No Grissom, no interest. Most of the other members of the cast COULD be switched on and off. I wanted Jorja Fox gone years ago. Nick Stokes is annoying at best. Warrick, well I liked him, yet he left. But Grissom is the reason I watch CSI and the reason why I dont watch CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. And while I like Katherine Willows, if there is no Grissom, CSI will go from "Cannot Miss When It Airs" to "might watch if nothing else is on, and even then that is a stretch." I give if 1 year unless Grissoms "guest appearances" equate to half of the season, in order to try and con people into accepting the new lead.

While I like Kurt R., Larry F. and John M. as actors, I'm having a hard time picturing them in CSI. How about having Marg H.'s character step into Grissom's spot? I've always seen her as the "second-in-command" and now I think she would be great as "first".

I agree. He was the linch pin, the character the others related to, even when they were relating to each other. As for upgrading Wendy, Super Dave, and Hodges - I don't care for that at all. I find them annoying at the very least and would prefer to see less of them, not more.

I think the show has gone downhill ever since Grissom and Sara became a couple. I know that a TON of people will disagree with me on that one, but I've never understood the basis for their relationship. There was always a crush-like tension coming from Sara, but Grissom repeatedly seemed put off by her antics and odd behavior, as though he knew she was just looking for a father figure. At any rate, I've watched the series since then, but more sporadically than before. When Grissom leaves, I imagine I too will slowly stop watching altogether.

No, this won't work. Petersen is the reason I watch. In literary terms he is the "narrator" or point of intelligence of the show's content. This does not constitute "jumping" of sharks or anything else. This is burying the shark. CSI without Grissom is CSDEAD.

I'm right there with you! With half the cast gone, I'm not sure how much next season will hold my interest. Grissom and Warrick were the core, the heart, of the show, and now we're left with Katherine (potential there), Greg (my favorite), and Nick (he doesn't do much for me). I guess building the characters of the lab techs may help a little, but they haven't been developed as well as Greg was at the beginning, so my interest is still pretty low with them.
Now if Doc Robbins leaves (Hall), I'm really going to lose it :)

I am very,very sad William Petersen will not be back next season. He was the HEART AND SOUL of CSI. I KNOW he wants to pursue other things, BUT there is noone AS GOOD AS GIL GRISSOM. There was such a good relationship between him & the other castmates. It was visible on-screen, as much as off-screen.
I will reserve judgement until I see whoever takes his place, BUT I can GUARANTEE you, whoever takes his place will be SCRUTINIZED by us fans, AND probably won't make "THE GRADE."

The thought of Grissom and Sara "riding off into the sunset" together upon his departure makes me ill. I don't care nor want to see anything about the character's offscreen lives. It's just more clutter that takes away from the essence of what makes CSI the show it is.
As for "replacing" Grissom?? Yeah, good luck with that. Sara was easily forgettable for me, so I don't miss her one bit; Grissom, however, is the heart and soul of the show, and anyone else will pale by comparison no matter who they pick to fill the role.
If CSI didn't jump the shark when they brough Grissom and Sara's "romance" to the forefront, then it will as soon as Grissom takes his final bow.

I'm inclined to agree. I love CSI but I'm not sure if I'll continue to watch now. It was bad enough when Sara left, but then Warrick's death, and now with Grissom heading out. i get the feeling in a couple of seasons none of the original primary characters will still be there. I absolutely agree! I did not care one way or the other when Sarah left the department. Her character struggled to win the hearts of regular viewers and we got over it quickly. Grissom's departure, however, will leave the show severely wounded and ultimately contribute to the demise of the show. Creators and writers will try putting a few stitches and a roll of gauze on the wound, but without Grissom it will bleed out quickly.

I am more than willing to keep on watching CSI all next season to give it a far chance. Who knows, it might actually still be watchable. When Liev Schreiber was announced to be on CSI, I heard lots of comments about how people wouldn't watch it without Grissom. But, those were actually some of the best episodes in recent seasons. I'm willing to give CSI the benefit of the doubt to get things together without Grissom. But, that being said - CSI without Grissom is like having a sandwich without the bread. Without the foundation, it just isn't the same.

