I myself was extremely skeptical at first about Craig. Had been a Brosnan fan all the way back to the movie Nomads. However - I like Craig as the newest Bond. I cannot agree with your assessment and would not take of your three choices over Craig for future Bond movies.

I would have to put in my vote for Jack Davenport as a possible new Bond. Jack is tall and charming, not entirely foreign to the action genre (see Pirates of the Caribbean movies) where he fenced his way around a wheel in a three-way with Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. He would have to tweak his accent but I vote for Jack Davenport.

I think you are way off base. Daniel Craig is one of the better Bonds in recent years. Casino Royal was probably the best Bond that I have scene. I was skeptical at first, but was won over by the movie and actor after I saw it. Pierce Brosnan and his 3 franchise Bond movies were terrible!! Seriously... watch them again. He "looked" the part, but all of the movies were boring and hokey. The best thing they did was go in a different direction for Casino Royal.

What?! Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Sean Connery (and I would argue he's even better than the original). His Bond has layers... Pierce Brosnan was smarmy and superficial and pretty much killed the Bond franchise with his perfect hair and tailored suits that never got wrinkled or dirty no matter how much he got shot at and rolled on the ground. And seriously, how many bullets did he miraculously dodge using only his ego as a shield? Who could take him seriously? Thankfully, Jason Bourne forced Bond to grow up. I don't agree, unforutnately. Pierce Brosnan was one of the worst Bonds (only George Lazenby was worse), and Daniel Craig is simply great. I'd love to see Cristian Bale as Bond, but he has so many other franchises already, it would be nice to see someone less known get a shot. Don't know Kevin McKidd but will check him out. I can't see Blair Underwood as Bond at all. He hasn't impressed me on DSM at all, but that may be the writing rather than his acting ability. Ewan MacGregor would be fun to watch as Bond. As an avid Bond fan, I have to admit, I was not that into Craig when he was announced to take over the role. We have to remember, it's the director that determines how Bond's character is protrayed, not so much the actor. But, after I saw "Casino" I thought they did a bang up job. As you said, he's a little rough around the edges, but I think that it comes across as more passionate. "Casino" took us back to how Bond became a "00". It's supposed to give us that dark and mysterious feeling.
As for the three you suggested to replace him, you only have one legit option. Bale. The other two would never make it to the casting call based on one small detail...they are not British actors. The aficionado's would never allow a non-Brit to play the International Spy. It was hard enough to allow there to be a Blond-Bond, let alone an American one.

I, like you, was skeptical of Craig playing Bond but after I saw "Casino" I understood why they would select Daniel Craig. I think the thing that escapes you is that the "Bond" Daniel Craig is playing is not yet the "dashing agent" that is played by Brosnan. The Bond story line has reverted to the beginning. In this series JB is not the suave, debonair, smooth 007 we have all grown up with. He is a new agent; rough and unrefined just as Fleming portrayed him in his first few novels. Fleming even described Bond as “an anonymous, blunt instrument” in an interview with Reader’s Digest.

Hugh Jackman, in my opinion, would make an ideal bond. He's a little more on the "gritty" side, but can also clean up pretty well. When I heard they were going to replace Brosnan, rumor had it that they wanted someone more from the cut of Sean Connery - a bit more hard-edged, and someone that didn't mind getting their hands dirty in a fight. I haven't seen 'Casino Royale' in spite of the fact that it's been playing on one of my movie channels, and I really have no interest in seeing 'Quantum of Solace'. Craig just doesn't evoke "Bond" anywhere in my taste for this exceptional series of movies.

I was skeptical when Daniel Craig was chosen, but I think he's the best Bond since Sean Connery. Moore was too suave, and while Brosnan was a bit more menacing at times, neither embodied the cold-blooded killer you'd expect a "double-0" to have to be. Craig could be accused of being a bit too robotic but I think he nailed the part.

"Casino Royale" did a lot to reinvigorate the franchise in my opinion. Without the breathtaking change in the Bond character and the film's tone, I think the series could have withered and died.

As for future Bonds, before Craig was named as the new 007 Hugh Jackman's name was kicked around. I think he'd make a good Bond and we know he has some good acting chops.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Connery. He gets the ruthless spy that Ian Fleming wrote about. Bond in the novels was brutal and edgily charming, which Craig pulls off.
That said, if he had to be replaced, Christian Bale would be perfect - and it would be nice to see him in a major role with his native accent. He's got the talent, the look, and would bring a different gravitas to the brutal/charming mix that is so hard to get right.

