It's a dog's life: Animals in ads

Animal ads are always a popular topic of discussion in our commercial contest. The right cute pooch or cuddly kitten can sell a product, or at least give you warm fuzzy feelings about a brand name, and advertisers know it.

Animal ads have won the best ad honor in our contest twice. The California Cows won in 2006, and in 2007, the title went to a bulldog who gave his favorite toy to a puppy and trooped off to PetSmart for a replacement.

This poor dog just can't rest until he knows his bone is safe. Do they actually offer insurance for bones?

Just last week, when I posted votes for some of the popular best and worst ad contenders, a small revolt started in the comments. People started a campaign for the Traveler's Insurance ad, in which a small dog worries and tries to protect his precious bone, eventually feeling safe once it's under the Traveler's umbrella. I've still never seen this commercial on TV, but I quickly found it on YouTube, and I agree -- it's a contender. Although it makes me feel a little bad that the dog is so distressed. The catchy, sweet song is "Trouble," by Maine folksinger Ray LaMontagne, and someone on YouTube points out that the city the dog is roaming around is San Francisco. It's a cute ad, but can it beat Ozzy Osbourne needing his phone to both translate for him, and find a bathroom in his own house?

These are not technically commercials, but animals in PSAs for organizations such as the ASPCA always break my heart. Here's one where a cat demonstrates that however hard he tries, he just can't speak out against animal cruelty without human help. Singer Sarah McLachlan makes an eloquent voice for abused animals in this ad (this YouTube version is tagged for Canada, but it's the same ad I've seen here in the U.S.)

I also get a kick out of this commercial for Pledge Fabric Sweeper, even though I'm not quite sure what that is. I just like to watch the dozen or so all-black cats mill around a white sofa.

I've written before about how I'm a sucker for any ad with the Budweiser Clydesdales, especially their poignant 9-11 tribute. And while I know it's too old to be eligible this year, my second-favorite Clydesdale ad has to be "Naw, they usually go for two." Although I was reminded of our misheard lyrics discussions when I read in the YouTube comments that someone thought the line was "No, they use the gophers, too."

Which animal ads are your favorites? Or do you feel animals shouldn't be used in commercials at all? Share your thoughts in the comments.

