Two nominees---The Sixth Sense and No Country for Old Men. The 6 had everyone in my theater totally on edge and again, it wasn't gore but suspsense to the hilt. NC4OM--perhaps this should be considered the scariest scene ever rather than a scary movie but the scene at the hotel room door between Llewelyn and Chigurh is so scary, I couldn't watch it in the theater.

I would have to say Stephen King's - "Christine" -- the scene where the car is on fire and slowly chasing the guy down - ohhhh that gave me nightmares. Always good to go with John Carpenter movies. "In the Mouth of Madness" is a good one. The original "Halloween" and "The Fog".

There's also the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (actually not very gory at all), "Seven", "Silence of the Lambs", and "The Descent".

And two great Korean horror films from director Joon-ho Bong - "The Host" and "Memories of a Murder". "Memories of a Murder" is one of the most chilling horror movies I've ever seen.

At the time, The Exorcist freaked me out because it was obvious that the devil wasn't forced out by any priest--he left voluntarily after he had accomplished the destruction he sought. In the end, faith had no real power over his evil. I think that was the scariest part of a film whose special effects now seem almost comical. Aliens is high on my list of favorites, along with newer films like Jeepers Creepers, the Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield. And back when I was a child, nothing wea scarier than the talking walls in the 1963 version of The Haunting. But I also like a monster for whom I can feel empathy--like Jeff Goldblum as The Fly.

First of all, let me give a belated welcome back to Gael and Test Pattern. And congratulations on Kelly, who is a real cutie (saw a pic of her on PCJM).

OK, back to the topic at hand: I could post a book here but I’ll add a couple for now.

Carrie – It’s bad enough I was freaked out as a little kid from the prin ads that showed a bloodied and bug-eyed Sissy Spacek. I actually saw this movie on CBS back in the late 70s and by the time I got to the ending…let’s just say I was freaked out.

Dressed To Kill – Brian DePalma was often derided by critics for trying to emulate Alfred Hitchcock, but I have to be honest, few have come closer to doing just that. I won’t spoil for the people who haven’t seen it, but you’ll never look at a matched pair of white shoes in quite the same way again.

Finally, I’ll throw a “monster” movie in here: It’s Alive. Rick Baker created a fantastic monster baby, but you wouldn’t know from watching the movie as you seldom saw it, and when you did it was presented in quick, sometimes blurry shots. And it was all the more effective for it.

I have to agree with you on "The Thing" - that movie had me creeped out for weeks and I am a big-time horror fan. I thought "Poltergeist," especially in its time, was wonderfully spooky with absolutely no stabbing involved. And while I hate to admit it, because I really didn't like the movie, The Blair Witch Project totally raised my hackles (I live out in the woods, and had trouble sitting alone on my deck at night for a while after that one).
If you are old enough to have been around to see them when Jaws and The Exorcist hit theatres, you'd have to put them on the list.
In the vein of movies that have haunted me but aren't really horror movies (at all), "Boys Don't Cry" absolutely gave me nightmares, and at my age, that doesn't happen often.
Finally, for a campy horror flick that manages to be kinda scary and insanely funny at the same time, check out an oldie called "Motel Hell."

Based on jumps and jolts alone I would have to say The Ring (American version). My wife and I rented the Japanese version and actually felt the American version was better. I've never seen my wife jump as high as she did when the girl came through the TV screen and then "jumped" forward into the camera. She nearly fell out of her chair when that happened and left bruises on my arm because she held on so tight.

But my all time favorite is Aliens. The Director's Cut. In the directors cut, after the Marines have been wiped out and they hole up and seal of entrances they also place two automated gun turrets in the access tunnels. Unlike the theatrical version where they find out the aliens are there after turning on the motion detector, in the directors cut they watch the ammo supply deplete on turrets, knowing what's in store for them. After the guns run dry then they turn on the motion detector.

Wow. First of all Carpenter's movie was not "the original". The original starred James Arness as THE THING in the early 50's. No blood, it's great.

What about THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (the original from the 1960's) that is a terryfying movie. No Blood.

I thought the original ALIEN was far more frigthening than the second film ALIENS (another favorite by the way) ALIEN is simply a haunted house movie translated to a space ship. Excellent scary movie.