Clive Owen is another good choice, would be a throwback to the "suave", Bond, not as dangerous, but a great ladykiller.

There aren't too many truly talented actors that could take this role to a level beyond Craig, he's brought real talent to a role that became almost a parody and made it real again. Most of the actors these days are pretty boys who need strong direction.

I used to think that Timothy Dalton was the worst Bond actor - until I saw Pierce Brosnan. Not sure if it was him or the writing, but the Brosnan Bond films were horrible. Brosnan looked the part, but something was lost when he tried to act the part. The slightly wicked-naughty, tongue-in-cheek, wink-your-eye flirtiness that Connery and Moore had was missing. He took himself too seriously. Daniel Craig is a definite step in the right direction. But we'll never get back to the good old days of Bond, though. For one, the Cold War is over and you just can't replace that good guy vs. bad guy vibe that existed during the Cold War (the same could be said about the Olympics). And secondly, Bond has become too politically correct. Gone are the days when he slapped women on the behind and dragged them off to his room. Political correctness has ruined the essence of James Bond. If you want a Bond that emulates Roger Moore's performance, go with a Ewan McGregor-type actor. If you want a Sean Connery, go with Ralph Feinnes or Jude Law. If you want Brosnan, go with Bale.

Craig's portrayal of bond is very reminiscent of Sean Connery's early bond films. This new bond also seems to fit Flemings idea of what bond is like. Of course, Blair Underwood would make an incredible James Bond. But, the film industry is still too stuck in the 1940s to ever attempt this move. The film industry is run by white men who have always been fearful of talented, intelligent, goodlooking, and tall black men (all of which Blair is) unless of course, they play the humble card (which of course Blair doesn't) Secondly, film producers still say that their foreign markets will not go for a black man sleeping with a white woman. Thirdly, they will pretend that if they cast a black woman as the Bond Girl, that will make it a black film and that will curtail their audience numbers, especially in foreign countries. It's not mistake that Wesley Snipes had to walk off into the sunset under an umbrella with his leading lady on most films instead of actually touching, kissing, and dare I say, sleeping with her. Even Will Smith hasn't arrived at the beyond black status in films that Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and now President Elect Barack Obama has. Of course, Daniel Craig was a minor character in many films of the past. So, just as we have minor characters who have run this country, perhaps the film making industry will do the right thing for the Bond character as the country did for the presidency. Sorry to say, but I think you are incorrect about Criag vs Brosnan.... the latter just didn't cut it in my opinion... not believable enough. As for Craig, he makes it seem palatable and exciting. The 007 franchise needs continuity, in that I mean if we have a different Bond every movie it destroys the attachment that Bond develope with the actor. Daniel Craig is in my opinion the best Bond since Connery. Connery was great and he is a Huge reason the franchise took off like it did to continue to this day. Craig has been an excellent choice to continue Bond. The next Bond that might be good is "MARTIN CSOKAS". He's a New Zealander and you'd recognize him as a Treadstone Op that Jason Bourne fights in the guys kitchen in The Bourne Supremacy. He also played the Lord of Lothlorien in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. When the Fellowship meets Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Martin Csokas is the man with her, her husband.
Anyway, he has a great style and look for Bond and looked good in the action sequence in the Bourne Supremacy. Look him up.

I don't get how people think that Craig's Bond is so much more layered, more complex more this, more that, and that the other great Bond actors brought less to the character.

Remember, Casino Royale is THE FIRST BOND INSTALLMENT. The writers of James Bond's story through the years have developed the Bond character as maturing beyond his first foray into double-O status. He's more emotional and complex because he's green, he's a nubie, he's not clear on what it is to be a double-O. Recall in Casino Royale he had quit, fallen in love, and got burned. THAT is in part why he'd never fall in love again, why Bond became harder, more of a player, with less stake in "the real world"... don't blame the actors for playing the role as it was - understand the role. Craig benefits from playing a Bond we've never known on film, a new Bond, a young Bond, an inexperienced Bond. The polish of later Bonds are on purpose.

I'd vote for Kevin McKidd. You would have to see his full body of work to appreciate his talents. He can be the badass, but he can also be humorous, tender, and sophisticated. And he is not too old. He is only 35. Daniel Craig is older.

My second vote would go for Clive Owen (who is older than McKidd). I have watched every movie and series that Owen has been in and he is fabulous. Very talented and I have pictured him in the role of Bond many times.

Probably my third vote would go for Stephen Moyer of TrueBlood. He is a fabulous actor and another Brit. I think he could combine the right mix of sophistication and agression to be the perfect Bond.

