Even Jack, Kate, or Sawyer could leave and the show would limp on, but without Locke, it's all over. I think that Locke/Ben will be there locked in a mortal struggle until the final episode when the volcano erupts and the 815-ers escape.

In the interim....is Ben's TRUE MOTIVATION to stay on the island and reunite with his MOTHER? What Locke shares with the children (like Walt) is an OPEN MIND, enabling him to communicate with whatever the cloud/spirit is on the island.

Is the cloud/spirit trying to use The Others to escape the island?

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Lost will lose millions of more viewers if they kill off Locke. He IS this show. He's a balance of everything that's going on at the island. Good versus bad. Strength versus weakness. The group versus the loner. Faith versus reason. I'd be very upset if he is dead, and this is coming from someone who has stood by this show through all the criticism, although I am intrigued where it would go from here if he is dead. But I think the fact that "Jacob" allegedly said "help me" shows that Locke isn't dead and he at least needs to figure out Jacob, if not himself or the island. Oh, and what was that powder surrounding Jacob's place? Gunpowder? Some voodoo thing? Strange. Probably figure it out in season 5 or something.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I agree, if Locke is dead the show will lose some appeal. Locke's ability to act deliberately and with certainty is appealing in that he doesn't hold back or waiver much without thought. But Ben seeing his dead mother reminds me of the old theory out there that everyone on the island is in purgatory. Maybe that's why the girl from the helicopter insists the rest of the world considers them dead as they've found the plane.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Seeing as how the bite from his dad healed on his hand almost instantly, and he could walk once he got on the island, it's going to take more than a simple gunshot to kill Locke aka Wolverine.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

He'll (LOCKE) be baaaaaaaaaaack .Count on it,sooner or later. If the island healed his broken back ,why can't it heal a gunshot also ??

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Somehow I always seem to agree with you! Ben demonstrated the same failing most major antagonists (?) have: not seeing their 'mortally wounded' nemesis finally snuffed out. I think it's an interesting way they're played off each other now.. Ben almost like a false prophet, for lack of a better word, when compared to Locke's own ability. So the 'help me' is a plea from Jacob to... free the Others from Ben's control? Free Jacob himself? Is Jacob suffering from some affliction that renders him invisible like he is? Or is he a spirit? I'm really not buying this whole 'the island as a metaphor for life after death' thing. Too simple. Gives for a good story for the next 50 episodes.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Glad Locke is gone!!! what a LOSER!!!! I hated the way he kept groveling over his waste-of-a-dad! And I hated even more how he used others to fulfill his own personal gain (most recently Sawyer)...how pathetic was his need to "belong" and feel apart of something so badly that he screwed anyone and everyone that got in his way?! Even allowing himself to be used by Mr. Evil himself, Ben (ex: when he blew up the submarine)knowing full well that he was playing right into Ben's hand and helping the dark side? But did that matter to him??? NOoooo! Well good riddance. Have a nice after, after life.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

This was a great episode. But one thing the blogger did not touch on is the others who worked with Ben--the "hostile." It seems like Richard hasn't aged at all since he met Ben.

Here's my question: does the island keep you alive? Hey was healed from paralization- he can be healed from a gunshot wound (maybe). But then will the "others" see him as even more powerful then ever? Will Ben's plan have back-fired seeing Locke walk into camp after he supposedly left him for dead? The "others" will then certainly see him as the new leader as the group- an while Locke might not WANT that title, we know he has the capability. But how will our "Oceanic" people react if they ever encounter the "others" with Locke as their leader? That would be a interesting episode.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

No John Locke, no "Lost" for me.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

It'll take more than a single bullet from a bug-eyed control freak to put the Great White Hunter down. I am not buying that he is dead because he is a perfect foil to many characters on the show. I really believe that the creaters are developing him as a messiah-like character. I know she has been here for sixteen years, but I couldn't tell how old Ben was supposed to be in relation to how old he is now). But seriously, okay, I was bothered by the dear departed Carivale part and then, so, what gothic tale are they taking from with the Hostiles/Real Others? It has to be at least thirty years from when young Ben met Richard and Richard now, are they ghosts, did they find out the cost for eternal youth was children's souls/life essences and that Jacob and Island are punishing them for that by not letting them have children (doesn't that sound familar) and maybe the longer the Losties go without trying to save their stolen children, the more the Island will make an example or prevent a pregnancy from taking place (this factors in Walt that maybe the Others thought he was their next leader because Ben got sick and is aging or maybe Jacob wanted him, like Management wanted Ben Hawkins, to take over his role). Okay, I really have to work

