I do like the new Liberty Mutual ads, but sometimes, when times are harder, you want something lighter, too.

The new Toyota Prius commercial (with all of the people dressed in different colors making up the background) are pretty cool...My mom even called me the other night and said those commercials were cool enough to make her want a Toyota - just because of the commercial...And this is a woman who won't drive anything but an American car brand...

I know he can't win again, but the Billy Mays commercials are just too much...My husband refuses to buy anything with his name on it because he hates the commercials so much...

I have to admit that I'm one of those people who tries very hard to turn down the t.v. and ignore commercials as much as possible. There are times I am unable to do it quick enough and end up having to watch some. The two that have annoyed me the most this year are both insurance commercials: Nationwide On Your Side (omg, really? you think so?). First off your commercial has just convince me to never, ever buy Nationwide and second, trying to convince me that you are on my side has as much chance as snow melting in -0c weather! The other is the Progressive Girl. The commercial itself doesn't really drive me nuts...but that woman does. Bad enough that she dresses like a reject from the 50/60's era but the way she talks? Enough to bury my head!!

I can't stand the Liberty Mutual ad where the mom and son are in the hallway at a hospital after what was apparently an accident he caused and she's badgering him about what happened. The voice-over about "when people do the right thing..." drives me insane, since no one in this ad appears to be doing "the right thing." Good call on this one Gael: I can't think of another commercial I hated more.

One of the funniest that isn't playing anymore since Lent ended was the McDonald's Filet-o-Fish ad where the fish on the wall is singing. Cracked me up every time I saw it. I also like the Progressive ads with Flo. They're clever and cute.
Now, as for annoying, BILLY MAYS goes without saying. But also, I am mildly annoyed by the Honda Insight commercial's song. Don't know what it is, just don't like it much.

I nominate the Alltel ads with "Chad" and the inept posse of other cell phone carriers. The most recent one is particularly bad with the posse being buried in sand up to their necks and they call Chad because he's "..the only one who will answer..." Chad starts talking about Alltel's service and the posse sends him away with a "...good day!" The posse is left on the beach at night with crabs approaching and they scream like little girls. All the Altell "Chad" commercials are bad. DO people actually switch because of these?

The one I think I dislike the most is the one where the woman insists that her mom has alzheimers and "noone" seems to listen and is in denial. I understand the premis, but I don't like how it was done.

The two I am totally liking right now is the Dairy Queen one where the kids had Tivo'd DQ commercials one for a Blizzard and the other a cheeseburger and they play when mom or dadare in the room and the on ekid says "this is the best idea you have ever had". The other is the MAC PC commercial about the helpline. CRacks me up.

I completely agree with your take on the LM ads. It was not until I saw the clip above (which I have seen on TV multiple times) that I tied it to Liberty Mutual. I kept thinking it was for the Partnership for a Drug-Free America...shows how much that caught my attention.

I have to send in a vote for the Progressive Insurance ads. Flo is funny and entertaining and I like how the ads work. I especially liked the christmas one,"I like cahsmere socks..." The ads that baffle me are any of the Geico ones with the gecko. I'm wondering why the british accent and why he is now the spokesperson for Geico. Wish the cavemen would come back at least they were clever and understandable.

Arby's has a commercial I really enjoy. It opens with two chubby, middle-aged guys, one in a black outfit (maybe Spanish?) and the other dressed in all white as a baker, running across a field towards each other. They hug and I always laugh when flour dust clouds emerge from the baker's back during the hug. The men are laughing as they hold both hands and turn around in a circle, just like little kids. Then they ride a tanden bike, fly a kite, and finally, skip off hand in hand. There's something that's just so joyous about this ad.

As for worst, I've come to loathe the "Butt Dialing" ads in which a moderately attractive, youngish upper-middle-class couple can think of nothing better to do with their relatively privileged lives than snark smarmily at each other about their cellphones [teeth grinding]. This ad was included as part of the pre-feature package at the last movie I saw, and I nearly ran screaming from the theater!

