I own the DVD and watch it througout the year. "The old man worked in profanities like some artists worked in oils" or something to that effect. Charlie Brown, The Grinch the animated and, I know I am in the minority here, the Jim Carrey versions. Christmas Vacation when Eddie kidnaps Clark's boss and the squirell attack...classic movie making. George C. Scott in 'A Christmas Carol', what range that man had, truly a well done productions. 'Scrooged' with Bill Murray. 'The Santa Clause' with that guy from Tool Time... 'Santa Claus The Movie' with John Lithgow and Dudley Moore, horrible acting, bad script, bad camera work, horrible child actors that make me wanna puke, but I can't turn it off if it comes on... oh, and BTW I am a Pagan, and don't celebrate this holiday, you do the math on that one LOL! I found it on VHS several years ago and it is hysterical. "WC Fields" as Scrooge, "Paul Lynde & Edith Bunker" as the Cratchits and "Peter Sellers" as the clumsy Ghost of Christmases Yet to Come. Anyone alive and aware in the 70's should check it out if they can find it!

Best Christmas specials: Heat Miser! I just loved the Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane). Sometimes Scrooge really did just need a good smack upside the head.
Beyond that, my husband and I have and unusual tradition of watching "The Wizard of OZ" on Christmas eve. He grew up in Brazil and apparently as much as "A Christmas Story" is shown in marathons up here, "The Wizard of Oz" is shown down there.
And last but certainly not least, "It's a Wonderful Life". That has been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. And my other brother-in-law (the one who doesn't look like Ralphie) knows the whole script by heart. One year the power went out while we were in the middle of watching, and he just picked up were it stopped, and we finished the night listening to him with our eyes closed, watching those memorable seens go by in our heads. Plus, I got my first kiss while watching that movie, so as you can tell it holds a lot of good memories for me.

Best Christmas specials: Heat Miser! Scott is a longtime favorite of mine. When Scott's Ebeneezer Scrooge has his change of heart, it always puts tears in my eyes. It is the best Peanuts cartoon. The music and the story. It's just perfect. Also, A Christmas Story with Ralphie and his family. They are hilarious and thank goodness they play it on TNT. I love all the Christmas cartoons they play on Fox Family. They are some oldies but goodies. Rudolph, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman, The Grinch, etc. And somebody mentioned Nestor the donkey. That is a sad but sweet cartoon. I also love this one Xmas special they played only on Directv about a year ago. It's called The First Noel and Andy Griffith is the narrator. I wish they would play it on the other channels. It was always a special night when these were broadcast, because it was only once during the season and you only had that one chance to see it. If you missed it, it meant you had to wait til next year. And equally as memorable were the commercials/sponsors of many of them! Who can forget that Charlie Brown was brought to us by "Dolly Madison" and who among us can't picture Santa sledding down the hill on a shaver from "Noelco" during Rudolph? Those were magical nights fondly remembered by this nearly 50-year old. They've lost their magic in today's multiple broadcast, DVD buying viewers, but once they're on the screen, I am transposed to that simpler, more magical time.

Best Christmas specials: Heat Miser! Both of those mean it's Christmas.

But I also have a radio favorite that I haven't been able to find in years. "Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols" was broadcast live from Kings College in Cambridge. I could just envision the choirmaster tapping the lucky soloist on the shoulder, signifying he got to sing the opening solo: "Once in Royal David's City." Anyone know why NPR doesn't broadcast it anymore?

Best Christmas specials: Heat Miser! The boy and his donkey experience quite a few harrowing moments.