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I was just searching for posts about last night's LOST and stumbled upon yours. In fact, I believe that the writers may have you believe he died for maybe even the rest of this season, but you can surly expect his character to resurface in a twist ending episode in Season 4. As stated in the article, Locke is "intimately linked to the island's powers." What other character is truly out for the truth - the same truth the viewer's seek? Jack most definitely is not. He plays as many games with his close friends as the others do with the group; though no thanks to Juliette's impending presence. Locke has seen the monster, and on more than one occasion. He seems to be the only one asking valid questions - Just what on Earth is going on here? Who are these people, what is this monster, what was the Dharma Initiative really up to before the Others wiped them out, and most importantly after this last episode, we applaud Locke for side-stepping Ben's quirky way of interjecting mystery by knocking out Mikhail to get to the ROOT questions at hand.

Maybe John was getting to close to the truth for the writers, but with an ending in sight, 3 seasons away, I wouldn't write off Locke as dead just yet... again, who else is going to seek the REAL secrets of the island if not him?

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I don't think Locke should die. But, as for Jacob, and, Locke's being able to hear him, when Ben had claimed that Jacob only spoke to him---many of you feel like Jacob is somehow really Locke, with hair, and, possessed of great powers.
What if Jacob IS Locke's alter-ego, somehow, that part of Locke that drives his quest for truth, answers? That, for Locke to be the whole man, that he strives for, at peace, he, somehow, is going to become the physical embodiment of the spirit-like Jacob?
Maybe Jacob, in his need to be joined to Locke, has, as has been hinted at, numerous times, drawn them all to the island, and, manipulated events, such that Ben was doing Jacob's necessary physical work, in bringing into proximity the formerly-beaten & broken John Locke with his destiny?
Someway, I believe that Jacob is going to inhabit the body of Locke, whether it be a resurrection (Christ-like), or, otherwise, rise again, and, vanquish Ben, and, those doing his bidding.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I thought Jacob could be a historic pirate from the original inhabitants (hostiles)...maybe Jacob Hendrikszoon Lucifer (googled). Three reasons: he abhor technology (remember no flashlights), the unexplained historic pirate ship on the island, and the screenshot figure looks pirate-like?

I'm starting to think Richard was also an original pirate from the way he was dressed when young Ben met him in the jungle.

John Locke's (from the philosopher's namesake) presence on the island is starting to make more sense as an allegory for the state of nature. The philosopher believed in 'natural' rights of individuals and societal governments should be limited and from the people and should not violate the moral rights of individuals. Thus Locke's character is hedging his allegiance to either camps until he can figure out which is worse; dictatorship from a clear leader (Ben, power, organization, control, planning) and democracy with no clear leader (camp, groupthink, hysteria, lack of guidance, dreams (desmond's)).

Being shot by Ben and having his natural right violated (he did not commit a crime and was more an abuse of power), I think this will firmly push Locke back to the camp?

Similarly, Rousseau’s presence also makes sense with the same philosopher analogy. She is withdrawn from any group and lives in isolation. She is the antithesis of Locke, preferring to live life as a neutral person and under her own general will as to avoid being corrupted by either society. The philosopher believed that persons were neither good nor bad but were tainted by society and their bad habits of social hierarchies.