Funny you mention this ad, because it so struck me the first time (and subsequent) I saw it. I've actually mentioned it to others to ask their perspective on it. After the pulling back from the bus commercials, which were good but got a little tiring, this was so good and refreshing. The Liberty Mutual ads include some tag line about doing the right thing. "The Marlowes will do the right thing, and so will we," seems to be the message. Sure, you can see the value in getting that message out when people generally think of insurance companies as heartless and detached.

My hands-down vote for favorite commercial is the Toyota Prius ads with all the people dressed up like grass, flowers, water, clouds, the sun. Ya'll know the one, the Prius drives by and the "snow" turns to green, which is really people standing up and throwing off white covers (snow) to reveal the green!!! Very cool!!!

I also love the cell phone commercials made like horror movies (it's a dead zone!!!), but don't know if they count as new ads.

My favorite commercial in recent days (I'll stop my TiVo for this one) is only shown here in the northwest, for Sterling Savings Bank. It shows a guy outside on his deck talking on the phone to the new bank that now holds his account - he tells them he's in Washington, y'know - Seattle, Pacific Northwest, Oregon, Idaho....
I think I like it so much because I relate so well to it, having moved from the midwest to Washington in my early 20's and having to explain that no, I wasn't moving to the town of Washington, Iowa - or Washington, D.C. Then I'd have to explain that I was moving to Washington state, on the west coast. I still remember the confused looks I received in response to that!

I forgot to mention my nominations for worse commercial. After reading the other comments, I agree with the liberty mutual ads being among the worse. I don't see what this has to do with insurance. I thought it was for a religion.

I also love the Old Navy mannequins. The newest has a new guy brought in for a special promotion doing one arm push-ups; his arm is off. I also thought the Burger King square butts commercial is hilarious, but typically think the BK king is creepy.

I hate the State Farm commercials (you get what yuo pay for), which show people getting their car washed but not rinsed, buying a hot dog but getting no bun, and buying from an ice cream truck and not getting a stick on the ice cream. HATE those! (I didn't know what the commercial was for until I read one of these responses... I never stick around to watch the whole thing.)

One I like: may be regional, but the Food Lion grocery store has one with a bunch of shopping carts full of groceries ($79.00 or $98.54, etc.), and a family is 'big game hunting.' The mother finds one she likes which fits the budget so they have to 'hunt' the cart and separate it from the herd. It's really quite cute and clever. My least favorite is a tie between any Enzyte commercial and any "sell your gold" commercial - but this could just be because I watch too much VH1 and these get heavy rotation there (apparently, VH1 users need bigger things and have lots of gold?). I was also put off by the new woman's personal shaver where women walk into the shot, and the nearest bush adjusts its shape to what must be her bush shape. I think it's tacky, but that's just me.

How could I have forgotten the GEICO money pile ads? I hate those! Further, I can't figure GEICO out: What a bizarre melange of the brilliant, the awful, and (strangely) campaigns that oscillate between awful AND brilliant? And what other brand would have so many overlapping campaigns that are so different in style? I'm no expert, but I doubt that's what they teach in Marketing 101.

As for Progressive Flo, I go back and forth about those ads: Sometimes I find them cute and even a little bit sexy; other times, Flo bugs the heck out of me. It seems to depend on my own mood at the time the ad comes on. Not sure what that says about the overall goodness of the campaign....

I love Flo, the Progressive girl. She has actual personality - a trait I find lacking in many commercial spokes-people.

I was also a big fan of the turkey commercial that was shown around Thanksgiving - it showed a woman struggling with a HUGE turkey. It keeps slipping and she drops it on the floor. Then, while trying to hoist it back into the sink, it flies through the window & beans her husband in the head. Wonderful.

I'm also a fan of the butt dialing folks. It's a real occurrence & they showed a very real exchange about it.

