Well, of all of those I only watch NCIS - have to say it was originally because Mark Harmon is nice eye candy (sorry but true) - I keep watching because I love the show. I also loved JAG (from which NCIS is a spin off). I can't tell you the best season but I can tell you the best lines:

Best Season of NCIS is iffy -- if you are NOT going to be watching the latest episodes for the new season, then Season 1. If you are going to be watching new episodes, Season 3 but it requires watching a few episodes in Season 2 + the finale. (How Ziva becomes a part of the team.). The best season overall is probably Season 5.

The Mentalist and NCIS are on my must watch half dozen. You have to watch The Mentalist from episode 1 and understand the Patrick Jane backstory. While the character is smug and often flip, his quest for revenge and the damage he's hiding offset most of the smugness, because you know it's armor. Personally, I like the interplay with Robin Tunney, Tim Kang is very good, and Amanda Righetti, well, what can I say? If the plot slows, I can always just look at her.

As far as NCIS, all the seasons are great - if you start with season 1, there is definitely an ongoing storyline all the way through. Season 1 had Catherine in it, though instead of Ziva. I, personally, liked her better, although I do kinda like Ziva.

Yeah, Supernatural has tons of humor. There's an episode where Dean is infected by some kind of fear thing, and it's hilarious. The show makes fun of itself regularly, too. Probably more humor in later seasons but definitely keep looking if you want to see the lighter side of the show.

And the Mentalist I really enjoy. He's just so charmingly manipulative, but when he tells the boss his intentions about when they catch Red Simon, you can see just how deeply damaged the man is, too.

I just discovered NCIS a few months ago and am now watching everything I can find. It has both great character development and the ability to just drop in. Brilliant. I discovered JAG only a couple of years ago and am delighted that it is still on the air. I also love Mentalist, but you have to see the first episode and be intrigued with the whole body language / subtle clues thing - which I am. While I have loved the CSIs, I am getting tired of gruesome scenes so this is a nice break. Also love Burn Notice and In Plain Sight.

I cant say the best season but I can tell you some of the best episodes:
Season 2- Call of Silence
Season 3- Kill Ari 1&2, Hiatus 1&2
Season 4- Escaped, Twisted Sister, Deadman Walking, Angel of Death
Season 5- Requiem, The Ex-file
Season 6- Legend 1&2, Heartland, Cloak, Dagger

Some of these focus on Gibbs backstory, but everyone else is an open book so when you see what makes him tick it is more impactful and very enlightening. He is the driving force of the team so his backstory effects how he and his team work. I think Tony is one of the best characters he is a player, but you see there is a lot more to him than that.

I love NCIS and have since the beginning, it's one of my must see shows. I also love love love the Mentalist. As others have written, Patrick's "smugness" isn't really. It's his way of protecting himself. His backstory is that he pretended to be physcic to make money and smugly(!) taunted a serial killer on the air. He went home to find his wife and child brutally murdered by this killer. He had a breakdown and was institutionalized. Now he only searches for killers and hopes to find the man who killed his family. If you know this, I think it is much easier to understand his attitude.

He made a two-dimensional, skirt-chasing Tony into a man with real character. I'm just sorry he had to get his heart broken in the process. As much as I like the Ziva character, her presence at NCIS is unbelievable, so I have a bit of trouble with it. We'll see what happens next season!!

Supernatural is very angsty, yes, and you picked a particularly angsty episode to start with. While the humor is often dark, it is there. Season 3's "Bad Day at Black Rock" and "Ghostfacers" were pretty funny, and season 4's "The Monster at the End of This Book" is possibly the best thing ever.

Toby, you mentioned West Wing, and Mark Harmon's role on NCIS came directly out of his several episode appearance on West Wing as a Secret Service agent. Paige Newman must be one of the few not to like Harmon, he is one of the most popular actors on TV.

Mentalist is a good show but I never get to watch - they keep putting it opposite something else. Now it has been moved directly opposite Burn Notice, so forget that. Simon Baker is good in the role. I loved his old gloomy role in The Guardian, and I'm surprised I like his cheerful role so much this time, but I do.