Heck no. The writers will drag him back in when the show starts to drag again. The clever way to bring Locke back is to have him go off camera somewhere in the nether world of the island and give Jacob the help his asked for. Jacob then instills him with a few extra powers as a favor for his help. While he is gone he could coochy-up to Ben's mom and drive Ben mad for a while with a few of those "now you see me; now you don't" scenes with Locke snuggled up to his mom. Wellll...let's keep Locke in character. He's been helping everyone else; so, he might as well help those in the nether world for a while. Sure will be good, though, when the writers run out of flash-backs so that the show can move forward with it's own present-day action. Hey, why not sneak in some boogers from the nether world at John Locke's request to terrorize a few of the show's jackasses? Some viewers would love that. I would.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

It's okay. This will certainly add more veiwers just as long as the uncertainty is short lived.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

The Others obviously have some kind of respect for John Locke, believing him to be special, since no one budged to stop him from beating on Mikhail. I could see him taking over Ben's leadership after exposing Ben's lies. Ben would remain alive, but maybe as an outcast from the Others. The Others would still be antagonists of the Losties because they want to contact the outside world and be rescued while Locke wants to cut off that contact. (There had been no contact since the Hatch imploded; he destroyed the communications station that Mikhail operated; he blew up the submarine - his character wants the island isolated from the rest of the world and he'll fight the Losties to prevent them from being rescued.)

Locke is obviously the one to take Ben's place when you consider the similarities. I'm guessing Richard plotted for Ben to kill his father and it was also Richard who prompted Locke to have Sawyer kill his father. Ben was the only one to hear from Jacob - until Locke heard him. Ben realizes the threat and that's why he shot Locke. The only question is whether it's Rousseau or her daughter that rescues Locke.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

No way Locke is dead. He knows that Locke has healing properties, so probably would have put a bullet in his head if he intended to kill him. Shooting him where he did almost seems like he went out of his way to not hit something vital. It would be a very anti-climatic way to kill such a strong character. And I think as we learn more about Ben we may find out he's not quite as evil as we're being led to believe. Maybe it's a test...to see if the "island" or Jacob will intervene. And what of the powder that was around the cabin? Could it be gunpowder-a trap set by Rousseau maybe? This episode did raise some interesting new questions by introducing the "natives"...I, for one, was assuming that the Others were made up of remnants of the Dharma Initiative...not so!

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Locke can't be dead because he is already dead, he can only die if he believes he is dead otherwise he will simply heal himself. That's what I believe is the whole twist to this island. That's why Naomi states the plane was found with all the bodies in it off of Bali. That's why Other Richard never really aged since Ben met him as a kid. It also explains Other Mikhail's miraculous recovery. That's why everyones dreams or nightmares happen (the polar bear from the comic book, Echo's brother, Locke's father, Jack's Father, Ben's mom, Michael and son sailing off to happiness, etc.). I also think that is why no one can give birth on the island because the dead cannot create the living. It was also aluded by Cooper and others that this is hell (the land of the dead). I think the only one who is alive on this entire place is Ben since he is the only one left alive since the massacre of the Dharma initiative and appears to be the only one to age or become ill and not spontaneously heal themselves.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

He isn't dead...it is confirmed that on the last episode of this season there will be a showdown between jack and locke

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

He's not dead. I don't think he's the best one on the show, but his odd behavior is certainly interesting! I also don't think that Jacob looks like Terry O'Quinn - this is a completely new character being introduced. Jacob has a turn-of-the century look to him, as does his cabin. And someone pointed out that Richard and the other "hostiles" did as well, and now I have to agree. They very well may be linked to the crashed pirate ship. It was also suggested that the island is a "fountain of youth" and I have to say, that idea does hold some water. Why else has Richard not aged a bit? And it would explain the fast healing properties of the island. And it also gives reason for women not to be able to bear children: there's no need for them.

On another note: Juliet's only going to work with Ben until she has opportunity to betray or dispose of him, and Jack is definitely in on that. Even before she said she hated him, I knew she didn't trust him in the least, but previously without Ben she had no hope of going home. Now she has hope with the 815ers.

Hurley, as goofy as he is, is the true leader of the group, whether he knows it or not. Everyone likes and trusts him. He quietly controls and manipulates the group with surprising ease, keeping them in line and making them do the right thing.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Locke isn't dead - he's contracted to return next year. Not forgetting that Ben thinks Locke killed his father.

In addition Locke was shot on the left side as mentioned earlier. There are fewer critical organs over there, lets hope that his one remaining kidney is the one on the right and not the one on his left.

