In my book Casablanca beats them all! What a classic ... the dialogues, the setting, the story, the acting, the score, the romantic atmosphere, no other one can beat it. That film has it all!! After that, I agree with all the names in your list, all great films.

Crash and The Departed were the worst winners. The Departed was a remake that was incredibly inferior to the original (Infernal Affairs) and Crash was an outright inaccurate portrayal of racism.

Let’s hope this year the Academy picks a movie that is more deserving.

As you can tell, I'm not a big fan of really depressing but excellent films. The closest to depressing I have here is "Cuckoo's Nest," and it had a pretty depressing ending. But on the whole, I like to feel half-way happy when I come out of a theater.

I think West Side Story is totally over-rated.The lead character of Natalie Wood as Maria is completely miscast, and Richard Tamblin as Tony has no charisma as Tony.The music and dance numbers are great, as is the incomparable Rita Moreno as Anita, but I don't think this film deserved an Oscar.

- Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
- The Searchers
- Bonnie and Clyde
- There Will Be Blood
- Munich

Incidentally, Munich was the year of the Crash/Brokeback Mountain issue, which I think was misguided to begin with. Crash didn't deserve to win, but neither did Brokeback and of the two the better one won, even though Crash was only the fourth best of the five nominees. There was a powerful movie hidden behind the "art" in Brokeback, and there was a powerful movie hidden behind the sanctimony in Crash. All three of the other nominees were more subtle and deserving of the award than either of those two, in my opinion.