I will give it till the end of the season to see how it goes, but you're right, the quirkiness that made the show will be hard to replace. MASH was successful in adding and subtracting characters, but that's about the only show that I feel was able to pull it off.

The original CSI is excellent with great character development, storyline and cinamatography (love the music). The other CSI off shoots are some of the stupidest trash on TV barely ranking above reality TV. I will be giving the new characters a chance since I saw it work well with LAPD blue and I believe it will still be a top notch show. When you name the future you may be calling it forth. Be careful what you wish for or CSI will be replaced with "My goldfish is better than yours" in another reality show where insults, gossip and backstabbing in a completely meaningless setting passes for entertainment. I wonder for who.

I can't believe Grissom's charactor is leaving too. First, "Sara", then "Warrick", and not "Grissom". I agree with the writer of this article; the characters are essential to the show. Once Grissom is gone, I to will probably stop watching the show. It's too bad, because this was my favorite show. I used to like Law & Order,but once Jerry Orbach passed away, the show was not the same. I don't like it when a show replaces characters and expects the audience to not really notice.

When 3 main characters leave (Fox, Dourdan and now Peterson) within a year you more or less have a new show on your hands. There's no way this will even remotely feel like the old show. Peterson brought a nerd factor to the lab that Miami and NY just do not have. Those other two "CSI" shows are nothing but playboys in lab coats acting like full blown detectives and vigilantes. I seriously doubt the writers/producers will keep it the same feel; And -that- is a shame.

I never understand why producers keep a show going, despite the fact that the key characters leave. Why can't they end the show on a high note, appreciate it for what it was and move on in life? I know that there is money to be made, but for me personally, I would rather produce a quality product. They should take pride in the fact that CSI did so well over the years, grasping at straws to keep it running does nothing but kill what it was and what it had to make it special.

Well, the disappointments just never seem to end! Seems like all my very favorite shows just keep losing characters. After the strike last year anyway, everything went down hill. I'm not surprised that he's leaving. His first interest is theater, and this leaves him more time for it. I stopped watching the show after Grissom and Sara hooked up, so Petersen's exit doesn't really impact me that much. The quality of the show just dipped after their little romance. Given that a lot of fans quit watching at this point, and many will stop watching after Grissom exits, I think the show is probably on its last legs.

I will be very sad to see Grissom go. I definitely don't think that the show will be even close to as good. That said...Laurence Fischburne could be VERY interesting. I am a big fan of ol' Morpheus. I think that John Malkovich would be almost to quirky for the show. And how hysterical would it be if Kurt Russel could make a big trouble in little china reference "and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" Perfectly said and I agree wholeheartedly. I too watch CSI because of Grissom (and William Petersen's brilliant portrayal of him) and will have no reason to continue to watch CSI after he leaves. I understand his reasons for leaving and wish him the very best (as I do Jorja Fox and Gary Dourdan). I do think Petersen is happier in the theater and we as fans can look forward to more varied and brilliant performances by him on the stage. Unfortunately, CSI: LV will no longer be the best and most unique of the CSI franchise and will become just another procedural. It may continue (ala Law & Order and ER) but it will just be another show you might tune into when you have nothing else to do versus 'must see' TV that you make a point of never missing each week. Personally, I think the executives at CBS should have been less greedy about keeping the show going and should have promoted a final season and written a finale episode to give CSI and its ENTIRE ORIGINAL ensemble a really grand exit with some closure instead of limping off into the night.

Paige, while I am in agreement with you about the general thrust of your article, I think you have shortchanged the producers of CSI. Did you first watch the show because of "ohh they cast William Peterson factor" or was it because it was a really cool show to watch and then you came to love ALL of the characters. I myself will give the new version of the show plenty of time to re-engage me the way it initially did because I think the producers of the show are smart enough to not "jump the shark" with any bizarre casting.