I do like Daniel Craig, but I find his performance as Bond a little flat. Craig is a fine actor, but just not as Bond. He lacks humor. Fab body though!

I have seen all the actors who have played Bond, and I like this version better, because seriously no one acts that charming and get's the girl. The way Craig acted like an arse at the beginning was really how you get into a girls pants. And let's face it, none of the other actors got near what a former SAS Op would look like, or act like, or be trained to do.

Keep in mind the SAS were where we based our Delta Force on. Craig is a lot better and Brosnan may look good to women but Craig is a Man's man.

Daniel Craig is a joke. He brings absolutely nothing to the franchise. Assumptions of him being responsible for Bond's actual human side are flawwed. Bond's character is played out as the part is written. Bond is human and emotional(in Casino Royale and Q.O.S.) because these are the early years of Bond, and not due to the quality of the actor. Craig is a boring, dry character with no charisma on screen. I will concede that Craig has played the part of James Bond better than Roger Moore and Lazenby, but he falls short of Pierce and Sean in every aspect. I hope Q.O.S. is a vast improvement over Craigs first attempt, but I'm skeptical at best. I hope he's gone after this movie. Get a competent actor in there with some real screen experience, who can actually entertain an audience.

Crazy to me that people dis Craig as Bond while admitting they've not seen 'Casino Royale' and don't plan to see 'Quantam of Solace.' If you haven't seen him in the role, how can you make a judgment??? Craig is great - my husband, who is a huge Bond fan and has read the books, says he's closer to the Bond Ian Fleming created than anyone. That being said, I would definitely watch Hugh Jackman as Bond! Definitely!!

The very best James Bond hasn't even been mentioned - Sir David Niven. The original movie version of Casino Royale pretty much stank, but Niven was great. Sean in second, George in third. A good fit for a younger, retooled Bond cannot be refined or too witty - destroys the character's development. Thr problem is that even with 3-4 picture deals, the days of Connery and Moore are long gone. Daniel can handle the franchise for now - and hopefully, when he hands over the role, there will be a early to mid 30 something actor out there who can bridge the gap between Daniel Craig to Sean Connery (who could make a great cameo aka David Niven in Casino Royale - heck, stick them all in there!).

Since you blog on a pop culture website, and your masthead proclaims that you are "Channeling the world of TV, Film, The Internet and More..." I must assume that you have never read a book.

Go to your local library, (it's that big ugly building downtown with all the books in it), and check out "Casino Royale". The novel by Ian Fleming, not any of the movies. Read it. After you have finished it, return to the library and check out each of the other Bond novels and read them. Then start watching the movies. Start with "Dr. No" and watch each in chronological order.

By the time you get to the new "Casino Royal", (there were three - yes, three), I am sure you will agree that Daniel Craig in attitude, physicality, and intellect, if not looks, comes the closest to what Fleming had in mind when he created the character. After all, Fleming said that Bond looked a little like Hoagy Carmichael! (Google him).

Anyway, your choices are equal in their suckitude. Daniel Craig is perfect. How about writing some more about Paris and Britney, and leaving Bond to the professionals.

Unlike a lot of other posters, I absolutely adored Pierce Brosnan as Bond and was mortified when I learned he was being replaced. Goldeneye is one of my favorite Bond films (it didn't hurt that Sean Bean was in the movie either). I was very skeptical about Craig coming in, but I was VERY pleasantly suprised. I thoroughly enjoyed Casino Royale. The one thing I can't figure out in these movies his how Judi Dench's character slips in and out of the 007 time line. I know I am not the only one bothered by the fact that she was M to Pierce Brosnan AND to Daniel Craig's Bond... and Craig's films are supposed to be Bond in his early days. But whatever... I hope they don't replace him anytime soon.

Everyone on here who thinks Daniel Craig is great are fooling themselves. He may be a good action movie actor, but James Bond is more than that... he's got to be sophisticated too which Craig cannot pull off.

I think Jude Law + 30 pounds would be an interesting choice... he can totally pull off the attitude, wittyness, and sophistication, but he needs to bulk up to be believable in action scenes.

Clive Owen is an interesting possibility, too.

So, my first question to everyone making comments on the best actors to play Bond is: Have you READ the BOOKS? One of the downfalls of the movie series is that by the time they finished the screenplays, very little of the actual Fleming plot or style was left. Connery's Bond WAS Bond, for the first 4 movies. You Only Live Twice began the slow slide into outlandish villians and cartoonish plots. Lazenby was actually an excellent replacement, like Connery, not afraid to get physical or dirty. OHMSS was also one of the few movies to retain the plot from the book (and it's one of the best books). Wish Connery would have stayed for this picture, but Lazenby filled the role admirably. Connery didn't even look the same when he returned for Diamonds are Forever.