But my all time favorite is Japanese. KWAIDAN. The movie features a montage of classic Japanese ghost stories. Yuki Ona or the snow vampire. Oichi the earless about ghosts of the Taira terrorizing a blind monk who plays the biwa for them at their graveyard shrine. Very creepy.

Absolutely one of the scariest movies to date has to be "28 Days Later". It completely re-wrote the rules for "zombie" movies by making the zombies fleet of foot while in pursuit of their next victim. And, the creepiest part didn't necessarily even come from the zombies, but, from the uninhibited soldiers introduced towards the end of the movie. The main characters were no safer with the soldiers than will the raging zombies. A soon-to-be classic.

I love all scary/horror movies. Sixth Sense freaked me out because I watched it at home alone and then everytime I saw a shadow, I jumped, expecting to see dead people! Also, the movie High Tension (a French Canadian import) -- but that could be because I was the ONLY person in the entire theater and it just felt like someone was going to jump out from behind me. John Carpenter's "Thing" wasn't the original. Howard Hawk's was. Made in '51, shot in black and white with little to no gore, it follows the same basic plot as Carpenter's: military men and scientists thaw out a frozen alien and try to stop it from "seeding" the world before it's too late. From what I've read, the entire movie's online. Give it a Google.

As for scariest, I'm going to be a little unconventional in my choice here because the horrors in this movie actually happened, though it is a bloody film and made me angry almost as much as it scared me: "Schindler's List". The monsters in this movie are all too human. Nothing supernatural. Nothing from outer space. Chillingly, heartbreakingly human.

Didn't mean to go all serious, but man's inhumanity to man is what scares me the most.

"Poltergeist" - The creepiness starts with that famous "They're heeeeere!", and things quickly go from creepy to frightening. 20-some years later, and it's still one of my favorites.

"An American Haunting" - The new great American ghost story. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes suspense-horror.

"The Mist" - It's from Stephen King, and is one of his better works. The tension gets so thick you could cut it with a knife, and it sticks with you for a bit afterwards. I recommend sticking to decaf for a few hours after watching this one.

Other favorites (already mentioned by other readers) include Alien, The Shining, The Omen, The Exorcist, and The Entity.

As far as movies that are scary, Candyman really got under my skin in the 90s. I really liked the choices you mentioned in your post and agree with them. Recently, The Strangers and The Orphanage were well done.

My favorite scary movies, though, are more recent. Haute Tension was incredibly gory, but the tension director Alexandre Aja cultivated had me biting my nails and feeling very antsy. Additionally, The Descent is a supreme exercise in tension. One of my friends actually paced while watching the film alone and it is one of the only movies in which I will admit to screaming in.

No. 1 for me has to be "The Exorcist." I brought my girlfriend home afterward. We walked into her house, she turned on the lights, looked at me, and screamed: I was as white as a sheet. It had been one hour since we'd left the theater. I couldn't sleep for a month.

No. 2 is "Psycho." The shower scene was a masterpiece of horror, yet the only blood you see was what was being rinsed down the drain. And that was only the second-scariest moment in the film. The scariest was at the end when Anthony Perkins, wearing his murdered mother's dress, attacks Vera Miles. Viewed in the context of its era, "Psycho" broke much new ground in the horror genre.

No. 3 is "Alien." Beleive it or not, the only gory scene is when the alien fetus bursts out of John Hurt's chest, yet one tends to think of it as a bloodfest. The bloodthirsty, skulking, powerful monster is always one step ahead of the hapless humans upon which it feeds and refuses to die even when Ripley has expelled it from the shuttle.

No. 4 is John Carpenter's master of horror, the 1982 remake of "The Thing." (BTW, that's not the original version, as Ms. Cooper states above. The original was filmed in 1951.) Like "Alien," the monster is powerful, hard to find, and likes the taste of human blood. This one has the added ability of being able to "dopplegang" its victims. The survivors never know who is real and who has been Memorexed. The final scene, where Kurt Russell and the other survivor stand amid the wreckage looking at each other, not knowing whether the other is human or alien, gave me the chills.