I too only watch the show because of Grissom. I thought Jorja Fox and Grissom had some chemistry going. I thought about not watching after she left the show but stayed because of Grissom. Even with Brown leaving I thought I would stay but now???? Why is it that the best charactors are leaving. I enjoyed Brown getting into all kinds of scrapes. It made the show real. The chemistry between Grissom and Sarah made the show believable. It only showed that the characters were capable of human emotions.

I'm willing to see where it goes. I'm with Carol Mendelsohn on this one: Don't try to replace Grissom with version 2.0. You mentioned Law & Order as an example: as much as I normally like Dennis Farina, it felt like they tried too hard to stick to the junior partner/senior partner thing, and it felt like a cheap replacement for Jerry Orbach. In the last few years, however, they've made a few changes, relaxed their "formula", and I think the show's as good now as it's ever been. And I liked Liev Schrieber on CSI, I thought he fit in well. He can't come back, but if they keep the stories good and don't try to make a "New Grissom", I'm willing to give it a go.

I'll really miss Grissom and Warrick but I'm hopefull that the show can continue it's great story telling and remain Must See TV.

I've always been struck by the sort of family-type dynamic on this show: Grissom's been looked up to as a father figure, and there's been talks about how Warrick might step up should Grissom ever be gone. So with Grissom gone, and Warrick likely dead, it would be interesting to see if Nick would sort of step up to the plate. I think there's room for the other characters to do more, and while I'll miss Grissom, I'm looking forward to see what effect it has on the stories.

Kurt Russell, Laurence Fishburne or John Malkovich are all interesting ideas, though I can't really see any of them pulling it off. Grissom occupied a unique position as a character -- part cold-fish scientist, part interestingly quirky guy (e.g., as someone who could interact with Lady Heather). That balance will be tough to replace. My idea would be to knock on Ed Harris's door to see if he would be interested in some TV work.

When I started seing CSI i loved all the characters, but I fell in love with Gil Grissom. Obviously, he is the star of the show. The cast complemented each other and it was a success because of all of them When Jorja left, it was weird for me to watch the show, because I thought their realtionship was key to the dynamic of the show.It didn't feel the same. Now, William Petersen is leaving the show. I don't think it will survive.I certainly won't watch it without Gil Grissom.

I think I will stop watching CBS because they took off Moonlight which was my very favorite show on TV, period but closely followed by CSI:LV. And Grissom was the reason for that. Let's see- no grissam, no sara, no warrick, to me, equals not much of a show. This show, unlike law and orde (which I loved after Brisco came aboard), has developed an intricate relationship between the characters, all of them, that can't be duplicated by putting in new characters. Can't picture Kurt Russell (my maiden name, no relation, I know of), coming even close to the perfect timing and reactionary presence Petersen has. The rest of the cast is great but without their go-to guy, grissam,(Petersen), the show will surely suffer. With 3 of the main characters gone, the others will be flundering to make a meaningful connection storywise, to anyone new, that will hold viewers attention. When pieces of a puzzle go missing, it ruins the whole puzzle. Good luck to Petersen, Fox and Dourdan! Been a nice ride! I will continue to watch and hope for the best!

OMG OMG ... NO GRISSOM?! He centered and provided the interaction between characters in the show to actually make it entertaining. He is the Yoda and the Shaolin Priest of CSI. At least they wont be trying to replace the character. I do love the remaining cast but I just hope they don't try to copy the Grissom character. I once had the pleasure of meeting William Peteresen in 2001 and he couldn't have been more nice in person and left a lasting impression on my wife and 14 year old daughter. He was standing in line in front of us to by Ice Cream when my daughter said, "Oh my god, look dad its Gil Grissom" he turned around and laughed and made small conversation with us. He even went so far as to buy our three sundaes. Watching him on TV these past 10 years was like watching a personal friend. I love the show but feel like everyone else. Without him, I hope this is the seasons last. Thank you W.P. for playing such a great character that everyone could admire.

I am a big fan of both CSI-Miami (and yes, I love David Carruso) and CSI-NY but can't imagine them without the leads (Carruso & Sinise). Writing out the Sara character was a-ok with me. She was a drag to the story line. Please keep George Eads - he is absolute eye-candy.