Start watching NCIS from the beginning; Abby's attitude was calmer and she was not so hyped up on caffeine drinks, Gibbs actually smiled more than once an episode, and Ducky was not so Ducky! It's great to see how the tweaking of their characters made them become the extended family that we can all relate to. I agree with the other comments about The Mentalist. You have to see the other episodes to understand why Jane acts the way he does. It's not a show you can jump into and "get".
Supernatural is often funny, if you have a twisted sense of humor. :P Most shows don't have EVERYTHING laid out and included in each and every episode. You should know that by now.
NCIS should probably be started from season 1. Though, you learn a lot about each character in different seasons, so it depends on who you want to know the most about. Tough call.
I can't stand the actors in Two and a Half Men, won't watch a thing with them in it. Yuck.

You have to start at the beginning with Supernatural--this was a season 4 episode, and so you missed the character dynamics and the hows and whys. My husband started watching this show with me, and he enjoys it almost as much as I do. If nothing else, go to IMDB.com and check out the show quotes and trivia. There's humor throughout.

I watch all of these except for Two and a Half Men. Love them all. Supernatural is a riot sometimes - you just caught one of the "darker" episodes. Give it more of a chance - it really is addictive. NCIS is fabulous with the exception of the Tony/Jeanne season which was only tolerable. The first three are probably your best bets.

I love NCIS, I dvr every single episode, I originally started watching it also because of Mark Harmon, I have carried a torch form him since he was in this show called 240 Robert, with John Bennett Perry & Joanna Cassidy, after that I was hooked and watched everything he was in. However, NCIS is my favorite Harmon venue. My favorite line is when Tony is describing wat a rio is and then said its also known as a gib 1 B and Kate asks why Gibbs needs 2 adn he says the other stands for bastard.. Although I started watching because of him, I love all the characters they just blend so well together...
The Illya Kyriakin line was classic also.. Sadly though I dont think anyone under the age of 25 actually understood that...

I just wanted to say that it is a little hard to watch Supernatural starting with the newest season. While the episode where Dean is sent back is a good episode, it doesn't have a whole lot of humor. And all of the humor in the show is more Dean's little one-line zingers. "Demons, I get. People, not so much." There was also a great episode that was pretty much making fun of Ghost Hunters. So try it from the beginning of a season, and pay attention to the first few minutes where they give a recap of previous episodes that are relevant to the one they're showing. It's a damn good show, I got my girlfriend hooked with a single episode from season 4 and then she insisted on watching the first 3 seasons.

NCIS, is the SHOW to watch. I have seen every episode over and over and over again. "Eye Candy", Harmon and Weatherly, both qualify. But I am a "Ducky" man and watched him as Ilya Kurikin also. Was in LOVE with him then and now. Soo, Gibbs or Ducky?? Hard choice.
All seasons the best, but the end of this one the most reviting I do believe. Can not wait too see how they finish this one!!!

It's so hard to pick a favorite season of NCIS, though I do agree with others that it just keeps getting better and better. There's no bad season, per se, so you might as well start at the beginning.

And though I don't have a favorite season, I absolutely have a favorite episode - Call of Silence from season 2. Particularly touching if you know that the guest star, Charles Durning, is a WWII vet who was on the front lines for some of the most heroic and horrific moments of the war (Normandy and the liberation of one of the concentration camps). Also, it's prime example of Gibbs full devotion to ensuring justice for the men and women in uniform.

Wow, I didn't realize there was so much passion for NCIS. Personally, I think it is one of the worst shows on television. The characters are over the top and very annoying. The way they solve cases is next to impossible most of the time. The two agents that work under Harmon are complete dopes and would never hack it in a real investigative agency. NCIS has been one of my favorites since the first episode. Any show that offers Mark Harmon and David McCallum has to have something on the ball, and the other cast members are mostly great too. The new NCIS:LA I will probably pass on. To me, the ensemble cast of NCIS is as much of a draw as any storyline they can come up with. I wasn't impressed with the cast of the spin-off and I don't care for shows that feature constant action.

The Mentalist is also one of my favorites. Patrick Jane is like House in some ways: they are both damaged and wear a coat of protective armor. I like to watch Jane bob and weave his way through the storyline. I'll continue watching both shows. And I am delighted that CBS is picking up Medium, which I enjoy. NBC's loss; CBS's gain.