Moore? Completely Laughable, with the exception of For Your Eyes Only. He changed vital aspects of Bond's character and truly turned him into an invincible cartoon.

Dalton tried to return Bond to his 'serious' roots. I think his Bond suffered most from not getting a decent script, rather than anything particularly wrong with the actor.

Honestly, I'd been rooting for Brosnan to take over the role since his Remington Steele days, and was glad to see him finally get it. Goldeneye was a great original story and he had a great take on the character at the time, but his three follow up movies were terrible. Again, I don't blame him, but the material he was given to work with. Die Another Day is completely unwatchable. The turnover of the "Q" role from Desmond Lewellyn to John Cleese are the only reason to watch TWINE and DAD.

I was EXTREMELY skeptical when I heard they were replacing Bond yet again for Casino Royale. Since first reading the book years ago, I've been waiting for a serious movie and glad they finally got around to it. So I was watching very closely looking for every reason to tear it apart.

And you know what? I couldn't. Craig actually makes the best Bond since Connery (and in some cases, better, because the screenplay allowed for a harder-edged Bond, like the books). He stayed true to the character as Fleming wrote him. And even the element of the script that were updated from the 60's to the modern day were handled very well. I was very happy to see the torture scene pretty much as Fleming wrote it. The only gripe I really have is that Bond is playing, of all things, Texas Hold 'Em instead of Baccarat. Like Moore's Bond smoking cigars instead of Morelands, I consider this character assasination.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing Craig play the role for quite some time, as long as the screenplays live up to the character. I almost they'd start over and do the books in the order they were written, so we can see the character evolve as Fleming intended him to.

I wasn't a huge Brosnan fan, but Daniel Craig seems so stiff to me. And while I get they're trying to modernize the franchise, I'm nothing short of irate that they're making a sequel instead of another stand-alone Bond film. This is the path that leads us to disasters like the latest Indiana Jones and classics getting ruined.
While it might be okay for new views, the tried and true fans just feel abused.

Clive Owens, hands down.... should be the next Bond. He has that "something" that all screen assassins need to display, as he proved it in the Bourne identity. He is cool headed, sharp, logical, and to the point ( or target ). Fit him with an Aston Martin, an Omega watch and a laser pointer that burns through metal.... and you got the perfect James Bond!!!.

Without question they should have picked either Hugh Jackman or Clive Owen. They are both excellant actors and can bring in the dough with their talent no doubt. Anyone who says that Craig is the best bond, is obviously too young to have seen Moore or Connery. (I am 41) Bronson has been the only bond by far since the two men I just mentioned who kept the franchise classy and respectible. Last, as a black man who would love to see a brotha play bond, I like Underwood but not as bond. His "dirty, sexy' character is perfect though.

Some interesting choices suggested but I can't believe no one at least mentioned Jake Gyllenhal (sp?). He's a little on the young side but by now is old enough to pull it off, I think. But I'm more with those above who agree that Daniel Craig is a very good Bond. As for Sean Connery, yes, he was the ultimate, but time doesn't stand still....

I'm sorry, but your suggestions are atrocious. It just proves you see Bond as eye candy and nothing more. The most successful Bonds always seemed to have more under the surface, that sense of mystery saying we never really know him completely, and none of your guys would bring that to the Bond table. You didn't like Craig for the exact reason I didn't like your boy McKidd's hellish "Made of Honor" -- neither of us wanted to going in.

Actually, I never liked Brosnan in the role. He's just not physically imposing enough to be believable in all the fights. Plus he's too upper class, no matter how "naughty" he tries to be. I think Craig is the first Bond to bring back the "lower class raised on the mean streets of the East End" feeling that Connery always exuded. Sure, Bond has been educated, sophisticated, etc. as part of his training, but that undercurrent of tough lower class bully must be there. Also he has the physique to make his fighting believable. I like the fact that he's not overly handsome. Another problem I had with Brosnan is that he's too handsome, no matter how he may grimace. Roger Moore had the same problems as Brosnan, too handsome and too skinny. I agree that Christian Bale could take over the part when he gets a little older. Bond is always 40-something.

