I miss the Norelco ad and the Folgers commercial too. I remember an add about Chex mix and it had Vera from Alice (I think) narrating a poem (the night before christmas-type poem) and a bowl of chex mix going empty. That was a nice, simple one. At least the Campbell's Soup ad with the snowman coming in from the cold still plays. Plus the Hershey's kisses playing We Wish You a Merry Christmas is another favorite.

I agree wholeheartedly. I hate most coomercials but the ones that are rolled out during the holidays are the worst. that's why I love my Tivo, I don't have to sit through the insipid comercials that insult my inteligence.
Maybe I'm just not as easily swayed as others, but a comercial has never, I repeat never, made me want to go out and buy a product.

When I was little I loved the commercial with Peter sneaking in to make the coffee - and as I got older I realized what a wonderful fallacy it was. There's NO WAY I could sneak into our house like that. My mother has radar when it comes to doors opening. Probably from my teenage years. *cough*
I also love the Norelco Santa although I had a slightly different version in my head...was there another one around the early 80's that was popular? This is going to bug me all day.
Oh and I HATE the Jared commercials (how come we always forget them before your summer commercial contest Gael?) The very insinuation that all women want diamonds and the only worthwhile man is one that will get you expensive jewelry just drives me NUTS. (then again we've also got a local jewelry store with a sign that says "Guaranteed Monogamy for only $300something" to sell one of their diamonds so apparently this is a common and insulting trend)

Publix always has great Christmas commercials; this year I have seen a repeat of the young doctor in a new city who is missing his family at Christmas. He comes off a long shift and calls his mom to wish her a Merry Christmas and while he talks to her, you see her buzzing around the kitchen preparing a holiday feast. (With Publix food, of course) You also see other family members milling around. When he gets to his apartment, he calls her back and asks her to say Merry Christmas to everyone....lo and behold, he opens his door, phone still to his ear and there stands his whole family...It tugs at my heart everytime! I also love the commercial with the young guy shopping for his mom, debating on what to get her...he is thinking about a little crystal turtle, but decides what she would really like is to see him in a suit. He walks into the house and she hugs him and pulls off the tag in the back. That one is great!

I hate the ones that change the words to songs such as "Happy Honda Days" and there is one out that is messing around with the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah (technically an Easter song not a Christmas song).

There are a couple of cute ones with Santa Claus out now. One is for car insurance (I think) and has him with a dog with reindeer antlers. Another has Santa on the beach. I wish the beer company would put out their annual Clydsdale commercial for Christmas. Those are usually very beautiful.

Just how old is the Campbell's soup commercial where the boy comes inside as a snowman and slowly melts into a precious freckle-faced kid as he starts to east Campbell's tomato soup??? The kid must have graudtaed from college by now (...and Campbell's surely helped him through as the commercial is STILL ON!!)

I truly dislike the commercial where the lady is making gingerbread cookies and her friends come over and ask about the scent...a candle that's on the table. The gingerbread man starts to say that it's a Glade candle..and then she bites his head off?!?! What??...and then they cut to a shot of a plate full of decapitated gingerbread men? That's jacked up as far as I can tell.

I must 100% agree with the "He went to Jared". I find those ads so completely obnoxious. As a female, I am kind of offended that women are painted the way they are in the ads, but I can't help but wonder if that is actually reality.

I remember a Radio Shack ad that nobody else does. A car broke down on a snowy road and a wife was yelling at her husband for getting her a waffle iron instead of a cell phone. So, she pretended to call for help on her waffle iron. That was great!

I always like the Budweiser ads (the ones with the animals, anyway), so I'm glad they recycle these. Honestly, nothing else comes to mind this year as a standout, which is really sad, since competition is pretty high for everyone's bucks. There are a lot of very unappealing ads on these days, but that one surpasses all the others in annoyablity (a word?!!), ugliness, and offensiveness. ENOUGH ALREADY! I can't stand commercials any other time of the year and happily zip right past them while watching a recorded program on our DVR. But during the holidays my wife and I like to watch them, since sometimes there are a few gems. I think it is true as you've observed that the really good ones are becoming scarce.

The oldies are usually the goodies, and companies seem to still be capitalizing on that. One of my favorites for M&Ms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knidq8QClHw) is still being shown on TV during the holidays and I know that thing is several years old.

There's another one I still see on TV and love it everytime and it almost mists me up sometimes; the ad is so old that I remember seeing it as a child, so it always reminds me of the happy holidays of my youth. It's the Hershey's Kisses ad with the kisses ringing like bells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-lxFDVvmUk) while in the shape of a Christmas tree.

So in an attempt to recover the man points I just lost by admitting to almost misting up at a commercial, my final submission is one that never fails to make me laugh out loud. It was quickly yanked off the air due to the fact that it's pretty classless, but that didn't stop it from becoming an underground classic. The ready-to-bake cookie commercial where the little boy catches his father eating the cookies for Santa. Perfect set up for this product.