Actually most of the movies that scared the heck out of me were on the late show when I was a kid. "Night of the Lepus" freaked me out when I saw it as a kid. Nothing scarier than radioactive bunnies the size of a horse with the creepiest screams you ever heard. Or "Them"? Radioactive ants that kill with some kind of acid. Then there was some movie that I can't remember the name of. It had some monster grabbing people, taking them to it's under cave through an underwater access and there were tentacles that left really gross marks on the people. And no, it was the "Swamp Thing." I hated "The Others", I thought it was ridiculous and not scary at all....plus I can't stand Nicole Kidman, so maybe I was biased...

Anyway, if we can lump "suspenseful-scary" in with the "creepy-scary" criteria, then hands-down "Se7en" was the winner. I was so disturbed that I had nightmares, and I was 25 when I saw the movie. I absolutely cannot watch it again, ever.

Also, I thought "28 Days Later" was incredible. It was much less gory than it's sequel (which I also liked a lot), and slower paced, but it was really suspenseful and scary. And finally, "The Audition"--a Japanese horror movie I first heard of on Bravo's "100 Scariest Movie Moments". Creepy, creepy, creepy...a few true "gross-out" moments, but not "torture porn" like "Hostel" or "Saw". Do not watch alone, that girl's eyes haunted me for days.

Gory doesn't make a movie scary- SAW and those go for the cheap scare. The psycological factor/ suspense is what matters. How about the "Bad Seed."

The Shining. Terrifying- especially after staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park while it was being remodeled as a teenager. You could feel the electricity in the air- as well as see it! John Carpenter's original "Halloween" is the scariest slasher flick ever! As stated in the article above, the freakiest thing about any horror movie is the unknown and the suspense. I'd trade in The Devil's Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses for Michael, Jason or Freddy any day of the week!

Okay, have to say that Carrie freaked me out only because we watched it at home on HBO, I must've been 14, my aunt had already seen the movie, I thought it was over but she told me no just wait then she left the room for a supposed bathroom break, in the interim, you get to the dream sequence, well my aunt snuck back in the room was waiting on the side of the couch and timed it perfectly to grab my wrist just as Carrie reaches up out of the grave. Until that point was not scared at all, but now that movie still freaks me out a little...

The others mentioned that I saw I found creepy, but the only one that scared me was the original When A Stranger Calls. Never expected that ending....

oh yeah, and on Poltergeist my father pulled a similar joke, with the tennis ball scene... also scaring the heck out of me.

The scariest part of The Excorist for me was the soundtrack... between the MRI scene early on and the way they ran the sounds backwards to make all the demonic noise coming out of Reagan... more scary than any blood and guts could be.

Second point of how movies still haunt you, I saw The Ring in college. I was living in a dorm with a friend. We had gone to bed around 1:30am. I got a call about 10 minutes later with a scary caller that said "I just called to tell you, you don't matter!" My roommate heard it too. We freaked out turned on the lights and the TV to distract us, but they kept showing The Ring commercials! We wouldn't answer that phone for weeks! (It turned out to be a prank call... but a scary one thanks to The Ring!)

Let's not forget about Freddie! Nightmare on Elm Street (the first one) should be on this list. The original "WAR OF THE WORLDS" in B&W set the fear mold for me, as a little kid I watched it- alone. The ending with the aliens all dying? I never remembered that!

When the "new" version was released a few years ago, I thought I'd watch it just for fun. The sound of the ray guns- the same sound as the old movie- the shape of the scanner- probe- tip thing on the ships- all the same.

I love Poltergeist, i saw it when it first came out back when i was 10 and it had me keeping my closet door shut at night until i was 16. There may not be any murders in it, but there is that one gory sequence where one of the paranormal investigators gets sick watching the steak crawl across the counter and then gets a vision of peeling off his own face in the bathroom sink. That was pretty intensely gory for a PG movie

I don't know about the original "The Shining" as being very scary - some things were for sure, but if you read the book, there were a couple of things that got me: 1) Jack Nicholson by that time was known for doing really crazy off the wall things in film and in the book the character was just a Joe-Scmoe and 2) the wife in the book was supposed to be real pretty and in the theater we watched this movie in, everytime her character came on the screen the audience was tossing popcorn at her and booing.