None of the above. Brosnan was great in his own way (and my favorite). Craig is great in his own way (and ended my skepticism of him). But the next bond shouldn't come out of the standard pack of actors in Hollywood. He should be a relative unknown Brit actor with some acting experience but enough mystery that he can define the role himself. Of course, he'll be typecast for life, but those are the breaks.

As a huge fan and collector of James Bond memorabilia, I've enjoyed 007 since the beginning. Each actor who portrayes him adds a bit of their own character. Need I say, just read the Ian Fleming books and you will find that the part was actually written with David Niven, in mind!!!! Although he was Bond, in the original spoof, Casino Royale, he actually played the part the way Fleming wrote it!

Connery was first (even though Barry Newman) played bond on TV in 1954, and was very distinctive and blessed with good scripts. He is the definitive Bond!

Lasenby, Moore, Dalton & Brosnan all were good at keeping the character alive even though he started to slip. None of them were unbelievable as Bond....
Craig shows a grittier side of Bond that is much to form in today's society.....he wouldn't have succeeded back than, as he does now.

Daniel Craig is a fine Bond and one that makes moviegoers fork out the bucks to see him behind the wheel of another Aston Martin....
Long live Daniel Craig....Long live James Bond.

I think that Craig TRULY fits the mold of how James Bond was actually envisioned by Ian Fleming. (Also, Craig is a damn good actor!) Bond was written as a spy with somewhat of a dark side. He was smooth and seductive because, with how he was written, he was attractive, but not in a pretty boy way like Brosnan. I think the choices in this article are ok to poor at best (except Blair Underwood. WTF?!)

If you absolutely HAD to replace Daniel Craig, I would suggest Gerard Butler or Clive Owens would get my vote. Bale is a good actor but doesn't quite fit as Bond.

Half way through this, I said to myself, "Did a woman write this?" And then, without looking at the by-line, I read on to see the recommendation of a Grey's Anatomy supporting stiff and I then my theory was confirmed. I think you may need to do a little more homework, Moneypenny, before you start casting the next Bond. Craig has it down, and like so many other posters have said, he brings a freshness to the role that hasn't been seen since George Lazenby. Yeah, I said it! Watch "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" - it's THE most underrated Bond flick and it has the most in common with Craig's portrayal and the current storyline.

Realistically speaking, none of the actors cast so far, in the role of James Bond actually look the part. All of them prior to Daniel Craig were far too handsome, some almost ridiculously so. The novel Bond's tall, somewhat thin frame, sandy brown hair, anonymous looks, and impeccable charm made him a versatile, and oh so very deadly agent of HM Secret Service. I liked Sean Connery in the role, but Daniel Craig, except for being a tad on the short side, is closer to Ian Fleming's 007, even down to his slightly large nose. The model for James Bond was Fleming himself.

Well after reading Daniel Craig saying its time for a Black 007, I have to agree. I can see Blair Underwood or Cuba Gooding Jr., but who I'd really like to see would be Chiwetel Ejiofor. To be honest when Sean Connery left as Bond I stopped watching the 007 movies. I saw Conney as Bond, the REAL James Bond. He was made for that role; the others were just "eh, he's ok". As for Craig I have no idea how he ever got the role I saw "Casino" with him--actually I was draged to see it by 4 of my friends--and it was all I could do to not walk out of the theatre. I mean he STINKS!!! He's boring, no action, no nothing; he's even worse than Brosnan and he was bad enough. When Sean Connery left the 007 serries, that should have been it Sean Connery will always be the ONE James Bond.

James Bond has to be able to do two things. Both, not either/or:

1. Look like he was born to wear a Savile Row suit or a tux
2. Be convincing in a fight; not a gunfight, a fistfight.

Failure to do either should disqualify actors from consideration.

Brosnan and Moore could do #1, but were utter failures at #2. Connery nailed both. Lazenby looked sloppy in a suit. Dalton pulled off both, but couldn't act. Craig does quite well at each.

When Brosnan was first hired, I was convinced it was a mistake, that they should have hired Adrian Paul. I still think he'd be perfect for the role, though it's likely Craig's for as long as he wants.

James bond is not supposed to appeal to actual situations. That being said, Brosnan fit the part probably the best of any bonds (though I am a moore fan). Craig took all the things that made bond; the vodka martini (shaken not stirred), the invisible cars, the watches, bullet proof cars, and being an all around gentleman. For me that just ruined the bond series until it goeas back to normal. Ohh and the removal of the Q role,(now R), dealt a major blow in my mind. No matter who the nest bond is, as long as he turns back into the old bond that we all know and love, I think it will be for the better.