My new favorite it the Cesar dog food commercial with the big dogs who want to be little dogs.  There's a Great Dane who wants to ride in a bike basket, an English sheepdog trying to climb into a purse, and a Great Pyrenees who thinks he's a lap dog.  It makes me smile every time!
This one is pretty old but there was an ad for Firskies kitten food and this little kitten is zooming all over the house like a whirlwind. Always bought a giggle.
The Traveler's Insurance Dog ad is the absolute best ad on ALL of TV that I've seen since the Tacco Bell
little dog ad.
Yes, animals should be in ads.  I always pay attention to them when they are.  I even recorded the Traveler's "Trouble" ad for safe keeping.
Four words:  Ferret with a chainsaw.
My vote for the worst ad--There was a sandwich shop ad (Quiznos?) which indicated that the person was so obsessed over eating his sandwiches that he neglected everything, including his birds which were dead in their cage.  This ad greatly upset my daughter who has birds, and thus, she'll never eat at the place again.  Thankfully, it only aired a few times, but the effect was about the biggest turnoff for my family.
One of my all-time favorite animal ads was the Accenture one featuring cowboys herding cats.  I haven't seen it in a while but it was a classic!  And while we're talking about the Budweiser Clydesdales, does anyone remember the sweet one of the pony dreaming of being a big horse -- he puts on the harness and is thrilled to pull the big wagon, oblivious to the fact that it is being pushed from behind by a grown Clydesdale?  Love it!  And yes, those ASPCA ones have brought tears to my eyes and made me glad to donate.  Good work folks!
I love the Cottonelle bath tissue ad with the labrador puppy getting pampered at the luxury spa.  When he's laying up in that jacuzzi with his eyes closed I crack up!  Now they have one where he's working in an aesthetics lab, but I've only seen it air one time.
I love all animal commercials. The Travelers one was cute. They are the only ones that make sense. At least you don't have to hear some stupid people talk, like in Cialis. They one I dislike the most besides Cialis is Progressive's Flo. I put her on mute.
There is no problem with animals being used in ads.  Animals can work for a living like the rest of us.  In fact, wild animals work very hard, 24/7, for food and shelter.  Animal actors, in this day of enlightened training methods, have a good job.
Whoops, my bad--the cowboys herding cats ad is actually for EDS, not Accenture.  I guess I was loving the cats so much I missed the sponsor's name at the end!  Check it out on YouTube--the cowboys sneezing and using a lint roller are hilarious!
Gotta be the ads for Cottonelle toilet paper!!
My favorite commercial is still the Budweiser tribute to 9-11; it still brings tears to my eyes.  But another series of commercials I dearly love is the Pedigree commercials featuring dachshunds.  They're great!
i think they are refreshing and they beat the heck out of people ads where half the time we don't even know what they are trying to sell. also, not every viewer is a male so stop trying to sell everything with sex.
I just can't resist that little Cottenelle puppy... Especially the new one in his little lab coat... Although I am pretty much a sucker for any puppy/dog commercial and always had a soft spot for the Clydesdales...
One of my favorite animal ads this year is for Dawn soap, where animals who have been caught in an oil spill are being cleaned using the "tough but gentle" soap. The animals are adorable, and the ad always leaves me with a warm-fuzzy feeling.
The Cottonelle commerical is the best! And where is the AFLACK DUCK? I have not seen him for awhile! The pet commericals the best!
My favorite all time animal commercial is still the one of the "weiner dog" and his stuffed "weiner dog" toy that he took everywhere with him. I love that commercial!
But the PSA commercials for animal abuse and adoption tear me to pieces.
One of the best is the Travelers ad, but another priceless one is of the little dog trying to make his larger dog friend happy. He brings him soccer ball and all sorts of doggy items only to still have the friend moping around. Finally, the little guy digs up a huge bone and gives it to the pal. And he is happy! It is so cute!
I like the one for Dawn soap, though it also makes me very sad.
My favorite animal commercial is older but some of you may remember it. Its for a dog food and an irish setter tries going up the steps as a puppy, it's little girl owner calle "here casey!" You see the two grow together and when the girl is a young adult she is calling casey and casey is not old and barely able to make it. It makes me cry, but I've always loved this commercial. Yes, animals who are treated humanely should be in ALL commercials LOL!
My all time favorite is still the Sprint 200 oxen/10,000 dachshunds commercial.  They have two of the wiener dogs in a yoke trying to pull a wagon and someone throws  a lasso around another one.  At the end, "STAMPEDE!"
It is so worth checking out on  YouTube.
My favorite recent commercial is the Armstrong Floor ad with the skate boarding bulldog.  "Take it outside, Charlie."
The one that gets me is the Pedigree ad with the dog in the shelter with the voiceover (David Duchovny?) saying "I know how to sit, and how to play catch. What I don't know is how I ended up in here. But I know that I'm a good dog, and I just want to go home." I got teary just typing that!
Stephanie I'm giggling like a fool..You have a warped sense of humor - I like it.
The animal ads are THE VERY BEST!  My very favorite - the Traveler's ad and I watch it everytime it is aired.
I can't remember what the ad was for- it's been a while- but does anyone else remember the long-haired, gray cat sitting on a staircase who sneezes and loses most of his fur? I laughed so hard I cried the first time I saw it- and sitting here now I'm giggling at the mental image.
Remember the Polaroid camera ad with the woman scolding the dog for knocking over the trash and making a mess. Next you see the dog after looking a the kitchen knife for revenge gets the camera to get a picture of the cat in the trash can making the mess.
Oh my gosh yes. I agree that humanely treated animals should be in commercials.  They are so much more tolerable than the human type....My Mom is crazy about the Geico gecko...I love the oldie but goody where the cat is at the computer changing the vet appointment on the owners calender to say "Take dog to vet", and then you see the dog up there changing it back to say "Take the cat to vet" and it goes back and forth.  Hilarious!
I have always loved the AFLACK duck and the Clydesdale horse commercials. This year I especially like the SPDR commercial featuring the dog who is trying to cheer up his friend.
On previous comment I forgot to include the commercials for the ASPC by Sarah McLaughlin.  Love the songs and cry every time I see them.
Companion animals who will be cared for evermore, no matter what, are acceptable.  Chimps, who quickly outgrow their "usefulness" as they mature/become aggressive, should be left to live as naturally as possible.
I agree with the others about the Cottonelle commercial with the lab puppy getting pampered.  Gotta' love the "puppy dog" eyes. Cracks me up every time!
I absolutely love the AFLAC commercial with the goat ... "Nah nah nah" as he shakes his head and eats the paper in the office.  My boyfriend thought I was insane but that ad always makes me laugh hysterically
i love all ads with animals in them, and the new travelers insurance is one of my favs!
This one will take you back a few years.....Does anyone remember the ad campaign for a pizza chain (Little Cesars, I think) that featured the two bulldogs meeting, then getting married (whole canine wedding party outfitted to the nines), then going to marriage counseling?  That series is still my all-time favorite!
There's a cute one running all the time on CNBC right now where one dog keeps trying to make another dog happy.  It's for some investing service but I've never paid enough attention to figure out which one.
The Budweiser frogs!!
Remember the hound dog(blu-tic coon dog)driving the old Ford truck and his passenger/owner saying,"no ducks,no,not the ducks..."as the dog veers the truck off the road to chase the ducks and goes airborne into a pond? Classic.
I love the Pedigree commerical with Oliver. I cry everytime, he's so cute!
Gonna go way back for this one, the Coke tv ad with the 12 lab (golden retriever?) puppies overwhelming a giggly toddler who just starts laughing.  If you can find it, it will make you smile.
These are all such heartwarming ads that I truly do love but my very favorite animal ad of all time is the Vigorsol:The Legend. You can see it at veryfunnyads.com on page 14. Sophomoric humor BUT the squirrel saves the day!
I love the Traveler's Insurance ad, and like Laurah in the first comment, I also love the one where big dogs are trying to act like they were little, which as big-dog owners know is such a truism.

