The Volkswagon Ruton commerical was number 2, where they say women are getting pregnant to get one. Yes, the Ad execs are really reaching new lows with this one. Trying to be cute and actualy being insulting, way to go Brook Shields!
I have a few others, but the sappy wife's "this could be fun", keeps swirling around in my brain, I guess they got their point accross, but I have too, MUTE!

that goes something like this: Recognize that through absolutely no fault of your own, you are going to come in contact with a song by that band and accept it. Interestingly, most of the acts people are naming as being "on their list" all have one thing in common. They are all grossly overplayed on radio ( with the exception of Rush). I think it is not so much that you really dislike the artist as much as it is that you are hearing the artist again for the 10th time today. I bet if you thought about it, you could recite the playlist from every classic rock station in the country verbatim:

Same is true of adult contemporary radio, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion and a few others on constant rotation. This is how somebody ends up on a "list". It isn't that they are necessarily a bad artist, or that you would not enjoy hearing them in moderation, its just the over exposure that kills them.

Might I suggest a serious ear examination to anyone who has the four mentioned above on their list? Bowie's stuff from the 70s is still better than most of the crap on radio now. Janice Joplin's stuff is also timeless and U2 is still the best live show I've ever seen.

I was gonna put Santana on the above list but I'm still trying to forgive him for his most recent stuff. It totally tarnishes the memory of the absolutely awesome stuff that he put out in the 60s and 70s. I recommend "Abraxas".

But that said, here's my list of folks that cause me to change the station:

Celine Dion-I can't listen to her and drive at the same time. I'll crash into something because I fell asleep.

Lionel Richie-I have a best friend who would kill me for this because she thinks he's awesome, but he did his best stuff with The Commodores and hasn't been worth a darn since.

Macy Gray tops my list. Thank God I rarely hear her music anymore (thanks to listening to the oldies station), but back in the early part of the decade I didn't go one night without hearing her on the radio. Her voice is really annoying, I'm sorry to say.

I don't really have any other artists I'll turn off, but rap, hip-hop, and a few songs like "Yellow Submarine" are immediate turnoffs.

Let me put it this way, I don't listen to anything other than the blues SPECIFICALLY because so many artists named above have been over played. Bands like Led Zep, the Stones and, God help me, Rush. The lead singer has the most anooying voice. Yeah a lot of the classic rock bands are blues baed but ever since they discovered that you can make more money if you seel out, they left it behind. Most didn't do it right anyway.

As for Celine, Beyonce, and Mariah Carey, all they do is yell and THAT is NOT singing. It's a plain and simple peeing contest.

I have honestly quit listening to the radio because of the over play syndrome and I never did listen to "adult contemporary" anyway.

For John Tate, I am a guitar player and I totally hear what you're saying. Amen!!

3) 3OH!3 "Don't trust me"- or pretty much any other song that discusses ho's.

Sadly, my work has the Sirius radio station permanently stuck to a station that plays all of these on like a 2 hour rotation, so its kind of like being in hell for 8 hours a day.

#1 without any hesitation is Smashing Pumpkins - Holy crap! His whiny, god awful voice is beyond belief.

#2 John Mayer - I can't stand anything that comes out of his mouth. Along w/ being a wimpy, no guts voice; he has zero passion in his singing. He sounds like he's just saying whatever it will take to get him into bed w/ the next chick he comes across. And "Say What You Need To Say," couldn't you think of anything else to say in that song? It sounds like it's skipping on a turntable.

Rod Stewart is by far at the top of my list, and always has been so I think it is kind of funny that the focal point of this article. I'm sure he is a nice guy, but he should seriously clear his throat before putting a microphone in front of his face.

If I had to pick a 2nd and 3rd:
Gloria Estefan and Rush.

The sad thing is that the only reason Rush is on my list is because someone convinced me to go see them live when I didn't really know their music... the only thing that saved me from ripping my own ears off was the fact that the drummer is pretty dang talented.

My list is a combo of individual song and group: The #1 'song' that makes my ears just shut down from the first note is......"MacArthur Park".....worst of the worst of the worst. Hate it and anyone else's version of it. #2 shut down is Rascal Flats. Flat indeed; weak; monotonous. #3 is screechy Michael Bolton who makes me want to bolt everytime he turns up on the radio. There are a few others but they tend to rotate. These are the 3 that have stayed consistently at the top.

Heres a list for the rockers:

1. Def Leppard - even the band's name is a bad joke. This band (or more correctly, Mutt Lange) is responsible for making homogonized, bland, all-sounds-the-same rock acceptable.
2. Rage Against the Machine - talk about a one-note wonder: thankfully the band showed real talent and dynamics when they dumped the whiney angry brat, hired a real singer, and became Audioslave.
3. Anything released in the last ten years... with the one exception of the above named Audioslave. Remember when bands released albums, and not just a couple radio-ready formulatic 'hits' surrounded with an hour of filler?

And for the classic rockers:

1. Clapton. I never, ever, understood the 'Clapton is God' crowd. His 'hits' are, with very little exception, straight-on note-for-note COVERS! (Listen to the original version of 'Cocaine' by J.J. Cale for a prime example.)
2. The Beatles. With the one possible exception of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - which, ironically, features a long guitar solo by... Eric Clapton. Which proves my statement that Clapton can only play other peoples' songs. (I guess 'While Eric Clapton's Guitar Gently Weeps' would have been too confusing a title...)
3. Van Hager. (Not to be confused with Van Halen - the original Van Halen, not the current Van Halen Family Franchise Inc.) Sometimes, hiring a new singer, even when the old one is a total tool with far more attitude than talent, is not the best option. Especially when the new singer is a total tool with far more attitude than talent.

1) The Charlie Daniels Band. They only have that one song about the guy in a contest with the devil, but I HATE HATE HATE it with a passion.

2) Anything by the Allman Brothers -- their songs are all way too long and remind me of the Simpsons episode where Bart gets the organist in church to play In Da Gadda Da Vida and everyone stands there singing for 17 minutes.

3) Any song in which the artist refers to himself/herself by name. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Carlos Santana has a song where he does this. VERY annoying. We're listening to your song -- is it really necessary to remind us who you are? No!

Nickleback - sounds like he is trying to hard and all the songs sound alike. Save yourself some money. Don't buy the whole CD, just buy one song and set your player to repeat.

Natalie Merchant - The song Jealousy pops up ever now and then, and I can't scramble to the mute button fast enough.
