'This Is It'? Not for me

On Oct. 30, oddly enough just in time for Halloween, Sony Pictures will release “Michael Jackson This Is It.” People will line up and pay their $10 to take a look at Jackson’s final performance rehearsals before his death. For me, this prospect is cringe worthy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Jackson fan from way back. My mom has a picture of me as a kid, excitedly holding up a copy of “Off the Wall” that I’d received as a gift. But this film release stinks of exploitation; just another way to keep money rolling into the estate.

Michael Jackson in his final rehearsals.

Perhaps to some, it feels like a way to celebrate a great entertainer. But if so, why not just air it on television? Why charge admission? The fact that organizers charged for refreshments at the public memorial in Los Angeles already seemed like a bad idea. I don’t remember paying for a Pepsi at my grandfather’s funeral.

And will people even be attending the movie to glimpse his talent? Or will it be to see if they can sense his impending death somewhere in those dance moves. Upon learning this week that the L.A. coroner considers Jackson’s death a homicide, we also learned the singer had bed sores. It’s hard not to be curious how someone can go from strenuous concert rehearsals to bed sores. Will we be looking for evidence of the “King of Pop's” decline?

I realize that the Jackson estate has debts and that his children will most likely be the main beneficiaries of the estate’s gains, but it just feels way too soon for this film release.

On last week’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Maher made a joke about the postponement of Jackson’s burial, saying, in effect, that Jackson was about to become the zombie he pretended to be in “Thriller.” When I get a notice for this film’s release that’s what I think of: A lifeless puppet going through the motions on stage for our amusement.

I, for one, don’t plan to buy a ticket. Instead, maybe I’ll dig out my old copy of “Off the Wall.” Now I just need to find a record player.

I agree that the movie should be on TV. It should be free to watch, not on a pay per view channel. I would like to see the new dance moves Michael was going to do in the concert series. I don't know that I'll buy a ticket, doubtful since it's only going to be a 2 week run. Hopefully I'll be able to watch it in another venue.
I won't be attending either, Paige.  I think it will hurt too much to watch someone who was in this much pain, emotionally and physically.  We will never really know what Michael Jackson endured his entire lifetime to cause some of his behavior, but it must have been something that hurt to the core.  You are right, this borders on some sickness in our own society that we want to watch him "go through the motions" and for who?  I have mourned and grieved over his death and would like to move onto the celebration of his life and the many, many contributions he made to music, dance and to charities...and then I pray he really is in a better place and I pray for those children...that we will "leave them alone." As an aside, I really wish people would refrain from the jokes (have to admit I did not hear or read Mr. Maher's entire joke)...instead, direct them at the people now making the decisions and to those that used him until he was all used up.  Of course, Michael had his faults, but it is too soon for me to hear crude jokes when he has no control over what is happening to his physical body.
I completely agree it is exploitative. If it must be sold, do it by DVD
Frankly I think those on Television have already exploited this beyond belief. TVGuide Channel shows programming related to MJ almost continuously. Its sickening.
I have to agree--Michael Jackson was horribly exploited in life and it continues after his death.  Of course, I would love to see This Is It, just for one last look at his dancing--there are bound to be moves we haven't seen before.  But the thought of lining the pockets of those who turned a blind eye to his drug use and misery will keep me away.
Hooray for Hollywood!
Michael Jackson was an extremely talented individual, and met a tragic ending to a sometime bizarre existence.  He has been dead for 2 months now. Although I feel bad for his family, I think enough is enough already, I dont need constant updates on who is being accused of what in his death, where his family is going, because honestly except for Janet & his mother, everyone else is in this for money and hopes to travel on his coat tails... Many famous people meet tragic ends, & yes he was an icon... but enough is enough already... I wouldnt pay to see the movie, I wouldnt even watch it for free... I am so overloaded with news on him that I just dont care anymore...
As soon as I heard that Michael had died, one of the first things I thought (and I'm sad to say this)was "Here we go." It's going to be Elvis, it's going to be Anna Nicole, it's going to be Marilyn Monroe, it's going to be James Brown...all over again. In this day and age, EVERYTHING is entertainment. The media wants to package everything they can get their hands on...and sell it. They know how much people like Elvis and Jimi Hendrix continue to pull in as far as music sales and, as in the case of Elvis, Graceland tour tickets. And they want to be the first in line to capitalize on one of the biggest entertainers of all time...Michael Jackson.
I think it is a good thing that a movie was made. But I also think it would have been in better taste to release it, say, a year or two from now. THE MAN JUST DIED! And already we are getting a movie about his final days?! It's almost as if they (the media, entertainment companies, etc.) are trying to get as much money upfront as possible from this tragedy. I agree with one of the comments above: they have driven this thing into the ground. I like Michael, I really enjoyed his music. Now, just give me (and the rest of us) a break, to deal with his loss in our own way. Cramming information down our throats constantly is only leaving a sour taste in our mouths. Even die-hard, died-in-the-wool fans have got to be saying "Come on now! Give me a break!"
I've read that the reason the movie is only showing for a limited run is so that the estate can release it to DVD in time for the Christmas shopping season. So they'll create demand and drive up sales with a "limited run" and then release the movie to DVD a few weeks later and earn even more cash. Will his kids see any of this money??
Likely if the film was going to be broadcast on TV, it'd end up on VH1, or MTV where only fans with cable would get to see it. I think even though they're charging the price of a movie ticket, it makes it more accessible for his fans. Furthermore, those that don't have TiVo or DVR can see it at their convinence.
who really cares ... .The Jackson family has the right to do ANYTHING with the footage they want .. Some half baked columnist wringing their hands over such a non issue is the real issue ... Find something real to write about
Lori, according to the agreement approved by the judge, Michael Jackson's estate will get 90% of the profits.  Of that, his children will receive 40%, his mother will receive another 40% and the remaining 20% will go to various charities as specified in his will.
GREED-EXPLOYTATION is free running, and is allowed. This is exactly what was going on throughout Jackson’s life; everyone wants money from him – STILL DO – even in death…. No peace!  True fans should boycott such a “cold” money play movie. I do understand that Sony and others want their money, and rightly so, but squeezing money out of the dead now is beyond humane especially in such poor taste-rushed!  No love in that.  Jackson gave and gave, and the overwhelming majority raped in return.  When I saw the last rehearsal clip not knowing it was recent, nor his last, in 3 seconds knew he was ill.  No prior knowledge, or of illness – It was clear that this was not the same Jackson;  I actually thought it was an impersonator.  Clearly his life was eccentric, and he has mistakes just like anyone would.  His innocent kids who are watching everything and are likely to be center stage now.  True fans – I encourage you not to join in with the rape of his children, their childhood, which Michael worked so hard to protect is now grossly being exploited, violated beyond reason.  The media feeds what people ask for and what sells– even when unethical.
Be the change you want to see in this world – it starts with one!