Hands down I choose NCIS as my all time favorite. Started watching re-runs earlier this year and have become addicted. The Bellasario Team has some of the best writers, and actors on TV. Like the way Gibbs works his team. And that Michael Weatherly (Tony) sure helps me get through my days even with my cataracts I know EYE CANDY when I see it! . Everyone of the actors is outstanding.

One of my favorite lines was from the episode at the airport while the team is waiting to go through TSA security with their weapons.
Gibbs: "We're LEOs". (Law Enforcement Officers to those in the know)
TSA Guy:" I'm an Aquarius and today is a . . . . . . Blah, Blah Blah.
Also like the reference to Ducky when he was in the Man From U.N.C.L.E.

In response to your query of whether to continue watching Supernatural, I give you a resounding YES; there is alot of humor (I can't compare this with Buffy, never having watched it). However, its main draw is the story of family values and loyalty, mixed in with a megadose of testosterone in the form of a badass classic automobile, classic rock and gore. Honestly, in all my decades of television viewing I have never been so invested in a series before. Please give it a go. You've stepped in at a good time as the early reruns for season 4 have just begun(the episode you watched was #3). I recommend you view the previous seasons because they will provide you a better idea of the characters' psyches and their tale of Americana tragedy that's brought them to where they are today.

BTW, on House, I find the idea of a group of doctors running in and doing their own ultrasounds and CAT scans pretty ridiculous. House and his group of scouts are always doing exams and procedures that in any other hospital I've heard of would be assigned to the technologists who have been trained to perform these tests on a daily basis. The writers of House must not be concerned with the way things are actually done in most hospitals.

However, Supernatural is the show I look forward to every week. They either have very serious, mythology related episodes (which is the one you watched), or ones that are very funny. I especially loved the episode (first or second season I think) where Dean and Sam are playing practical jokes on one another. And then there are the episodes with the trickster. I recommend starting from the beginning and watch the four seasons before season 5 (supposedly the last) airs. Let's hope they tie up loose ends, like what happened to jo and elle harvelle? Or the meg demon.

NCIS is the best on TV. The team works well together and everyone on it has a little something special to bring to the table. I never watch Supernatural. Two and a Half Men is funny and family friendly, I suspect that's not really what YOU are looking for. The Mentalist is good but you need the back story to understand it all, also, you might remember Tim Kang from several other shows and commercials, he is great. If you want really funny stuff, watch The Big Bang Theory, also family friendly but really funny.

I discovered NCIS last Fall and my wife and I have seen every episode of the six years as of two weeks ago. The ongoing arc of the show is what makes it most interesting. The characters evolve. Something which happened in Season Two will pop up in Season Five, etc.

Two shows from Season Five, Chimera and Requiem, NEVER seem to be in the rotation. Why, I have no idea.

The Pilot, which was two episodes of JAG, also come up really rarely. I saw all of these via Netflix.

Next season should be a doozy, with Ziva's situation in flux and the possible change of Directors. Spend the Summer catching up. It will be well worth your time.

Also, in "Twisted Sister", the girl who plays Mcgee's sis is actually his stepsister (producer's daughter). In one episode about Gibbs' past, the guy who plays youger Gibbs is actually his son. I love NCIS. But I didn't start watching it until the second season. I caught some early episodes when USA started running the show, and was really surprised at how the characters had evolved since the beginning. For example, in the early episodes, Tony's comments indicated that he was not a fan of movies because he didn't catch several movie references that Kate and Gibbs made. Now he's the resident expert and compares everything to a movie. I have loved Mark Harmon since St. Elsewhere! And watching Michael Weatherly playing such a physical role after his time in Dark Angel was a real treat. And what can you say about David McCallum. He's the whole reason I watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. while growing up.

I think NCIS could end up being one of the all-time great dramas on network TV. I just started watching it cause I watched JAG, but through the years each of the stars has fully developed his/her character into a fully-developed and interesting human, not just a 'TV character'. There's virtually no 'soap opera' on this show, no overblown Hollywood emotionalism/romances. Thank you, thank you!! It's now better than all the CSI shows, none of which are developing great lead characters, and all CSI's are so incessantly gloomy. NCIS is a do not-miss. The Mentalist deserves another look, too. Supernatural is an awesome show! It's a good mix of the X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and has a lot of good humor you just have to give it more of a chance and start watching it from the begining. This is one of my favorite shows and I have gotten alot of other people to watch it and they all like it.
NCIS is also a great show. I didn't start watching this show in the beginning because I wasn't sure if I would be able to take Mark Harmon seriously in this role but he surprised me. I started to watch this show when the USA network started showing reruns and now I can't get enough of the show. One of my favorite shows was called Undercover and Tony and Ziva go undercover and pose as a married assisins. There are alot of other good ones but this is one of my favorites.
I would suggest that you keep watching Supernatural and NCIS because there isn't alot of other good shows left out there. I also got my husband to start watching these shows with me and now he loves them both so don't give up on these two shows.