I live here in Honolulu and I am exposed to many areas where they actually film the show and it is awesome. Last night I had dinner over in Kailua and who should walk in and sit down but my all time favorite person. Tha man who is single handed returning the word "DUDE" to our cultural lexicon. Hurley is the best, as long as they dont kill him off i could care less about anyone else. If you get the boxed sets from season 1 & 2 and watch several episodes in a row, you cannot help but to bust up LOL when he is on screen. Whoever writes for his character deserves a raise! The timing and delivery of his "Duuuudes" is perfect! As for the rest of you..very interesting theories... you have all put forth. I only began watchin this year and was given seaon 1 & 2 by a friend so I could get caught up and this was just 2 months ago. So far reading all these posts I am MOST intrigued by the Locke and Rousseau "societal philosophy" theories regarding those to characters. That was awesome analysis! I also like the "6th Sense" "I see dead people" theories as well.. To expound on that...if they are all actually dead and in some kind of purgatory, then it would only be right that with Naomi parachuting in months after the plane went down that she would know the fate of Flight 815, since for her it would be "old news" as it were. As for me, watching season 1 & 2 by way of boxed sets was a great way to get hooked on the show. But with everything that happened during those 2 seasons, the one moment that put me ROTFLMAO was when Hurley gave away all the food only to have fresh new pallets of food drop from the sky moments later! LOL (Manna (sp) from heaven for all you Bible theorists.) Because I have not gone back and read previous posts I do not know if anyone mentioned this before. If someone did, my bad. If not, food from heaven is something we can all ponder over the summer break after next weeks show! There is also Libby, Ana Lucia and Shannon. But, Sawyer and Sayid survived and it was already mentioned that Locke was probably shot in the area of the donated kidney. It might just be a possibility that Rousseau shows up and can help him out. After all, when Locke was in the grave there was not much blood visible.
Still not sure if Locke will live though because I read in another article that TOQ sold his house in Hawaii, which is really not a good implication and even if the character lives would reduce appearances to minor appearances.
The confrontation between Jack and Locke could just be a flashback.
And, in case the writers read the public opinion, I like Locke and rather have him on the show than the smug Surgeon General of the Island.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

If Locke is really dead then I WILL stop watching and tell everyone else to do so also. Back in the earlier sseasons when the losties first met the french lady (i can't spell her name) they asked her where she came from and didn't she said that she was on a ship that crashed, and that the people on the ship went crazy or something so she had to kill some of them? He continually goes through emotional and spiritual changes on the island, and is the number one character that drives the sci-fi elements of the show forward, revealing more as he discovers parts of the island. Also, in the episode previous to his shooting, the writers made a point to show how accelerated his healing truly is (the bit on his hand, without even a scar). Granted, a shot to the kidney (or possibly lack thereof!) is not something that heals on its own, but Rousseau or even Jacob or the Losties are capable of finding Locke in this time of need. I wouldn't give up hope, this is John freaking Locke we're talking about here!

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

kinne, I'm quitting LOST if Locke dies, too.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

B. Think about where Locke was shot. left kidney. except, as a poster on another site noted, Locke doesn't have a left kidney, does he? While seriously hurt, the bullet is through-and-through, missing vital organs. O'Quinn was quoted as coyly saying Locke "would be helped" by something he gave away earlier in the series -- and if the island heals Patchy, it'll works even better on Locke. I never thought Locke was meant to die, but this is a plausible way for him to live. As also said above, if Locke was to die, Ben wouldn't have plugged him a second time. who steps in for Locke should he be killed off? Only way I can see ihsi death is if O'Quinn finally gets the big-money role he deserves. He's not only plays the most interesting character on the show, he's the strongest actor in the cast. Take him away, and who becomes the mystic? I hope he gets to channel Neil Young is a future show; I hear he does a dead-on impression.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

The statue with 4 toes. Plus it was weird to me that the Hostiles did not bother to cover the mass grave. I would think that even the Hostiles would have done that, I mean, they didn't waste a second picking up the bodies. So wouldn't they also be tidy about covering the bodies in the grave pit? (I guess the writers needed the grave to be uncovered fot the Locke shooting scene.)

