ABOUT TEST PATTERN

Don't touch that dial: Test Pattern tunes into television, movie, music and pop culture links, as well as gossip and idle chat from around the Web.

Every week, msnbc.com entertainment producers Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, Denise Hazlick, Paige Newman, Kurt Schlosser and Anna Chan weigh in on topics ranging from TV commercials to movie hype to the latest celebrity blunder. We're not ashamed to admit our love for bad TV or reveal what's on our iPods, and invite you to join the conversation via your comments.

Test Pattern goes off the air

Posted: Monday, September 14, 2009 6:00 AM by Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Since a test pattern is what television sets used to show after the programs have faded to black, what happens when a test pattern itself fades to black?

That's too complicated for this bear of very little brain to process, but it's one way to say that this Entertainment blog, Test Pattern, is shutting down after today. I began the blog solo in 2003, and it turned into a group effort in 2008.

The toenail monster: Test Pattern's unofficial, and super-creepy, mascot.

Highlights of the Test Pattern days for me included the annual TV commercial contest, which began in 2004 and ran every summer, with the most recent one just concluding a week ago. If when you think of creepy toenail monsters you think of msnbc.com, well, my work is done, but your sleep will be severely disturbed.

We also had a great time dishing on misheard lyrics ("Help me Rhonda, help me get a ride on my horse!"), trying to define Steve Miller's "pompatus of love," and highlighting a lot of fun time-wasting sites in Multi-link Monday. We unwrapped our favorite holiday specials (Heat Miser!), shared the scariest movie linesresurrected dead TV characters, quoted John Hughes and mourned "My Name Is Earl."

We made things up: The Rod Stewart Rule involved musical artists who cannot be played in your car, and The Klaputis refers to that one episode of a popular TV show that you somehow missed ever seeing.

I wasn't the only msnbc.com editor who kept the blog hopping. Anna Chan shared her confessions of a band girlfriend and mourned Nine Inch Nails. Paige Newman joined "True Blood's" Team Eric and praised Meryl Streep. Denise Hazlick dissed the "Sex and the City" movie and raved about Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory." Kurt Schlosser mourned both Paul Newman and his own carefree, childless moviegoing days.

And, in the end, we were outlasted by Samantha Harris.

We'll still find ways to give you a chance to have your say on msnbc.com. Our community site, Newsvine, features moderated discussions of issues including entertainment, and also lets you weigh in via votes. You'll see more and more Newsvine links popping up in our stories. And our staff isn't going away, we'll still be here, just spending our time on other things. And other msnbc.com blogs, including Alan Boyle's Cosmic Log, will continue to publish. Self-plug: If you're a fan of pop-culture Weblogs, I run one called Pop Culture Junk Mail and would love to see you there.

I've been blogging since 1999, and without reader reaction and comments, it's kind of like talking to yourself in the mirror. You made the blog fun and carried it for six years. Thanks for that, and don't touch that dial. This blog may be going off the air, but the show goes on.

First "Clicked" goes dark, and now this?  I'm running out of reasons to visit MSNBC.com.
I don't understand........Why?
Really enjoyed this column over the years.  Best wishes for future endeavors.
Bummer :(
Gael - I have really enjoyed your blog for years it was definitely appointment reading when I saw there was a Test Pattern update... lol which made your maternity leave a very slow period for intelligent pop culture reading during my breaks.  Thanks so much for your insight and I will definitely continue checking your PCJM site.
Dang. *heavy sigh* One less bright spot in the day. Thanks for everything!
I'll definitely miss Test Pattern, but I'll check out your other blog. Thanks for giving us so many things to think and talk about over the years! :)
Sorry to see "Test Pattern" go. I have always enjoyed the articles and found myself talking to the columnists in my head.  We have had lively debates through the years and I will miss them.  Gael, I have been a fan of yours on PCJM for a long time and will continue to be a loyal follower.  Keep up the good work!
Gael & Crew --- You will be sorely missed.  Thank you for bringing laughter (and occasionally groans) to my work days.  Best of luck in the future!
It's been fun. Your blog will be missed. Go in peace and safe in the knowledge, you made this reader smile every time. Wishing you much success in your next venture.
Gael! So sorry to see Test Pattern go. You did a fantastic job with Test Pattern - it was always one of my favorite ways to creatively use up work time. Multi-link Mondays will always rule.
what kind of idiot decided this should close?
I'm sure I speak for all when I say "NOOOOOOO!" Dang it, when I wrote in Minnesotan, I'm sure you understood me, you betcha!
Good.
This was one of my favorite blogs and I will be sad to see it go. Big loss for MSNBC.com.
LAME
I just started reading this blog. Does anyone realize how much fun this was and how nice it was to be able to discuss TV and not sound like an idiot for it? I am surprised that another person or group didn't decide to take it over. Sad, really...
OH NO! I will miss you.
HUH?  Nooooooooo.  I love Test Pattern and am sorry to see it go.  grrr.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I love Test Pattern!!!!!!!
Test Pattern will be missed, but we'll see you on PCJM!
Sorry to see Test Pattern go (just like real life test patterns in this age of 24/7 TV).  You will be missed.
This sucks...Test Pattern was my favorite part of each day, checking on what other people had to say, I will check out your other blog but I really enjoyed this one... Good Luck to you and the rest of the Test Pattern crew, you guys were the main reason I tuned into MSNBC...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Say it isn't so!
Test Pattern was one of my daily morning visits as I sipped on my first cup of Java.  Arrgh!!!  Why is it that GREAT things like this are removed from the web while so much JUNK is added daily?  Of course I'll continue checking out PCJM, but will really miss this venue for relaying my opinion while reading others'.  It was nice to have a largely civil discussion on subjects here.  For all of the excellent writing from you and your collegues - Thank you.
I'm done crying now. I've always thought of Test Pattern as "smart people talking about stupid stuff". It was the place we could come to to discuss pop nonsense without any guilt.
What? This is out of no where! No more Multi-Link Mondays? That has been the bright spot in my Monday for years now. :(
I'm very sorry to see Test Pattern go. Gael, we'll see you over at PCJM.
ring, ring Hello, FOXNews? I'm calling to tell you that I'm dumping my current Home Page and am looking for a new one. With the removal of my reason for going to my current Home Page being cancelled, I need a new Home Page. I'll be over in a minute. Thanks FOXNews and THANK-YOU, MSNBC!!
Unfortunate but not a surprise. The end of Test Pattern was on the horizon when the blog was opened up to other writers. Too many cooks in the kitchen. I'll continue to miss Multi Link Mondays the most.
Bummer.  I follow PCJM some but have to say Test Pattern was my favorite.  My soap (Guiding Light) goes off the air this week as well.  Man--I didn't think it could get any worse.
boo!!! i'll miss you!!!!