I was glad to see Director Shepard replaced as she didn't seem a good fit for the Director's role. My favorite character is Ducky, hands down. What a great, varied and long career David McCallum has had. He's perfect as the slightly askew chief pathologist, who holds conversations with his "patients" on the autopsy table! I started watching NCIS by default, a year or two ago, around the time Ziva joined the team. I don't think I would have gotten hooked without her, although Abby is awesome. My 13 year old daughter immediately got a crush on Michael Weatherly and I believe Mark Harmon has never had a chance to really develop a character until this show. I've watched earlier shows in reruns; Gibbs was too rigid; DeNozo too hound dog; Kate just kind of lame; McGee just kind of blank. This show has definitely grown and deepened with time into something wonderful. Also, for David McCallum: You have to see the one where they use the computer to go reverse age a guest character who happens to resemble Ducky. Yep, Illya again; even my daughters agree he was hot!

The Mentalist, I want to like it, but really only find it marginally above 'Murder She Wrote." You have to love blondes, Ozzies or Baker to believe his back story can make this show worth watching. The two male cops are good and should find something better than this.

2/12 Men: Guilty pleasure! I knew I hated it without ever watching. My husband started watching. It's a male fantasy with some great writing. It's nice to have a geek character, too, as Cryer and Sheen really play off each other. And that kid is priceless. When they refer to the kid, it is just like a real family -- not so charming and Cosby-like. Mom and Berta are great, too.

It's neat to see how they do that - which is probably why the make a point of mentioning the music used in each episode.

The Mentalist is a good show, too...I don't see Jane as being smug, but, like many others have mentioned, I watched the show from the beginning. And, if you see the episodes where he goes back and helps the families heal in some way, you would see the heart that his character has. I even have my hubby watching this one now...

Walter McClure: The reason NCIS gets involved in a case is usually because it is a Navy sailor or Marine who is killed. Or sometimes a civilian is killed on military base. They always explain jurisdiction, as there is usually some sort of disagreement with the "local LEOs." Bottom line, there is ALWAYS a Navy/Marine connection, which automatically makes it their jurisdiction.

Ditto on Supernatural, I always LOL at least once while watching. "Bad Day at Black ROck" was hilarious (it's fresh in my memory because I just watched it last week). But the one Paige watched was probably the worst one she could've seen from a "newcomer looking for fun & humor" perspective. It was a pretty heavy episode.

Love, love LOVE The Mentalist! Even with his quirks (or because of them), Patrick Jane is so charmingly disarming. I liked the one about the Vegas casino owner who was killed, and the guy who was under witness protection... there's a great scene of Jane on the golf course with a mob boss.

I watch NCIS every week--and the episodes in previous years on another station. You need to be kinder to Mark Harmon. Every week in the ratings in Dallas, NCIS is in the top ratings of daily shows--usually number 3 or 6.

The mentalist is enjoyable.One can see twists and turns. How he determines who is the murderer is interesting.

Two and a Half Men is funny and great to watch. We are no longer watching it, because of reference to his sexual origins and women sleeping over. That typically would not bother me except that this show is on about 8:30 pm and some kids are watching the show. The children, preteens, and some young teens get the idea that having early sexual experiences is okay because it is on TV or iis n the movies. We hear about the continuing rise of teen pregnacy-parents need to watch what their children watch and or go to movies.

Can't agree more on the apology to NCIS. I always gave/give my husband a hard time about all his "cops and robbers" shows, such as CSI, Law & Order, L&O SVU, but NCIS is head and shoulders above them all. I get so bored with the same old rigamarole the actors trot out in CSI and the L&O shows (maybe the script requires it) -- they never get much depth. Plus I really, really, really, really hate the L&O "CONK CONK" scene-switching sound effect (the one that is supposed to resemble a gavel).

