I met Isaac several years past while working with a member of his church Alfreddie Johnson and then once again when we were both honored in Clearwater Florida during the Ebony Awakening celebration. Isaac was always gracious although he possessed the statue of an icon. I saw Isaac Hayes in concert at Virginia Tech when I was a sophomore (1971 or '72, time blurs now). His appearance was a source of pride for the few of us Black students (we would become African-Americans, I,reluctantly, later). Hayes came out in a black leotard bottom, shirtless, with a big gold CHAIN (not "chain") criss-crossing his chest! A nubile, bald-headed, Nubian Princess danced around the stage in a one-piece body suit that had all the men in the audience transfixed -- until Ike started to play his soprano sax. I, for one, didn't know beforehand that he could play sax, but he WAILED, and all eyes and ears were on him. About 3 minutes into the set there was a sound system glitch, and the members of the contract string section from the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra looked at each other like it was going to be an early night. But Ike wasn't havin' it. He DEMANDED that someone fix the problem and VOWED to start all over FROM THE VERY BEGINNING! And before he became Black Moses, Hayes parted the Gremlim Sea at Virginia Tech, the sound system was restored (willed not to break again), the Nubian Princess re-created her initial sexy prowl, and Isaac Hayes held forth with hot sax, sensuous piano, and seductive voice so compelling that every man in the joint would no doubt try to bite his style later that night with their dates or late night hookups. I know I did, that night and beyond. Black Moses, YES! Chef, not so much. Isaac Hayes, Damn Right.

When I was young, Isaac Hayes was such a major part of any party my family or family friends threw. It wasn't just the songs he wrote that others sang, it was also songs that became powerful anthems during a time when people of color didn't have many. Shaft was a major event in my neighborhood, everyone went to see it, and everyone owned the soundtrack. Hayes had almost disappeared when South Park asked him if he was willing to do some voice work for them, and then Chef was born. One of the most distinctive African American voices in the world singing "Chocolate Salty Balls" made me laugh so hard I cried. I was disappointed when Hayes stopped working for SP because he was outraged at SP's Scientology satire, the hypocrisy being that he didn't protest when SP took on every other major religion, but it was good while it lasted. A whole different generation was introduced to that brilliant voice. He will be remembered forever. 1st

I met Isaac outside Stax in the 60's, and we talked under the marquee there at the studio. I was there selling them an ad for a Memphis State event program. He was yet to become a household name (or shave his head), but I could tell this guy was something special. Even then he oozed hot buttered soul and had the velvet voice.

I first saw Isaac Hayes perform at the Soul Bowl in Tulane Stadium (New Orleans LA) in 1970. I had actually come to see someone else, and wasn't familiar with Mr Hayes. But after that night....wow. I became a disciple of the Black Moses, and have been so ever since. I have seen him perform live 3 times in New Orleans and live by his music. I was so influenced by him that when I pledged my fraternity in 1977 we wore a robe designed from the Black Moses album cover. My favorite songs include "Never Can Say Goodbye", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Your Love is so Doggone Good". (yes, he did make other songs besides Shaft) I'm gonna miss Ike. Really miss him. I had hoped to meet him in person one day and tell him how much his music has meant to me. Feeling a litte empty now. "I just don't know what to do with myself". Miss him already.

He was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor and he loved the ladies. I learned tonight that our world had lost Isaac Hayes. Of all people in this world to tell us was the one and only BB King in concert at Wolftrap in Vienna, VA. Heaven is rockin tonight ! I just hope he doesn't tell anybody there to "shut your mouth". I also had the pleasure of assisting him in Memphis, Tennessee in 1971 at a department store (Lowensteins) I worked in while at Memphis State University. He had a young woman with him and she shopped in the junior department for two hours. When time came to pay the bill, Mr. Hayes approached the register and paid for her selections. He was kind, generous to a fault and very nice to do business with. A special part for me was I shook his hand and he said thank you for your time. He will be missed.