I am a fan of the old horror movies, where the real scare was in what they did not show you. There was one I saw when I was quite young (don't remember the name) where the premise was that a mad scientist kidnapped and removed the beauty of young girls to somehow restore his very disfigured wife. The last scene in the movie showed the woman (after her husband had worked on her for quite a long time) in front of mirror slowly removing her bandages and the camera focuses closer and closer on her eyes and as the final bandage falls away we see her eyes widen in horro and hear her screaming.

Jaws---the first one. I am 35 years old & I still can not float on a raft in the ocean for more than a minute max before I start envisioning Jaws coming up from underneath me & chomping me to bits like that little kid that was floating along on his raft & you see him from the shark's perspective underneath the water with his legs dangling off his raft & the shark just makes a bee line for him & then all you see is his bloody raft floating up to the beach with huge bite marks in it. I saw 'The Shining' and 'Carrie' when I was waaaay too young...the hand coming out of the ground still scares me!
'28 Days Later' - the scene that stays with me is when the drop of blood lands in the guy's eye, and you just know that he's done for.
I didn't see 'Psycho' until a few years ago, and I've seen the shower scene parodied so many times, so it didn't quite scare me like I thought it would. However, the last scene where Anthony Perkins has that creepy smile as the voiceover says, "Why, I wouldn't even harm a fly"...that still gives me the shivers.
And Dario Argento's "Suspiria"...OMG. I watched most of it with my hands over my eyes. I couldn't sleep for months. If you want suspense (and some gore)rent this. "The Only Thing More Terrifying Than The Last 12 Minutes Of This Film Are The First 92."

The most scary recent film I've seen is "The Descent." It's about a group of women who go caving together, get lost and then realize: THEY AREN'T ALONE. Getting lost in a cave was enough to scare me silly. Genuinely scary movies are few and far between these days in my opinion. As a few others have mentioned, a major exception is Neil Marshall's The Descent. It's a little gory at times but it never relies on blood guts alone to generate chills.

Another major exception is 28 Weeks Later. Frightening almost to the point that it's disturbing. A truly horrifying horror movie.

Wolf Creek was also pretty intense.

I suggest renting all three of these movies and watching them late at night with all of the lights out. ;)

I agree with an earlier poster that The Uninvited is a great ghost story. No gore, but it is very frightening. I also love Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon and Haunted with Kate Beckinsale and Aidan Quinn. Both are ghost stories that don't need to gross you out to give you the creeps.

There were two that stand out. One was part of a made for T.V. movie called " Trilogy of Terror". There were 3 stories, hence the title, but the one that stuck with me was about a woman who obtains a small idol. It's about 10 inches high, has a mouthful of jagged teeth and carries a spear. Something brings it to life, and it attacks the woman. She never knew where it would come from, since it could hide almost anywhere. *Shiver* The other movie that gave me nightmares for weeks afterwards was (wait for it) "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" No really, it scared me half to death. There was one scene in particular that creeped me out, where a portrait had been stabbed and appeared to be bleeding. I guess I was too young to understand it was supposed to be funny watching Don Knotts be scared. I still can't watch it.

Saw Exorcist when I was five, sitting on the floor in front of the TV peeking through my fingers. Still shudder to remember Linda Blair's demon-voice.

But... does anyone recall a made for TV movie- I think in either the late 70's or very early 80's- I think it was called "This House Posessed" and starred Parker Stevenson (Hardy Boys)? It was about a house that was "posessed" by a jealous spirit and the house literally tried to imprison him. Very creepy scene where a lady guest of his is taking a shower with her eyes closed and is unaware that the water has turned to blood- she's washing her hair, oblivious, getting drenched in blood and then opens her eyes and starts screaming.

As scary movies go i can't argue against The Shinning as being the scariest...I couldn't sleep for weeks.

I would also nominate the Exorcist III, the scenes in the old persons hospital ward are just crazy scary.

The original Halloween, the scene were the girl is slowly backing into the dark closet looking towards the bedroom door for MM and the slowly his face materializes from the dark closet behind her...to this day I can't sleep with any door open.

For weeks after Silence of the Lambs I would glance behind me looking for someone wanting to eat my liver.

Finally, the original French version of the Vanishing, the last scene is sick and disturbing. Note avoid the absolutely attrocious American version starring Jack Bauer, totally destroys the classic that is the original French version.

The Changeling (w/Geo. C. Scott) is a great scary flick. I also loved 1408, Lady in White (w/Len Cariou & Lukas Haas), and The Exorcist, too.