CBS finally came up with good winning combination shows which made them a top network again and for some reason cannot help themselves from trying to fix things that aren't broken. They are changing the dynamics of not only CSI but Criminal Minds, NCIS etc. We become loyal viewers because of the cast chemistry and the specific dynamics of the show and then they change evrything and the show no longer provides the same feelings and reasons we watched. I doubt seriously we will be watching any of the above shows this seasonand are much less apt to invest in any of the new offerings as they will only change them as well as soon as we commit to them. Anyone read a good book lately???????

Each character has a special place in my heart.. they all have their moments.. but Grissom's quirky intellectualism is the draw for the fans. Sure we all love Greg's goofieness and Nick is the boytoy.. personally Ive never liked Katherine much but she was never supposed to be off-beat. Warrick was a MUCH underappreciated favorite. Doc rocks period. Sara was is and always will be my favorite female on the show. Bringing in Malkovich or Fishburne or Russell is too much.. I think the producers are over-reaching. They need a lesser known but equally talented actor. Liev Schreiber wouldve rocked. CSI Vegas is the only CSI worth watching.. all the others try but dont even come close to being as good. I will like hundreds of thousands of others probably stop watching faithfully when Griss leaves. I friggin cried when Sara left and I probably will when Grissom leaves.. but Im a self admitted GIANT nerd so its all good. I will however give whomever they choose a chance..

As a producer and creator who built the entire show around his character, you'd think William Peterson would recognize that the show just doesn't work without him. I like most of the other characters a lot, too, but Grisson is the intellectual, moral, and even comic center of the entire setup. It was a completely different show when he was gone for the short term a few years back, and it'll be different once again after he leaves. It might be a good show, but it won't be AS good, and certainly not the same.

As for the suggested replacements, I can't imagine why Kurt Russell is even being considered. Who's going to buy him as an egghead? Lawrence Fishburne would be my choice of the three (not that I think it'll matter that much in the end).

Petersen's portrayal of Grissom is nuanced -- low key and thoughtful, to counterbalance the glitter and absurd pace in which DNA evidence is available in minutes. The Hodges character can be annoying, but that's his job in the cast, and could morph into a more considerate and responsible character (possibly due to a crisis that awakens these traits in him); so could Greg. We will certainly miss Grissom, and if other characters don't develop into interesting and complementary roles, CSI LV may indeed tank. But there is potential here, if the producers recognize what is needed and don't give us more trivial characters of whom we could care less.

I'm not quite willing to give up on it, but I will expect more meaty characters or what will be the point? I admit that the chances of this may seem slim...

Anytime an actor tries to hold up a show for more money or feels that the show cannot go on without them, he/she should have their heads examined. Look at Star Trek:TNG, Star Gate, to name a few. There have been hundreds of series held at bay by actors who thought they were better, indispensible, or tried to "extort" the producers for higher salaries. Personally, Catherine and Nick are far more enjoyable to watch then Grissom. Peterson had a gold mine there, why give it up. I would take the role and keep it forever, if asked (that won't happen). There used to be a chemistry between the cast, over the past few years that chemistry has dwindled. NOW CSI: New York has the best cast and the best chemistry. Rather have Fishburne in the cast, or go for James Earl Jones - even better. I won't miss Peterson. Or brig Sinese from New York to Las Vegas. Peterson ticked me off when he would not guest on CSI: Miami when it premiered. As for Caruso, I hope that was a fatal wound

I'm surprised Mr. Petersen stayed with the program as many years as he did. As has been previously noted, he's a theatre guy at heart. As star and Exec. Prod. of a top-ranked tv show for eight years, he now has tons of money to go in whatever creative direction he desires, possibly remounting Remains Theatre in Chicago. As endearing as Gil Grissom is to his fans, and as rare as the chemistry was with his co-stars, Mr. Petersen has much more to investigate as an artist.

I was impressed if not riveted with Liev Schrieber's interpretation. A theatre guy too, the CSI producers may have had his character killed off because he possibly did not desire a long-term gig. Schrieber hopefully will now be amazing us with better films than lame remakes like "The Manchurian Candidate".