So far the worst ad of the season has to be the one for Posti-Vac (the only cure for erectile disfunction covered by Medicaid) As if the idea of a vacuum pump isn't frightening enough, we then get testimonials (from guys who look like they were recruited at the bar across the street from the trailor park) telling us "You can either be all you can be or you won't." and "Put some life back into your life" and finally "If you have a brain in your head, you'll pick up the phone and order this product." This little gem makes Enzyte Bob look like a work of art.

Worst - Burger King "square butts". The target audience, obviously is children (kids meals and SpongeBob) but it is overtly sexual (more so than it is funny) and he sings the "d word"! #1 - Any Subway ad with that stupid '$5 dollar foot long' song. It was bad the first time I heard it and has gotten progressively worse each time. Sorry, but the absolute best ad I have seen this year can only be seen on-line. It is hysterical.

It's the Bud-Lite Porn ad, where the poor schmuck goes in to a convenience store to by a 6-pack of Bud-Lite and in the ensueing exchange with the middle-aged Asian clerk she mistakes a comment for a smut magazine title and she begins trying to find the magazine for him. About that time his long-lost high school sweetheart walks in and hears the clerk telling a fellow employee "He wants PORN!" Just when you think it couldn't get any more embarassing for this poor fellow he gets taken hostage in a holdup at the convenience store and the local news identifies him as "Local Porn Buyer..." It is the funniest ad I have seen in many years.

The nasal decongestant ad with the animated nose nazis clones who squirt the product into the sufferers nose and then yell , "Look out,it's gonna blow!" Gimme a break

Smuckers Jam. The two little boys are walking their bikes and one is complaining that no one ever asks what he wants to be when he grows up. The brother says it's because of his name. "Richard", the little boys says? "No, Smucker" replies the brother. The tag line gets me every time. The little boy says "I Love Jam". I love those little boys and the era they evoke.

Orville Redenbacker popcorn where the mom brings her little daughter, who's having a tea party, some popcorn. The dad and the oldest broher come in the room and say something about smelling popcorn. They proceed to the table and the little girl covers the bowl and says "tea party". Then the two guys are shown all dressed up in hats and boas, sitting at the table shoveling in popcorn. The little girl then says "napkins!" and the two guys daintly dab their mouths.

Love the new Liberty Mutual ads which extol "doing the right thing". They do make you think

Love the cell phone ad about the guy who's daughters told their friends about the dad's Internet dating!

Love the creative Toyota ads that show people dressed up as parts of the earth. Visually stunning!

I like the Intel commercials especially at the end when you see and hear the people singing "ding, bum bum bum bum (the Intel jingle).

I love the Jimmy Dean commercials; the ones where the guy is dressed up as the sun. I especially love when they show him in his office setting with people dressed up like clouds, fog, and rainbows.

COMMERCIAL HATES:

The Bing.com commercial. Talk about noisy! The mute button goes right on.

Hate the E-trade baby.

The butt-dialing one. Both ought to be hit with their cell phones.

The Geigo "eyes" commercial. Love the music, hate the creepy-ness.

The Quizznos "put it in me" commerical.

All of the Old Navy mannequin commercials.

Not sure which brand, but the cell phone commericial where the guy dumps all the jimmies (most in the country call them sprinkles, in Boston they're called jimmies) out of the dish (something to do with being able to call all these people). Then the ice-cream guy says "Do you want whipped cream with that?".

Any of the Cialis commercials. WTF is up with the bathtubs everywhere? And why do they seem to show these commercials during supper?

The cartoon bears in the Charmin ads. I really don't want to see a bear's bottom and find out he's has white flakes on them from toilet tissue.

The McCormick Grinders commercial with the little girl having a party. The mom calls her and wants to know what happened with the pepper shaker. The girl runs to her and says "I'll do it" and proceeds to pepper the dish. There's something in that little girl's voice that sets my teeth on edge.

The new commercial for Bing is great. The people are asking a question and each word in the sentence sets everyone else off on a tangent of unrelated things that have that word in it. It's very clever because (1) most search engines do this to you every day and it's annoying, and (2) getting someone to try a new search engine is pretty hard because most of us stick with what we know, and this might actually make someone give Bing a try.