Another ad I've always enjoyed is the Beggin' Strips bacon-flavored dog treat ad where you just see the nose of a "dog" as it scrambles around its house to find the source of the bacon smell.  "Only one thing smells like bacon and that's BACON!!!"  It captures dogs' enthusiasm so well.
Some of my favorite ads (because of the message), yet also some of the saddest are the Pedigree "how did I get here?" commercials. They depict a dog in a kennel at Animal Control (the dog pound) wondering what he did wrong to end up in doggy prison. It's a sad reality check that brings me to full on sobbing every time without fail. Great message though - ADOPT SHELTER DOGS.
Any of the Pedigree commercials (I love the new one about the "Optimum Pooper") are great along with the big dogs being little dogs.  I just hug my kitties every time the ASPCA commercials come on but I can't watch them or I cry.  Clydesdales are awesome too.
I, too, agree that the animal ads are the BEST.  I'll bet those animals are a lot better to work with than humans.  Bet there are a lot less "takes"!!!!
Sunny in Columbus It was golden retriever puppies but it was for Pepsi...that has always been one of my all tme favorite...
Favorite animal commercial of all time: the Great Dane who hypnotizes his owner into driving around at night picking up all his dog friends. Then, to the tune of "Low Rider", the dogs abandon the human and go cruisin'.
Budwieser frogs for sure! THe damaltion and the cyldesdale fetching sticks. And Sarah's ad, makes me cry. The AFLAC duck pumping up Carl Edwards tires (NASCAR) for a cruise around town to meet girls!!! Hilarious. Carl says "great idea".
There is a commercial for an investing service called Spydr that has a terrier mix and a golden chow mix, both dogs are mutts and they remind me so much of my dogs that when I am out of town and see the commercial I actually start crying.  Even when I am watching something I DVR'ed I will still watch this commerical, that's how cute it is...
my new favorite is the ferret with the chainsaw.  the first time i saw it i lmao for five minutes, falling from the couch to the floor!!  it aired right after an ad for some scary movie, and i was anticipating another fierce, hideous creature.....then it's the ferret.  HE-larious!!