One more thing...why do SO MANY people have to die on this island? It seems almost silly now that so many people get killed in this story.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Who is Locke?

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Does anyone else think it is a coincidence that Ben and Locke both have a mother named "Emily"?

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I'm sure John Locke will survive, he has to, someone has to take over leadership of the others. They have grown tired of Ben's attempts to lead them. Richard Alpert would have never given Locke the file with James Ford's history if he didn't feel Locke would not step up to the plate and deliver the body of his dead father as instructed. This is the second time we have seen Richard Alpert befriend an emotionally troubled boy and assist him in his quest to join the others. And that's all John Locke is really, an emotionally troubled boy trapped in a mans body. I can only imagine that no good will come of this. John Locke will be worse than Ben as he gets over taken by all the power that the island possesses. Think about it, why would Richard bring in someone from outside his group to lead the group, why doesn't he just do it himself. The answer to that remains a mystery but one thing is certain it can be good. The producers code named the finale the snake in the mail box. I can't think of a bigger snake than John Locke. He was once a part of the 815ers and everyone's friend, but the island will heal him again and he's soon going to become their worst enemy cause he won't let anyone off the island.

Why then does he ask Locke for help...obviously the visit doesn't go like previous visits Ben has had, and now he sees Locke as a threat to either his power over the others, or a threat to Bens personal goals and selfish desire on the island...Locke will be back, in the end he will be the "savior"... he is central to the island and to the show, it is crucial to keep him as a character

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I don't think Locke is dead, but my question is...is Kate pregnant now too?

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Locke is not dead - If you recall, he was conned out of something by his dad, and because of this medical procedure, it will ensure his survival....think about it....

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

The plane crash that they found showing no survivers on flight 815 was most likely a fake set up by Ben. LOcke is my favorite character on the show, partly because I can identify with him. I am a balding, over 50 guy who works in an office, altho thankfully I do not come from a dysfunctional family. How many wage slaves have always felt they were destined for something greater, then had that hope ground out of them? How many of us daydream of being heroes? Locke is my favorite guy on teh show, warts and all.
BTW, in terms of the roles the survivors play, Locke is definitely the shaman - like a priest of nature.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Now, we might get a moment's peace. They were adamant that everything on the island will have a rational explanation in the end. They will not, they said, pull an X-Files, trailing off into a mist of ambiguous vagaries. As I recall, they specifically dismissed Twilight Zone endings, such as "it was all a dream," or "they're all really dead and in Purgatory." But what do they mean by "rational"? There's the rub. Do they mean eleven-dimensional-quantum-physics rational, or do they mean Newtonian rational? If the island has a rational explanation, then the spirit monster might be something quite material, such as a swarm of nanobots, which would explain its aversion to the ultrasonic fence. Perhaps the nanobots will fix Locke. Just a reminder: We didn't see him die. But beyond that, his demise IS unthinkable purely on dramatic grounds. However he comes back, it is sure to reveal more about the mysteries of the island. In the background, behind the polar bear and the mist-monster, seems to lurk the ultimate theme of free will vs. predestination. It will be interesting to see how the writers handle that one.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

I hope Locke isn't dead. He can't be. He's one of the main characters and he's come such a long way to make Peace with his life. I feel that he's an intricate part of the storyline. I just hope that we'll know by the end of the season finale that yes, he is still alive.

I love the actor (Terry O'Quinn)whose always played dark characters (The Stepfather). I think he's a very deversified in his acting abilities and he's also not bad on the eyes.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Does anyone have the feeling that Jacob represents God?
Here is Ben looking at an empty chair with complete faith that someone all powerful is sitting there.
Then you have Locke, who won't believe unless he can see someone sitting in the chair.
Looks an awful lot like some of the struggles that many of us face each day with our faith.

Locke's still key to 'Lost'

Why hasn't Hurley lost any weight? Even hoping for that to happen, I think it would blow my mind if it actually did. The second woman in the looking glass you could not get a good look at her but was it Nadia?