As for the worst, the new GM commercial is the winner. The commercial itself is really nice, and it could have been great. They explain how they hit some hard times, they're bouncing back, here's what we're planning for the future, etc., but they totally lose it at the end when they say something about how it's "time to get down to business." HELLO??? You are JUST NOW getting down to business?? What the hell have you been doing all these years that caused the goverment to use MY hard-earned money to bail out your sorry asses? It almost made me glad because they were sucking me in again and making me feel like they really get it now and are actually going to do things better and smarter, and then that line at the end made me realize that they are just manipulating us again, and they really haven't learned anything at all. One of my faves are the for the KIA soul with the hampsters just jammin away to their tunes. Shows how they are livin it up, while the rest of the hampster world keeps goin around in circles in their little wheel.

Worst, wow so many to choose from, the latest GEICO Cavemen spots with "let me be myself" theme takes all the humor out of the characters. The Burger King ads touting a KIDS MEAL of all things to Baby's Got Back, I'm no prude, but that one just seems in poor taste. But any BK ad with that Creepy King, I get nightmares over that HUGE head!

I think I'm the only person on the planet that doesn't find the Geico commercials creepy. I like the one where the money is sitting on the fencepost in the middle of nowhere and the scary-grizzled rancher says "Poor fella, looks tired".

I'm a big fan of the Jack in the Box mini burgers (herding cattle the size of schnauzers), but I HATE the new one for the buffalo ranch chicken sandwich. So annoying.

not a fan of Prius commercials.Costumed characters? Happy,sappy jingles? What schlock..reminds me of a kiddie show. Also detest whatever feminine hygeine product uses the comedienne that screams "poor baby, my utereus is falling out" not funny by any account.
And if I hear "want whipped cream with that?" from that stupid cell phone company one more time...ugh
Anyone remember way back when,that the reason cable companies said we should pay for tv was that it would be commercial free?
As for best ads...definitely the jammin hamsters of kia, the Heinken closet ad and the monster.com ad where the guy has his desk underneath the moose butt next to the office of his boss.

I am clearly in the minority! I like the Geico pile of money with eyes because it's so weird ("Poor little guy -- must have been following you for miles.") and I find the Toyota Prius commercials with all the people in unitards strangely creepy and off-putting. I'm kind of tired of the e-trade baby, but have to admit that "shankopottamus" has entered our daily vocabulary. I mean, how could it not? And I am still a fan of the Terminix commercials with the giant roaches and termites burning rubber out of the neighborhood ("What if I just... put this on your table?").

And, sigh, Billy Mays is growing on me, God help us.

I tend to watch a lot on DVR so I skip commercials. Ironically, it's the Comcast commercial that drives me up a wall. After my rant on my least favorite (there's no commercial that comes close to me hating the "Operation Repo" one), I can admit that I did like the Filet-o-Fish commercial (it's a little annoying but very funny) and the one with the hamsters. The hamsters one might be more effective if they were on moving balls, though. I don't get why them rolling in their balls but staying in place is an equal comparison. Now, rolling in their little balls at a breezy 3 mph tops, compared to the speedy Kia, *that* would be more effective.

I also go back and forth between liking Flo from Progressive and being annoyed by her. She's not half as annoying or creepy as that lady from that commercial from the fat-burning pill commercial, though (the name of the product escapes me).

Count me as another fan of the Prius commercials with the people dressed as flowers, trees, etc. and the Kia Soul commercials with the hamsters. They're just too dang cute when they're getting their groove on. I also really like Flo in the Progressive ads. And I don't think it's particularly new but I like the Verizon ad with the guy getting a hotel room from the creepy old desk clerk. The way he says "Towels are kinda scratchy!" at the end just cracks me up.

Probably the commercials I hate the most right now are the Geico ones with the pile of money with eyes. They're creepy, weird and make me glad I don't use Geico.