While Jack Nicholson was creepy in the movie version of The Shining, I really liked the TV miniseries of it much better; it was creepy AND it stayed true to the book, which the movie version didn't. I also liked the first Salem's Lot miniseries, too (late 1970s).

There's also an older, little known film that is a real horror gem, Let's Scare Jessica to Death. If you can find it on VHS or DVD, check it out; I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Ok...I LOVE scary movies, but many make me giggle like a school girl. The only movie that ever scared me, I didn't even think was scary when I watched it. "The Ring" was mildly entertaining, but it scared me the more I thought about it. Imagine going home in the middle of the night to an empty house (my parents were at my uncles house across town) and hopping on the couch. Then the tv turns on with nothing but static. I later found out the controller had gotten stuck between the cushions, but needless to say, I spent the next hour and a half sitting on the sidewalk staring at my house until my parents got home. Horror Movies are my fav genre! The ones that stand out in my mind as the scariest include:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the original version. I recall during one of the final scenes, the ENTIRE audience in the theatre actually began applauding for the character who was trying to run away!

Hellraiser - as a friend described it, "what everyone's own personal hell must be like!"

Audition - a Japanese movie with subtitles. Not only was this a scary movie but having to concentrate and read the subtitles meant you could not turn away from the screen to avoid the horror. I tried to watch it on a big screen tv with the lights on and a bowl of popcorn in my lap. About midway through, I had to turn on the lights, put down the bowl and picked the popcorn up off the floor!!!

I think scary but not gory is the original The Thing. The black and white verson. That was incredible move back when there was NO CG and a man in that suit. The Entity which someone already mention. There is no mention of Psycho which TMC shows once a month. That music gets me every single time. The Birds is another classic; you can hear them coming but as they are running down the street, everyone is twisting heads to find out where the attack is coming from, it's good stuff!

Children of the Corn was the 1st scary movie I watched alone as a child. The parents were out for the nite & my big bro was left to watch me. Needless to say I was terrified of the corn growing at my grandmother's for like a decade after!

The old skool movies w/Bette Davis, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane freaked me out when I was a kid.
In HHSC, I bet I had the same horrified look on my face as Charlotte when the head roles down the stairs. But she looked so 'pleasant' while sitting in the car when the guy handed her the letter.

In WHTBJ, the scenes that freaked me out had to do with the trays of food Baby Jane would bring to her sister Blanche. Blanche was too scared to eat after getting the jacked up tray (don't want to spoil it for those who may not have seen it).

What I think qualifies a movie as 'most' scary is the after affects/thoughts years and years later. Like the person who is disturbed by the name Malachi after watching Children of the Corn. I get a shiver when I hear of folks with the last name of Mayhew from HHSC.

One other thing - Some one mentioned Child's Play. I am the proud owner of a 1 foot tall Chucky doll (not the Good Guy doll). I found a shop in Atlanta that had The Chucky Doll, Bride of Chucky, and Seed of Chucky Doll. They were about two feet tall. For some reason my hubby would not buy them for me. (sadness)

House, with William Katt of Greatest American Hero fame, absolutely terrified me(flying skeletons with shotguns and a skeletal Richard Moll, I still shudder.) and believe it or not, Gremlins gave me nightmares, but I was only 11 and we were at the late show. The original Jaws terrified me, yes it had some gore. But the true terrifying parts for me at least were the following scenes.

The first girl swimmer being dragged through the water. That actress did a phenomenal job.

Richard Dreyfus exploring Ben Gardners boat underwater. Sure the head popped out hence gore. But the suspense of the moment and you thinking he was coonstantly going to be attacked then.

Quints chilling details of when he was in the water after the USS Indianapolis sank.

A few others, that movie terrified me out of the water.

Steven Spielberg and the cast did an AWESOME job.

The three sequels sucked and were nothing more than slash and gash. But that original can still terrify me.

People have mentioned a lot of really good films here.

"The Shining" is my favorite horror movie and I think, one of the scariest of all time. I've seen it at least 10 times and have read the book, but I still have to sleep with the lights on if I watch it.

