The Shining-

Jack Nicholson's character asks Shelley Duvall's character "How do you like it?" after she discovers that her husband's written work consists entirely of one repeated sentence: all work and no play make jack a dull boy.

The line itself, I guess is not entirely scary, but the scene that kubrick that preceded this line was so full of tension and suspense, that when Jack spoke these words it was like the ultimate emotional release.

Good dialogue, good actors and good special effects are all great assets for horror films to have, but for these to be used for greatest effect, good direction must be present as well.

Not really scary, but definitely you knew that things did not look good for Benicio Del Toro after this one. His character, Jackie Boy, pulls a gun on prostitute Becky (Alexis Bledel) in "Sin City" and she says to him, in the sweetest voice:

Next thing you know, Jackie's head is detached from his body and still talking. I got a little chill from that one, especially coming from my little Rory Gilmore...

The best I can come up with (Aside from all the great one's mentioned) is in Nightmare on Elm Street when Nancy picks up the phone and Freddy croaks "I'm your boyfriend now" and a tongue comes out of the phone. Right after that, Johnny Depp gets swallowed by his posturepedic and regurgitated all over the ceiling.

Not a movie line, but a brilliant scene of tension building was in The Shining, when Danny is riding his big wheel around and all you hear is the drone of the wheels on the wood floor switching to complete silence when he's on the carpet. Amazingly effective.

I have to agree with "The call is coming from inside the house" from When a Stranger Calls. I've never seen that movie, and that line simultaneously is the reason I want to see it and the reason I continue to avoid seeing it. The concept is chilling.

The little boy saying "Redrum redrum redrum!!!" in The Shining sticks in my mind too. I had horrible insomnia as a kid and flicked by several scenes of that movie in the middle of the night when I was 7-or-8ish...when you're little and you stop on a movie because there's a kid in it, hearing him growl out "REDRUM REDRUM!" is not something you get over...especially when it immediately dawns on you what "REDRUM" spelled backwards is.

The other, I have to agree with James from NY, is "I want to know who I'm looking at" from the beginning of Scream. I haven't seen enough horror flicks to be an expert in the genre, but entire opening sequence with Drew Barrymore is one of the scarier things I've ever scene.

It's not a line but there's a truly creepy scene in The Hitcher (1986) that makes my skin crawl. After Jim (C. Thomas Howell) has managed to escape John Ryder (Rutger Hauer) he's later passed on the road by a family in a station wagon and he sees Ryder in the back playing with the family's children. Ryder has this horrible leer on his face and you just know things are not going to end well for that family.