Every season of NCIS has built upon the last when it comes to character development and context. I LOVE the Abby character and she and McGee together have a cute dynamic. I also like that Gibbs' character doesn't reveal every bit of himself, ever.

P.S. I hate nearly all the drivel that comes out of the idiot box, as my father used to call it, but this is worth your time.

Last night I just rewatched the NCIS show about Charles Durning playing a Congressional Medal-awarded corporal from WWII trying to turn himself in for killing his best friend at Okinawa. It's the best NCIS show they've ever done.

I miss Kate. I sit in awe that David McCallum is still vibrant 40 years after he created Ilya Kuryakin on "Man From Uncle".

I've always liked Mark Harmon. Pauley Perrette is charismatic, Cote de Pablo had a fascinating season finale.

I only wish Michael Weatherly could someday be as sincerely dramatic as he was in "Dark Angel". But there's still that terrific episode where he contracted bubonic plague, struggling through it with the best "movie lines" the show's ever written for him.

Sean Murray plays one of the best computer nerds
ever, enough to make you forget he's the producer's stepson. Other than that, it's notable that their RERUNS still get 13 million viewers a week. My husband insisted we watch this show, now I'm watching right along with him.

I am not generally a dedicated TV watcher; I just used to watch specific programmes, e.g. Masterpiece Theatre, Mystery, Nature, etc. However I recently discovered NCIS reruns on USA and have been thoroughly enjoying the episodes. I took to the series because unlike most crime series NCIS focus on forensics, IT, and good old fashion policing to solve cases. Supernatural has a lot of humor, but you chose a strange episode to start with. Try the episodes...Monster at the end of the book, ghostfacers, hollywood babylon, criss angel is a douche bag, for more humor related episodes. This past season has been a bit angst-ridden with the just got out of hell, lets stop the apocalypse theme, but it still had plenty of humor. Overall this show has a great storyline about family and the pain, sacrifice, and love that goes along with it.

A few things on NCIS.

I see a lot of praise for Bellesario. And while he is deserving of it in the early seasons he has been pretty much thrown out (ala Aaron Sorkin) for being difficult to work with and never being able to meet deadlines. There are stories that Mark Harmon issued a "him or me" edict two years back and the studio pushed him out. At his point in relation to the day to day activites he is pretty much associated in name only. Which im sure is fun around the holidays since he is currently married to the actor that plays McGees mother

Second and much more fun fact is that the entire main cast does not watch dailies or go into the editng process. They get together almost every Tuesday Night at the actress that plays Abbys house and watch along with the rest of us.

My favorite episodes are "Call to Silence" from Season 2 (watched it last night on DVD, in fact) and "Iced" from Season 3. One of my favorite lines from "Iced" is near the end when Director Shephard asks Gibbs if there's enough evidence to convict and he says "It depends on the jury." When he drives Cesar back home, you suddenly realize which jury he's talking about.

And yes, the quip about what Ducky looked like when he was younger was hilarious. My brother and I both LOL'd while a much younger person in the room just looked confused - which only added to the hilarity.

I have been a Mark Harmon fan since he played Ted Bundy in "A Deliberate Stranger" and totally went outside of his normal character. Have tuned into NCIS since it came on the air and maybe have missed one or two episodes...great character development and interaction between all and the plots keep you guessing...great show.

The reason I like 2-1/2 men is because of what it's not. It's not focused on how stupid/inept the husband is and it's not focused on the child or how cute the child is. Charlie is completely unapolagetic for being a womanizer. The child is not intended to be cute, smart, endearing and I find that very refreshing in a sitcom (where normaly the child HAS to be the focus). I'll admit that sometimes I get tired of Alan's whining, but I find the show quite funny. And Big Bang Theory is a major hoot. Since I'm a big nerd, I get all the jokes.

NCIS is a great show! So good, they are now doing a spinoff. The only way to truly appreciate NCIS as a whole is to watch each of the different season's shows from the beginning, forward. Each show has a tidbit that carries forward such as the tidbit concerning Duckie and the reference it Illya Kuryakin.

The Mentalist is another great show, but one that really does have to be seen from the very start to make sense of it.

Other favs - Bones, all the CSI's (most particularly, CSi - NY).

And finally Castle, love it too!