The NFL commercial where the guy gets a paper cut opening his Christmas present and a close up reveals he bleeds green and gold. As a Packer fan I can totally relate.

My favorites from the past include the one of Santa sledding on the head of a Norelco shaver, the Folgers coffee commercial, the Campbell's soup commercial where the snowman melts into a little boy, and any tacky (good tacky) Chia pet commercial.

Commercials I dislike:

"He went to Jared" If I were to get engaged I wouldn't go to Jared even if they were giving out rings. The women in this commercial are obnoxious, texting each other while the other women is at the dinner while her boyfriend's proposing. Tacky (bad tacky)!

The Jane Seymour commercial when she is hawking her open heart necklace. Is it me or does she seem extremely full of herself in this commercial. "I want this symbol to become a worldwide symbol of blah, blah, blah." Get over yourself. It's just a peice of jewelry.

The phone commercial with Santa as the hip new "call me Klaus" guy. Santa looks rather creepy with his makeover.

The Jared ad with the psycho GPS unit is way creepier than the gal-pals. But what's really annoying about this season's jewelry ads is the phrase "Like her, only gold is treasured." Who thought that one up? And it's turned up in ads for both Jared and Kay so unless they have common ownership there's something else at work here.

Always annoying: ads for lame games you don't see any other time of the year. Adults playing Pictionary by drawing on a doughboy? Give me a break!

Questionable annual trend: uptick in booze ads (though they're usually good commercials).

Mostly good car ad: Santa in a welding hood, by Mercedes. (Though that toy soldier gives even adults the creeps.)

I'm with you on the "Jared" commercials. I also hate the cell phone commercial now that depicts an OVER dramatization of a women who trying to find love and unlimited text. It irritates the heck out of me.
As for the unforgettable Holiday commercial of the year I would have to say the one with the Dr.? calling home to talk to his family while he is stuck at work and then when he gets home he is surprised by all his family in his apartment getting ready to celebrate. I like that one. Have no idea what it is advertising.
On another note, there is a commercial on right now for a laptop. I don't know if it is the colors in the commercial or the song "I am green today, I chirp with joy like a crickets song" but no matter what my two year old is doing when it comes on he goes into a trans and stares at the TV until it is over then he goes right back to what he was doing. It's hilarious.

Also annoying are the Target commercials. Primarily, because there are more than one and therefore a lot of money was spent. Better to have 1 annoying commercial and use the money to lower prices.
In the Old Navy commercial, all I see is 'i want, what i want' and it comes off as greedy.

Yeah, holiday ads are junk. I also dislike the ones for luxury cars....the people who can afford to give those as gifts don't need an ad to prompt them to do it.

My favorite holiday ad has been Discovery Channel's "Give Turkey The Bird" promo for their "Deadliest Catch" marathon on Thanskgiving. Although that's no surprise, since they created that fabulous "Boom Di Ada" ad that we all love.

The "Back to School" Staples commercial where the dad is prancing and riding the shopping cart down the school supplies aisle. His two kids have totally depressed faces because they know that, soon, school is back. Music in the background is "It's the most wonderful time of the year". When this song is played on the radio around Christmas, I can't help but laugh at that commercial.

Jareds is lame. Yeah, I know the name but I'll refuse to go into their store.

I don't like Kay's Jewelry commercials but the one with the deaf girl is really cute. He gives her some jewelry and asks if she likes it and she signs back "read my lips" and they kiss. Thoughtful.

I also love the classic Honey Nut Cheerios commercial with the bee offering Eberneezer Scrooge some of his cereal, and getting a smile out of him, and the bee tells him Merry Christmas. It was done with two different bee voice actors, and both versions just warm the heart.

I also love the classic McDonalds commercial from the mid-80s or so with Ronald McDonale ice skating with the little girl. Beautiful commercial.

Ah, I forgot the M&M's commercial where the red M&M and Santa see each other and are so shocked that each other really exists that they faint. It's so silly, but it cracks me up every time.

Locally, I've also really loved the Empire carpet commercial ad they've run for years with the Empire guy and a bunch of co-stars in Santa suits doing a commercial jingle to "Deck the Halls". It's years old, but it's still a classic. "588-23 ho ho!"

I love the commercial where the parents find a car, huge gifts, etc. under the tree, and ask the kids, "What kind of cookies did you LEAVE for Santa?" and the little girl answers, "We didn't give him cookies....we gave him CHEESE!"

Also, my all time favorite is the Hershey Kisses bell-ringers, where the last little guy wipes his brow with his paper tab. Classic!

And yes, Peter making Folgers (my son's name is Peter) always, always makes me cry.

I think the Santa/M&Ms commercial is so cute. Makes me laugh every time!

In my area there is one for Publix where the son is in med school and cant get home for Christmas. As hes headed to his apt, he is calling his family to wish them "Merry Christmas." When he opens the door, they are all in his apt! I choke up every time.