I can't believe he's gone... I was so looking forward to hearing some more new material from Issac, who was enjoying a bit of an uptick in his career lately, with appearances on Conan O'Brian, playing with the Max Weinberg Seven, which was an phenomenol performance in every way. When I was around 18, I dated an older, and white divorced woman, and she turned me onto Issac's 'Hot Buttered Soul' album, I became an instant fan for life, and played it for all my dates, and true loves thereafter. I noticed everyone else here talks about playing it at parties they atteneded, or threw at home. But, Issac was strictly reserved for my femal conquests, and he said the things I couldn't, and didn't know how to say, (except to mouth along with the record), because I was too shy and backwards. I'm proud to say that never once did his musci ever fail to bring me the desired results that I was looking for when I went parking, or invited one over to my crib for a night of incense, red wine, and whatever else would soon follow. I also used Isssac for my personal crash and burn in all matters of the heart counselor. No one could speak to a guy's hurt and loneliness like Issac Hayes. I feel sorry for young black people today, because they don't have any positive role models who teach love and understanding to their race like Black Moses did in in his entire career. At least not from what I've seen in the last 20 years or so. So, here's a toast to the man who started rap before it was even called rap, gave me comfort and pleasure for 38 years, and was responsible for more babies being conceived than probably any other artist in recording history.

Isaac Hayes was due to headline one of two stages of live entertainment in two weeks (Aug 24/25) at this year's Sunset Junction Street Fair in Los Angeles and alot of people (including me) were really looking forward to hearing him perform live. I'm 34 and I grew up listening to Issac, Teddy Pendergrass and Marvin Gaye in my Mom's house in NYC. It was the most difficult call to make yesterday to tell her that Isaac was gone. We were still coming to grips about Bernie's passing and now this. This is depressing. And I just saw 'Escape from New York' earlier in the week where Isaac played the 'Duke of New York' holding the Prez for ransom. He was a badass in that movie who held his own against fellow badasser Kurt Russell. He also did 'I'm Gonna Git You Sucka' with the Wayans Brothers, which was hilarious as well. We will have his catalog of work as his legacy as well as his work on South Park to make us smile. R.I.P. Issac

Losing the "Black Moses" is and forever will be the biggest loss in the music industry. He broke all kinds of records for "Black Americans" during the early sixties and seventies. I remember waiting in line at the University of Maryland back in the early seventies just to get a good look at what I consider one of the most talented artist around. Not only as a musician but as a writer, composer and actor as well.Once the music started you sat mesmerized and wish that the music would never...............stop. I worked for a bank in Atlanta in the late 80's and I had the pleasure of calling Mr. Hayes one of my customers. He would pull up in his black mercedes and come in to do his banking just like everyone else. He was akways very gracious and friendly. He presented this larger than life persona but his personality downplayed that. I am proud to say I got to meet this wonderful human being, and he will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Hayes!

Its always surprises me to learn that I have connected with someone I have never met to the point that I personally feel the loss of their dying....
So it is for me with both Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac...Ironically, an episode of "The Bernie Mac Show" was aired last week that featured Isiac Hayes as a guest where Bernie spoke to the audience (breaking the 4th wall of tv). It was the one in which Bernie discovers that his niece is secretly playing a guitar and singing in the basement. It was via that segment that I learned that Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac were friends. The shock of his friend's passing may have been a factor in Isaac's untimely dying. New grief sometimes brings on the reoccurance of old grief... The combination can sometimes be too much to bear....For those of us who truly miss these two great talents and human beings, I say, "If you feel like you want cry - and crying is your thing ...CRY ON!"

He would be the star of the shool's talent revue and the students would just go wild. It was from this first small step that he went on to put Memphis on the map. In addition to the cultural contributions Mr. Hayes made to America and the world, what I will take away from my one and only encounter with him is what a genuinely nice person he was.

I ran into him at a COSTCO in East Memphis one afternoon and he was as unpretentious a person as you could ever meet. Too often, successful artists forget that it's the people who appreciate their music/movies/books etc that make it possible for those artists to live their dreams. Mr. Hayes stated this fact to me and, while looking me in the eyes, said thank you to me for allowing him to live his dreams. I will never forget that.