I'll watch without Grissom. Hopefully they'll start to get back to crime and forensics instead of personal stories. I think these side stories have hurt CSI in recent seasons and is only going to be worse by attracting fans who relate more to the character than the storyline. Those who were in it strictly for the episodic adventure were alienated by the whole Gil-Sara thing. Those who liked it are now alienated by their leaving. Oh well. I say kick Katherine to the curb too. She's the most despicable character on TV today. When Gil leaves maybe we won't see any more of Lady Heather too. Talk about the worst attempt to bring something erotic to the show for Gil to play with.

As a side note to the poster who mentioned MASH. IMHO MASH only got better as they got rid of Frank and Radar. These two became more and more over the top as the series went along until they became mockeries of themselves. They needed to move along or it was going to hurt the show.

People are always so adverse to change - why is that? If William Petersen wants to test other pastures, I applaud him, and wish him good luck. I'm open to see where the show goes after Grissom leaves. It sucks to see a good actor to leave, but defintitely don't blame WP for wanting to work on different projects. My interest in the show has somewhat waned this past season (Didn't watch all of the season 8). I thought some of the eppys were lame even with Grissom there. If shows like ER and L&O can make it, I'm sure CSI will also. They just have to bring up the quality of writing and stories and make sure any new cast additions mesh well with the other characters. I thought Liev Schreiber did a good job, so there's hope.

I guess I'm the outsider here?? I have never 'liked' Grissom's character, for me, always too serious, too far out there, always seemed to have the angle and the answers, which we know in real life just doesn't happen that way. I'll take Marge Helgenberger any day of the week, she starts the fire, boils the water and never lights a match!!
I don't think a single actor/actress makes the show, it's the combination of acting and the creative writing that keep me interested.
Sorry folks, give it a chance, who knows, the new cast may be a great combination.

I, too am so sorry Grissom/Petersen is leaving. Truly an interesting character portrayed by a very interesting actor. I watch the show mainly for him, but I think CSI has managed to integrate and grow secondary and new characters, especially Greg and Hodges. That episode where Hodges discovered the Miniature killer's signature was terrific CSI writing and acting. I am going to trust the writers to create a replacement character that will add to the ensemble. Personally, I like the idea of Kurt Russell - a supremely underrated actor. That's a CSI show I would definitely tune in to see. And still watch repeats to see Grissom...... sigh!

Andrea, Grissom/Sara were 'hooking up' since day one on the show. She was always his love interest. Every year, the pivotal episode was something to do with Grissom loving Sara so I don't know how you hung in for 7 years only to stop watching when they were officially dating.

This is the death of this show. Losing Warrick was bad enough, but with Grissom gone there is no reason to watch anymore.

Why do they insist on taking good shows and destroying or canceling them? Who makes these stupid decisions. (IE Stargate SG-1, First Wave, et al.)

I have enjoyed watching CSI LV because as a someone who has worked in the government sector for over 20 years, the characters - particularly Grissom - and the office spaces were people and places who I could identify with. The other CSIs just seemed like fantasies. Oh well, I guess now with all the character changes on CSI LV and the decision to move "Without a Trace", I will no longer have any excuses for not having night meetings on Thursdays.

Laurence Fishburne will give CSI an incredible new edge. I, like others, thought that losing Grissom, William Peterson, would spell an end to chemistry among the characters. Now I'm intrigued. This could bring a freshness to the show that may keep the series alive for several more years.

Remember Liev Schreiber's "Kepler" and how that altered the show's dynamic for just a few short episodes. The worst thing the producers did was kill him off but I'm more than williing to give Mr Fishburne a chance. CSI Kepler proved that there could be life after Grissom. Now it's Laurence Fishburne's chance to prove it again.

To me, Gil Grissom made the show. Without him, I'm sure the ratings will falter, and drop off. Many a show has been ruined just for the sake of change. I wish Wm. Peterson all the best in his future endeavors. Those who run the show apparently have never heard of the old axiom, "If it ain't broke don't fix it". CSI will never be the same, regardless of who they replace Gil with.