"Psycho" -- I still hate closing the shower curtain in hotels. I read somewhere that a lady wrote to Hitchcock complaining that her daughter had seen some move and wouldn't take a bath and then refused to shower after seeing Psycho and Hitchcock wrote back and said "Then madam, I suggest you have her dry-cleaned."

"Event Horizon" -- I thought this was scary as hell the first time I saw it, but unlike "The Shining," which always scares me, I feel like "Event Horizon" looses the scare factor when you know what's going on.

"SAW" -- I hate "torture porn" and didn't see the sequels, and I laughed at most of it, but the ending of the first film is one of the best horror movie endings there is.

"Blair Witch" -- I can't deal with the shaky camera work, but if I could, I would love this one.

"Cloverfield" -- Again, with the shaky camera. This one actually made me puke. But even if it hadn't, once they showed the monster, it ceased to be scary. The thing was just a bad Godzilla.

Blood, guts and gore don't scare me. If anything, this cheapens the effectiveness of the scare. And seeing the scary monster AT ALL doesn't scare me because it's someone else's vision of what THEY THINK should be scary to you.

The scariest movies, for me, have always been the kind where you don't see the scary thing chasing people, where it's left up to your imagination. I love it when movies come out and don't tell show us what the scary thing is. Movies that demonstrate this would include:

Signs
The Others
Blair Witch Project

And, to a lesser extent:

The Grudge
The Ring

I thought The Mist was great until the movie told us that giant, mutant bugs were the scary things in the mist. Yawn.

A long list of good and not-so-good movies and as usual, so many people don't bother to read the pages worth of entries and get upset that their favorite wasn't mentioned when it actually was a lot.

I'm in my fifties and as a child the scariest movie was the original The Blob starring Steve McQueen. The alien pink goo could just slide in under the door and swallow you up - how do you protect yourself from that? The remake overdid the special effects and wasn't scary at all to me.

Jaws I saw with my brothers in a sold out theater so we had to sit in the front row. When Brody is chumming bait over the stern and the shark comes out of the water for the first time, I ended up in the second row.

My wife refuses to watch Alien after seeing the chest-busting birth of the little monster.

That's an easy question, the original "Halloween", especially if you had seen it when first released. there wasn't movies like that releassed before, with the brutal violence and sudden appearances of the masked killer. John Carpenter and Debbra Hill created the ultimate and Granddaddy of all Slasher films. What made it even creepier, you never saw Michael Myers' face, also, the thought of "It could really happen here" ran through your minds sitting in the movie theater that night, it wasn't like some horrible unbelieveable creature, it was a human being, for that fact alone, no movie comes close!

"GHOST STORY" by Peter Straub. No blood but watch alone-or even w/ a friend-in the dark, and you WILL be scared. Excellent cast as well including: Fred Astair, Doug Fairbanks, Jr., Patricia Neal, and the ever-so-creepy Alice Krige(in her youth). Also, I am NOT a fan of Mel Gibson at all, but "SIGNS" by M. Night Shyamalan surprised me. I thought it sounded stupid and intended to avoid it; however, one day with nothing else on, I made myself sit through it, and am glad I did. It was this film that got me into Night. It was the subtle, FINE DETAILS in that film that made it scary to me. This is also another one with no blood, but very worth it. Shame that so many peeps diss "THE DEVILS REJECTS", cause, actually, it's brilliant in its way.

The originally Amityville Horror scared me so badly at the time that I wanted to leave early. It was the music. Back in the 70's that kind of music was new.

By the way, I totally disagree about Cloverfield being a good movie. I thought that it wasted way too much time at the cocktail party, then it ended in what seemed to be the middle of the movie. No mention was ever made of where the monster came from and I hated the way that it was filmed. I thought the ending sucked. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. Rosemary's baby, Carrie, and the original Stepford Wives are all scary, but the scariest movie, that still haunts me to this day as the most disturbing end to a movie ever, is The Vanishing - NOT the completely changed, Hollywwood-action, shouldn't even have the same title movie with Kiefer Sutherland & Jeff Bridges, but the ORIGINAL (it's in Dutch but subtitled) The Vanishing. Truly horrifying.

I have to agree with Mike F. The ONLY time I was ever actually terrified as I watched a Motion Picture was seeing "The Exorcist" in a theater. I actually found myself praying that they just wouldn't go back to that room.

