand the music rights stand in the way.
I would love to see Judging Amy out of DVD.  It was a great show that ended way too soon.
Ned and Stacey (Season Two).  It would also be nice to see Ed, Boston Common, Two Guys and a Girl (and sometimes a Pizza Place), Herman's Head, Doctor Doctor, Norm, Simon (speaking of a young Jason Bateman), The Fugitive (2000), and I really hope they continue releasing Newhart (not stopping mid-run as was done for The Bob Newhart Show).  Really though, I'd be happy with just Ned and Stacey Season Two.
I'm anxious for "Young Hercules" to come to DVD.  Sure it was a kids show from 1998-1999 that only so many watched, but it has marketability now thanks to Ryan Gosling's rising star presence.  There certainly aren't a lot of young kids from TV in the last decade who can claim to be an Oscar nominee.
Please please please .. Midnight Caller.
"Goodnight America, wherever you are".
Judging Amy.

Tyne Daly & Amy Brenneman were on their A game, and it was fantastic.
I'd love to see caroline in the city.  I missed some of the the finale!!!
WHERE IN GOD'S NAME ARE THE REST OF THE SEASONS OF AARON SPELLING'S "FAMILY?"..a pristine quality show passed by over PURE JUNK!