Once it becomes a $1 video (if ever)I may rent it. But for now I have no interest in seeing it.  I think it's sad that like Elvis he's become the new money maker for the greedy left behind; including memebers of his own family!
I think its more for fans that were true and for the younger generations kids who nvr got too c him live
As for ppl who r lookin for a mistake is sick its different to judge him and b a fair weather than to b a person who didnt really know all that he did and thats for them
I think u not wanting to pay is selfish
If u dont want to pay ten the dont go to imax.....those movies are $20 and thats for any movie
It would b different if it was like 30 or 40 dollars
I think ur makin this into somthing its not
God bless the family
I agree with everyone here.. In my head I know that the people in Hollywood are trying to make money from people like me, who are devastated over his loss and just want any part of him that we can hold on to, but thats the problem I have. In my heart, I really just want any part of him that I can hold on to. It was one of my biggest dreams to see him in concert and unfortunately this will be the closest that I can get to realizing that dream. The day he died was the worse day of my life. This whole thing has been so hard and so draining, that any joy I can get I, and many other fans, would love to just hang on to. Dont know whether I will follow my head or my heart, but probably my heart
Actually, the last 3 funnerals I attended I payed for my Pepsi, every funneral home has a kitchen with a coke machine.  Just saying......
I'm as sick as everyone else about the tabloid headlines distributed by the media. However, I would have loved to see the "This Is It" concert. From the clips, it looks like Michael was having a great time and performing well. I guess it could be a little morbid, but I'm eager to see his last 'harrah.' The money-grubbers would find a way, anyway, so why not enjoy Michael's talent one more time?
I have been a fan of MJ's for most of my life and I wouldn't miss seeing "This Is It" for the world. I feel it was his triumph...though not 100% yet...but no matter what else was going on in his life, when he was onstage he was COMPLETE. For as long as I am watching the movie on the big screen, I will suspend any cynicism about the human condition. I will see Michael's joy of performance, and know that at least for a while, to quote Maya Angelou, WE HAD HIM.
That was written just perfectly ! As they said the day after he died: he is worth more dead than alive.
Very sad that the family could have not waited a little longer. Gheesh, the guy is not even buried yet !!!!
OK, everyone, let's take a deep breath.  The last two months have been hard on those who love Michael.  Yes, his talent and his life will continue to be exploited after death.  It is what it is.  For those who don't want to be exposed to the news, tributes, blogs, books, magazines, TV programs, then DON'T watch/listen.  For those who want to know what is evolving in all areas of Michael's legacy, then that information is available on a daily update.  I personally will go see the movie, because I want to be in an environment where I can share my love/grief with other people who love Michael.  We haven't had a chance to do that yet.
It's all about the money.......AND WHAT'S NEW?
I think it should be released on DVD, it is a documentary about his final rehearsal, why shouldn't we have to pay to see what most people had paid to see at a concert.