How responsible is a huge company like L M which has been gobbling up smaller Insurance Carriers, sucking their business into the L M vortex and then with no remorse, eliminates hundreds of jobs. The cell phone commercials where the mother is harping at her children about "wasting" their unsued rollover minutes. The Mother is soo dead serious and the kids just roll their eyes when she says that those are "perfectly good" minutes.
The worst:
By far, the Burger King commercials with the person in the goofy "king" outfit. I wonder what 3rd grader came up with the idea for that series of commercials.
My biggest gripe watching TV these days is seeing the ads for upcoming programs splashed on the bottom part of the screen. Sometimes it takes up 1/4 of the screen or has little people running across it. If there is writing on the bottom, you won't be able to read it.

It's for some little kids drink, like pediasure or something, but the little girl where the mom is telling her where her nose is, and then she finds the dog's nose at the end of the comercial. She's got to be the cutest little girl in a commercial, and the look on the dogs face. I love it.

I like the Geico Gecko, but hate the cavemen and the stack of money. Yeah and that slap chop dude is even more annoying than Billy Mays

As much as I hate Sprint as a company, I'll also admit I do like their new commercials: "Right now, 84 people are listening to Pandora on a bus. 96 people just found their friends on Loopt. 2 of those people just realized they're right next to each other."

And I'll go as far as to say that their commercial technically lies about their "4G" network (just as their mid-90's PCS commercials did) and while I expect to see Sprint bought or in bankruptcy by 2012, their current line of commercials with the "statistics" aren't that bad.

Hate the commercials for Free Credit Report.com with the guys in the band. It was cute the first five times you saw the commercial, but they've completely overplayed them to the point where anytime they are on I have to Mute the tv, no matter what song the three guys are performing. Way to run a concept into the ground, guys!!!

Commercials, in general, suck lately. The last time I can remember really laughing at a commercial was years ago for some vacuum cleaner. They had a cat sitting on the second step from the bottom in a house, cat meows, then all of a sudden, as if there's a bomb under the cat, all the fur from this persian cat seems to fly into the air, and the only words the announcer says are, "Shedding Problem?" Classic, funny commercial, pity they only showed it a few times before abandoning it.

Okay, after much thought I have to admit I really like the Verizon wireless commercial at the hotel where the crotchety old guy tells the renter that there is no signal and the Verizon guys say its okay. and the old motel manager says well the towels are scratchy! It just makes me laugh. I also like the butt-dialers, dont know what the commercial is for but it makes me laugh.
I must agree that the King commercials no matter what are the most creepy commercials going, along with the male enhancement ones. There is really no need for those commercials, if a man has this problem he should just really see his doctor and not share his issues with us, also feel the same way about any female issues. Dont recognize many of the commercials mentioned.
I also love the Kia Soul hamsters...that are just tooo cute.

Quizno's has an ad campaign for it's new sandwich that has narrower bread. Originally, the ad ended with the talking oven telling the Quizno's employee to "Put it in me" as the employee holds this long phallic looking sandwich. Now the oven says "I'm waiting for it". The original version was funnier.

Also, since Discovery started running Pitchmen, I have a new view of Billy Mays. He talks loud due to his days as a county fair pitchman. But also remember, it is the television station that cranks up the decibels for commercials. If they kept them quiet, what would be the point of having commercials?

I happen to like the Hillshire Farm commercials "GO MEAT!!".

But getting really annoying are the Swiffer commercails with the mop trying to "win back thier ladies". Puh lease.

The Geico money with eyes, the one I like is the restuarant one where the woman keeps looking at it and kinda flirting cracks me up.

Love Flo. There have been a couple of times that the commerical has annoyed me, but overall not too bad. I actually crack up with the butt dialing couple.

Mostly though we do ff past the majority of commercials tahnsk to dvr'ing.

Haven't seen the Prius ads or the Kia ads so won't comment on those but I love the Heineken ad with the beer closet. I think it's extremely clever.

I like the State Farm ads where someone (a new groom, a new father, etc) is talking about the changes in their life and then says "I'm there."