The old Dracula movies with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing scared the crap out of me when I was a kid (Best was Horror of Dracula, 1958).

Also agree with Rosemary's Baby, The Birds, and Nightmare on Elm street.

One fun movie I used to like to watch as a kid was 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken' wit Don Knotts.

Honestly Excorcist is the scariest movie ever made...
but for a personal note, i saw childs play when i was a very young, so this movie gave me nightmares for years. but now i own all the movies and consider them funny.
I am arachnaphobic, so when i watch the discovery channel and they have a show on spiders, that would easily scare me more then any movie out there.

28 Days Later...the premise of zombies out for human blood is a little silly, but it's creepy to think what life would be like if the world as we knew it ended. It's chilling to imagine all the trappings of modern life disappearing, no supermarket to go to, no TV to watch, no services, electricity, water, etc.

I think the original Halloween and even Halloween 2 are my scariest. There isn't a lot of blood, but you do get some really creepy music and lots of jump factor. The main thing that scared me was just the thought that someone could sit there silent for years doing nothing but plotting the best time and way to kill his baby sister creeeeeps me out...and on the flip side that someone like Laurie could have a psycho brother coming for her and not even know he exists.

I admit "Aliens" is probably the scariest. Ripley and Newt trapped in the room with the face hugger by I'm very "Unmad About You" Corporate Slimeball Paul Rieser. Then trapped in the room with the Colonial Marines as the aliens slowly draw closer only to realize they are in the ceiling!!!!!!

Classic Climax too as Ripley in the robotic stevedore battles the Alien Queen as the reactor core overload counts down. Nerve racking.

Cameron's original Terminator film is pretty scary too.

A slightly belated reply but I think the movie that scared me the worst was The Omen. I first saw it when I was 13 and it totally undid me...then again I have a "thing" about severed heads so that whole plate of glass scene had me cowering behind a couch pillow.
I'm also a huge fan of Asian horror so I have to agree with you on The Ring. I convinced a bunch of my friends to watch the original before going to see the US remake, and lemme tell you I've never seen so many normally composed and collected folks lose it. I think it's because it does away with that whole fourth wall concept and you go from, "it's safe because it's on tv and it wont' hurt me" to "It's safe it's on tv...no wait it's coming toward me...okay it's OUT of the tv!" I remember the night after we watch it I heard a dragging noise next door followed by a slam and my neighbor later told me she moved her tv into the closet for the night. :-D

Went to see the sequel of Night of the Living Dead - Dawn of the Dead, with a boyfriend. I was in my late twenties. A particularly scary scene had just occured. The animated corpse jumps up. The whole audience shreeked, jumped, yelled. Then we all settled down. Just seconds later, my boyfriend brushed the back of my neck and I screamed....and just about everyone else in the theatre did too!!! Embarrassingly funny!!

I got all caught up in the hype of Blair Witch Project. I was so mad at the end of the movie that I demanded my money back!! What a major let down. I kept watching for something scary to happen then it ended with a guy standing in the corner?!?!?! WTH?!?!

To me that was the beginning of these 'wannabe scary' movies with jacked-up endings. I don't mind an ending that leaves reasonable room for a sequel, but movies that just end all up in the air as an attempt at being clever just piss me off. Dark Water was one as was the one with Robert Deniro with the little girl.

And for that matter, what the heck is Robert Deniro doing in a 'scary' movie anyway?!?!

The Exorcist for obvious reasons, although I would have never let my child play that part.

People tend to confuse gore with horror. It's why movies like Saw and Hostel and Devil's Rejects have become so popular. True horror films don't rely strictly on the violence.

Rosemary's Baby -- A very overlooked gem in the horror genre, unless you are particularly old school.

The Orphanage -- A horror film with a lot of depth and spiritual value.

Alice Sweet Alice -- An obscure suspense horror. Severely overlooked, probably due to the time frame (70s) and subject matter (Catholic churchgoers).

No Country for Old Men -- A film that gets the extreme violence out of the way early -- that way the audience can only imagine from there on out. An extremely clever way to tell the audience without showing. Not to mention it manages to be a relevant social commentary.

The Mist -- One of the only versions of a Stephen King story that actually justifies the original work. All changes made were fitting. Also an accurate perspective on human nature during crises, and a look at an extreme downward slope of karma.