You hit the nail on the head with "Three and a Half Men". The least intelligent of all comedies on TV. Canned laughter doesn't help either. Not at all funny. Further evidence of the decline of western civilization as we know it.

For me one of the few good things to come out of the writers strike was I watched NCIS and was totally surprised by the quality. Something CBS is bad at in my book. There are good stories, humor and ALL the characters are really good. BTW, everybody loves Abs.

Regarding NCIS....ALL of them, I have been a faithful watcher from day one...and still to this day watch reruns from the beginning. NCIS is phenomenal! It is by far superior to most other tv series - especially CSI-Miami. (I also enjoy House and Burn Notice) NCIS has a sense of humor; CSI rarely does. In fact the CSI actors look strained and constipated. I think CSI relies on the blue-green-yellow lighting found in ALL scenes and the grotesque crime & morgue scenes. NCIS actors are easy to relate too, funny at times, serious at other times. Story line is always surprising and interesting -though I avoid some morgue scenes. ALL NCIS seasons are great! 2 1/2 Men = waste of time.

I tried the Mentalist from the beginning, but couldn't get into it. I've always had an aversion to NCIS for some reason, but someday I *might* check it out on DVD just to see what all the fuss is about.
I hate 2 1/2 Men. I can't stand either main actor and often wonder how and why they have a show, and any time I accidentally see a bit of the show, it feels very cheesy, forced, out of date, and generic. I too much prefer the blend of sharp and silly that the Office and 30 Rock, and the dearly departed Arrested Development, provide.

If you want to add to the back references, during the Frame-up episode, while Ducky was examining the bite mark on the severed legs, he makes reference to Ted Bundy to Gibbs. As we all know, Mark Harmon played Ted Bundy. Also the guy who played Chip, they psycho lab assistant,is Bellasario's son.

NCIS is fantastic and being a HUGE FAN of Abby, I would say avoid season 1 for now. She was just not the Abby we all now know and love and quite frankly, I think season 1 can be a little off putting. It took time to build up the rapport that, in my humble opinion, really makes the show work. For that reason, I'd start with season 2 to see Kate in action and for more Ziva, hit up season 4. Season 4's "Witch Hunt" was a lot of fun. IMO, season 4 is the best of the bunch particularly with the onset of the "La Grenouille" storyline.

I would definately watch all the seasons of NCIS. I actually just watched the first few seasons on USA while I was watching season 5 on CBS. Its a great show. And to see the dynamics between all the main characters is what makes the show.

Regarding Supernatural, they def have their funny moments. Its not like Buffy where every episode had something humerous said or going on. Supernatural is def a bit darker but seeing the relationship between the Winchester brothers and everything they have been through, it is a must see.

I agree with you regarding the mentalist. I like Simon Baker but his character is way too annoying. He is too all knowing and that makes him not likable. I tried watching the first few episodes and then had to stop.

NCIS only gets better the more you watch it. The great continuity of some of the things that are mentioned in the show are a really great bonus for die hard fans. I'd say my favorite season has to be the most recent one of season six. If you're going to Netflix them though I suggest starting at the beginning and working your way through. Thats how I became addicted!

Michael Weatherly is fantastic as Tony DiNozzo on NCIS. Very easy on the eyes and what a voice! He plays the most interesting character to boot. At times he's a goofball and yet capable of being team leader and hero when the situation arises. He's the only character to show such depth. Keep watching NCIS

Two and a Half Men was wonderful the first 2 seasons when 'Jake' was younger and Alan more of a nerd. Now it's not so good. You do need to see the episode with Jake trying sushi and then yelling 'squab' as he jumps from behind the sofa at his grandmother's - the great Holland Taylor. It is as classic as Reverand Jim on Taxi with his 'What does a yellow light mean?' while taking his drivers test.

Supernatural is an incredible show that includes quite a bit of humor if you know where to look. Some episodes are a nice blend of both angst and comedy. Season 4 has been darker than previous seasons, but at the same time has it's gems.

S1 Ep4 "Phantom Traveler" - A demon on a plane and Dean is terrified of flying. This is the first time we see a crack in Dean's shell. Jensen Ackles who plays Dean has a rubber face at times that blasts Jim Carrey out of the water.

S1 Ep17 "Hell House" - Where in we are introduced to a couple of wanna be ghost hunters and the brothers Winchester indulge themselves in a prank war.