This show lost its "luster" a long time ago- many of the actors are also rans, Helgenberger,Eadds, Dourdain,- Only decent ones were Fox, Guilfoyle I could care less if this shows staus on the air

I will be watching up to the time William Peterson leaves and then I am done. I have all the shows recorded from the time it began. No one can fill his shoes. I like Fishburne, he is an excellent actor but he is not a Gil Grissom or CSI material. I predict that the show will last one season.

I don't understand why these actors leave something when it's good. The show will definitely fall. I loved Grissom - without him, I have no interest in the show, especially after killing Ward. What a bummer -- Now what do I watch. CSI - Miami, why does he always down --- no eye contact it bother me to no end. Can't even watch the show. Plus it can't hold a candle to the original Vegas CSI. Grissom, what are you doing?????

I started watching CSI the day it began. I was hooked by the quirk that Grissom brought to the show, I missed him when he was offline for those few episodes, and doubt there can be a replacement to the center he brings the show

As others have said...Grissom's character holds the key to the others. They all revolve around his strengths and weaknesses and without him, they would not play the same.

Petersen set the mold for all the other CSI characters to follow. Without him...there is no show

I feel Gil Grissom has been the heart of this show and when he leaves he takes my heart with him. When you start peeling off main characters right and left like this the original becomes less interesting than the off-shoots it generated. My Thursday nights will be open for the first time in years now.

Without Grissom there is no CSI. Yes, the how is about the crimes and the evidence but without the right characters might as well go watch a true crime show. Every relates to Grissom on the show, he is the humor(dry as it is) and the soul. I relate to him the best and love his view of the "evidence" and not the feelings. He keeps it from being a soap opera like so many other prime time shows. Without Gil I will no longer be a CSI fan and I NEVER thought I would say I would not be a fan. Grissom is the attraction to me, the one character who uses only their brain and not their "movie star" looks.

The jury is out in my book, I actually named my 92 Bronco Grissom and love him to pieces, Laurence Fishburne, no! Kurt Russell Yes, Malkovich, NO! I will watch and judge for myself but it will never be the same without Grissom!!!!!!!!! I've been watching CSI since it first aired on TV. I like Grissom's style and technique for solving crimes. It seems like all the all my favorite shows keep losing their best characters. If Grissom, Dourdan and Fox go, then so does the real CSI. It won't be the same without them.

I will continue to watch until the story lines go downhill. Jorga Fox-glad she is gone. Warrick and Grissom were the heart of this show. If Warrick dies (I believe he did) then that will be Grissom's reason for leaving and that episode will be something to watch. L.Fisbourne coming on will add character to the show. I just hope it lasts. I love CSI and since this is the last year for ER, I need CSI to continue. Criminal Minds and all Law and Orders will be the only shows left for me. Grissom is CSI. He's the only reason why I watch the show. I've established a TV bond with the CSI and the cast. Watching CSI was the highlight of my evening and without Grissom, there is no CSI. Hopefully you'll keep Crime Scene Investigation reruns on the air.

It won`t be the same without him, he was the whole show. I`m a 76 yr old grandmother and I really loved the show. First the director gets killed and then the other guy who was stupid and was doing drugs now Grishom. Every time a show is good they change it. They are changing NCIS too, they are nuts.

I absolutely LOVE Laurence Fishburne in CSI !!!! I love his voice & the way he plays his character. I think it's a super good change for the change. I was getting tired of Grissom's bug thingy, the miniature case & his wishywashy (& sometimes rude) ways. I like CSI more with Mr. Fishburne!!

It's August 2009, we're watching daily doses of CSI: Las Vegas (re-runs on SPIKE TV) thank you very much!
Actually, I hadn't watched any of the CSI series until this summer... Really liked Grissom, and Warrick (I think Warrick was Grissom's favorite CSI, JMHO) Heard that Warrick was shot to death... and Grissom left CSI!!

It will NEVER work without Grissom! Let's not kid ourselves people. Grissom was the HEART & SOUL of the show and many people watched it because of him!

As they say; CSI: Vegas without GIL GRISSOM is like the Culture Club without BOY GEORGE!!!