and yes, at my brother's birthday party last weekend, i was the only one able to identify digger the dermatophyte by name. your work is indeed done.
Scarecrow, I'll miss you the most.  Thanks, TP, for bringing some light and mirth to our world. I always looked forward to new posts.
RATS!  Why does all the good stuff get snuffed?
I will definitely miss the many lol moments I got from Test Pattern.
Well damn. I guess I'll just have to get my daily dose of Gael over at PCJM. Thanks for the memories!
My strangest memory of TV dates back to the 1950's. CBS used to air a soap called "The Edge of Night". It was built around a small-town prosecutor and his friends and colleagues. The premiere week, the producers killed off the DA's wife. Viewers were so disappointed at what appeared to be a real-life twist to the plot so early on, that they flooded the eye web's switchboards with frantic phone calls. The day after all of that, the lead actor and the actress who played his wife(albeit briefly), had to appear live at the end of the day's episode to explain that the actress had gone on to other projects and had not really been killed. With "Test Pattern" disappearing, much like, say, "Sermonette" or the nightly religious talk(about 5 minutes before a station would sign off for the day, followed by the national anthem in the early days of the medium), where will we be able to keep up with TV?
But why? Couldn't you have just turned the site over to a bunch of college kids and told them to have a go at it (in exchange for 3% of any advertising revenues)? Come on! I'm going to miss Test Pattern!
We can all look forward to "Test Pattern Classic" when it returns.
to ms "anna chan from her bedroom on 9/14"  - why would you say, "good"? are you a bear of very feeble brain?
OMG-just found this site; good stuff goes fast and the crap drags on and on.....Hope followers find other venues, their testaments tell of the impact in their daily lives.  Wishing the best for All of you!
I really enjoyed the blog, sorry to hear it's gone. :(
At least you got to announce your end, unlike the Whiner of the Week blog that unceremoniously disappeared altogether...not even any links to past WOW winners/losers.  Good luck to you!
Bill, do my feeble brain and I really need to explain to you what sarcasm is?

Everyone else - please do not go through life taking all things so seriously.  Try to take at least one moment each and every day to laugh.  It will do you good.  It is sad that such things are lost on so many.

Back to you, Bill - this is now the time to emphasize my point by making another reply about being offended and/or questioning how someone can be so rude.
Too bad! The test pattern would have filled in very nicely for Glenn Beck.
I agree with some of the other replies.  Without Test Pattern and Clicked why bother to go to MSNBC?  I will really miss Gael and all the rest of you.  I will try Pop Culture Junk Mail!

Ron
I agree with Steve S. from Springfield - first Clicked and now Test Pattern???
(Although I honestly don't get what's going on with Clicked.  It's not like they've taken down the site - they just removed the link.  I know 'cause I still have the Clicked page bookmarked....)
First Clicked and now Test Pattern?  Other posters are right...I'm running out of reasons to come back to MSN too...
I have enjoyed the stories you have highlighted. Now I guess my office prodictivity will go up quite a bit. Thanks for the memories.
I just got to know this page and now it's gone.  I loved reading and adding to it.  Now what?!
I'm disappointed that Test Pattern is going away. Like someone else said, one less reason to visit msnbc.com. Newsvine forums are terrible. I'm going to spend more time at Television Without Pity for decent TV discussion and will visit Pop Culture Junk Mail.
Wow. This was sad to read.  But thanks for all the giggles I've had from reading Test Pattern! It was a blast.