And while I abhor most cell phone ads (especially Alltel and Chad), T-Mobile has a new one out that struck my funny bone - they talk about hiring economists to go door to door to show people the best plan for them, then you see the doors being slammed in their faces. The next shot is Catherine Zeta-Jones knocking on doors and the guy is welcoming her into her home.

As to my can't stand ads:

Any male enhancement ads.
Any Quiznos or Subway ads (I'll add in general that I can't stand most fast food ads, they make me NOT want to eat there - both Sonic and Burger King lost my business a long time ago due to their ads).
Any Geico ad - bring back the squirrels running people off the road.
Progressive's Flo just gets on my nerves, especially her name tag.
The butt dialing ad - stoopid.
The Hillshire Foods "Go Meat" ads, have me racing for the mute button every time.
And I just don't like the e-Trade baby.

The Labatt Blue commercials, especially the one tells the crowd about Labatt beer coming from streams in Canada and one guy asks him if he's ever even been to Canada. The guy telling the story corrects him, "It's pronounced 'Canada' (pronouncing it exactly the same way the quetioner asked) and no, I've never been." Heard it at least 6,000 times during hockey season, but it still makes me laugh. My family uses that line all the time on everything, correcting the pronunciation, but saying it the same way. Good stuff....

The ads feature what appears to be an executive or market researcher offering children some fun item (bike, pony, etc.) and then taking it away from them, explaining that they didn't read the fine print. The most annoying ad campaign on the air right now has GOT to be the Progressive ads with that annoying woman trying to be all quirky and funny. To me she's just irritating.

I get creeped out when the Toyota Prius commercial comes on with the painted people acting as scenery. It is the same kind of creepy as the Oompa Loompas in the 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' movie.

At my house we love the Prius commercial that others have already mentioned. I also like all the Mac/PC commercials.

Least favorite: Axe commercials or Burger King spots. Doesn't matter which one. Any commercial for either of those companies makes me change the channel.

Ads that have my deep, abiding, homicidal hatred: Oh Lord, how much do I hate those Booty Call commercials. Could the people who dreamed up these commercials be any more misgynostic and juvenile? I also hate all the Burger King commercials, really, do you they think that those spots would want to make my family eat there? That would be a not. I also don't care for any Viagra, Cialis or the creepy Bob guy for Enzyte ads. I swear that Bob guy looks like he had just escaped from the Institute for the Very Very Nervous. I keep hoping his golfing buddies would whack him senseless with their golf clubs and throw his corpse into the water hazard.

Love: I just get a giggle everytime when I watch the Armstrong Floor commercials featuring the skateboarding dog. Cute beyond words. I also love the Kia Soul spots with the hamsters. Plus the Orville Reddenbacher commercial with the little girl and her tea party. Another favorite is one for American Airlines, the one with the film producer stuck with a flighty director who keeps changing his mind on locales. His delivery of "Why squirrel hate me?" gets me every time.

I called GEICO myself to complain about the Geko steeling the $ off the desk, then not being truthful??? What kind of example is that !!! But I hated the BK's one about the square-buts !!1That was just insulting to humans everywhere !

I cannot change the station/channel fast enough when those Subway commercials come on for the "$5 Dollar Footlong" that apparently are trying to capitalize off the whole American Idol craze. Hearing people sing off-tune is the last thing I want to hear on my TV or radio. It physically makes my angry.

LOVE: The SOBE commercial with the NFL Players dancing in white leotards. FUNNY
and the SONIC commercial "Ladies Night Out" its so stupid, i had to laugh

HATE: Full Bar, Geico commercials with the cavemen or the pile of money, and the Verizon wireless commercial with the creepy train conductor. Oh, and any Boost Mobile Commercial, like the guy eating a burrito out of the corpse, why do they think making me want to puke is going to make me want to switch to Boost?? ICK ICK ICK!!

For worst: the AT&T rollover minutes commercials, where the son doesn't want to use the "old" minutes and the mom insists they're just as good. Neither character is sympathetic and you end up not caring about the product as a result.