My mother and father took me and my sister to the Starlight theater to see Issac Hays and Dionne Warwick in concert when we were still in grade school. There weren't many kids there and we knew this wasn't a "kid" thing. I remember not completely getting it until years later and when I realized how important it was to my Dad that his kids see the whole world and not just small parts of it and he started with what he knew, soul music and class and went from there. Issac and Dionne were/are amazingly talented examples of both. And for a kid in the 70s seeing Issac Hayes was like swimming in the beauty and gift of being black and coming up out of the water covered in pride. He taught what being "Black and Proud" meant.

That was the late Marvin Gaye singing the anthem. As for Isaac Hayes...he was also a good actor. In my opinion, the best role he played was "The Duke of New York" in Escape From New York.

I was too young to go house parties when Isaac Hayes was enjoying his first heyday, but I still have vivid memories of many of his tunes.

As a city kid, my grandmother would take me to the country (East Texas) every summer.
There, my cousins had all of the latest hits of the day, including those by Isaac Hayes. I will never forget hearing them play "Walk On By"on the record player in 1969. That next summer, they were playing "I Stand Accused". Then, my grandmother took up the slack in '71. She slid across the seat of her sea green Coupe deVille and popped in her 8-track tape of Shaft so that we could be entertained during our yearly East Texas pilgrimage. You read it right. An 8-track tape. Her favorite song was "The Theme from Shaft" but I liked the instrumental tune "Ellie's Love Theme" best. As I reached my teens, I started getting into gospel music, dance music, pop, & disco so I kind of lost touch with deep soul music for a minute. But during the late 80's as I started to get into rap, and some of the better rappers returned me to my soul roots. Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" in '88, DJ Quik's "Born and Raised in Compton" in '92, all of which sampled Hayes' "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" all come to mind.

And let me not forget one of my all time favorite rap songs is the 1991 cut "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me" by the Geto Boys from they sampled Ike's "Hung Up On My Baby".

In the 90's, I got into Electronica/Trip-Hop. Portishead's 1995 "Glory Box" unabashedly sampled the haunting "Ike's Rap II" and is one of the best.

So you see, Ike had a hold on me, no matter what genre of music he popped out of. And he still does. RIP Black Moses.

Isaac was my hero, due to his less than ideal upbringing -- he lost his parents at an early age; and was raised in poverty. You never heard about him getting into any real trouble.... Plus, he was the coolest, whether on film, TV or music!

Rest in peace! Isaac was made an honurable king in Ghana in Africa, in a coastal town called Ada, and use to visit there quite a bit with Steve Wonder. very nice and down to earth. I am sure there is a big show in heaven and God wanted Isaac and Berni Mac to perform!

I am deeply saddened by the loss of entertainers Isaac Hayes and Bernie mac. The world truely will never be quite the same without them both. I remember back in the day when I had heard Barry White's booming voice,(another icon gone on to soul heaven)for the very first time,I had sworn it was Isaac. My condolences go out to both families. P.S. One of my faverites is "Isaac Hayes:Live at the Sahara Tahoe",with one song in perticuclar "Aint no Sunshine"

Isaac Hayes is the brother who put "bald and sexy" on the map! No other brother did bald like him. That was the icing on the cake of all his talents. He was truly and "individual" who did not compromise his style. He will be sorely missed! Heaven is jumping right about now with him, Marvin, Luther, Barry and Gerald. Thank GOD for movies, tapes, cd's and DVD's. They'll be forever with us. R.I.P.

I was blest to grow to appreciate Mr. Hayes when I purchased, by accident, his come-back album with the "Can't let go" cut. I am grateful I learned to really appreciate him beginning there. He was a maestro!

We have had some wonderful people that gave us laughter, and crooned us for our listening purposes. I have to say listening to the music today I definitely can say I have been blessed to have had the experience in growing up to the likes of Mr. Hayes., and laughing my butt off to Mr. Mac. I have both their DVD, and CD collection. I'm gonna miss Mr. Mac saying things I wish I could say, and Mr. Hayes singing songs I wish I could sing. R.I.P. fellows.