S2 Ep15 "Tall Tales" - A job sees the Winchester brothers at one another's throats when they investigate classic urban legends from alien abductions to gators in the sewer.

For you fellow NCIS fans, if you get ION tv (Dish Network), they show reruns on that channel in addition to USA.

I think what I love the most about NCIS is the humor, maybe it's just a little tidbit but it pops up in every episode.

My other current fave is In Plain Sight on USA. Started watching it as a fluke, and got hooked. Again it's the combination of humor and drama.

You can't jump into Supernatural at that episode and get it. The "angel" that helped him go back in time yanked him out of hell in the first episode of this season (he had been dragged into hell by Hellhounds because he had made a deal with the crossroads demon to bring his brother back from the dead). By the way, Dean was similarly saved from death by their father at the beginning of season 2 I believe. This show has gotten better every season. I am thrilled that it was able to survive and grow. Can't wait to see the first episode next year. As someone mentioned, there are laughs to lighten the mood. Dean running for his life from a tiny poodle because he was infected with fear was hilarious. But, killing demons, vampires, werewolves, sirens, ghouls, etc. is dark business. The angels are pretty freakin scary too. The main angel basically tricked this religious dude into being his vessel, yanking him from his family with no sign of where he went or what happened to him. Pretty sick.

"Supernatural" is a lot like "The X-Files". It can be funny, it's generally serious, and it has a handful of episodes each season devoted to lightening the mood.

If you're looking for the funny episodes, though? Don't just go by the episode names. They're usually meta jokes and don't reflect the overall tone. ("Jump the Shark" for example - one of the darker episodes this past season.)

Pete F: point of correction. Mcgee's mother has never been seen on NCIS. What you're probably thinking of is that the actor who plays McGee (Sean Murray) also had a small recurring role in JAG. On that show, his mother was dating the head of JAG. In real life Murray is Donald Belisario's step-son, but Murray's real mother never appeared on either show (JAG or NCIS).

I watch NCIS some of the time, but have been caught in MEGA- marathons becuase my Mom has ALL of the DVD sets. It's pretty good,I like Ziva a lot more than Kate. She was way too stiff and snooty. mmsg to Craig. CT. If you dont like the show why do you watch it? mmsg to Walter. You can get much info about the real NCIS on the internet. Although they investigate only criminal activity involving the navy and the marine corp, they are civilians and do not have to answer to either branch. I have liked the show more since Kate left. She was extremely arrogant and irritating. The way the producers and actors continue to develope the characters over the years but still keep interesting story lines is what I think helps set this show apart from all of the other CSI type shows. None of which I watch anymore. If I had to pick a favorite actor from the show, I couldnt.
If I had to pick character, I couldnt do that either.
But I would love to see Vance disappear. Be sure to watch the commentarys on the DVDs. They give a great insight into the actors and the characters they portray. Pauley is the only one who always refers to her character as Abby and not Me or I. She is the only one who doesnt slip up on that.

The appeal of NCIS is the ensemble cast and each character actually has a personailty and a life outside of work. NCIS may not be unique in this regard but it is the best of curent shows. The show is also morally ambiguous - unusual in today's politically correct climate. So you can watch a show and be challenged by it, not just entertainhed by it.

I agree with everybody regarding NCIS, my husband got me sucked in to it and now every episode I see is great.
Unfortunately my husband also loves Two and a Half Men, which has got to be the worst show currently on t.v. If you've seen one episode, you've seen them all. Charlie is such a tool (I know it's just a part he's playing but I don't think it's much of a stretch acting-wise for Charlie Sheen). I do love Holland Taylor, but she doesn't show up much any more. I agree with the "Three's Company" comparison, I can feel myself losing brain cells every time I watch.

You definitely started with a myth-heavy episode of Supernatural, and the one after it isn't exactly a barrel of monkeys either. But, besides being one of the tightest, most well-written shows I've watched since Buffy and Angel went away, it can be downright HILARIOUS (ever wondered what would happen if a teddy bear tried to commit suicide?).

And yeah, they're tortured characters, but both for different reasons, so they tend to cancel each other out. Usually, one of them doesn't want to talk about it and the other one doesn't want to hear it.

I recently caught my first few episodes of NCIS, and it seemed fairly painless. Pleasant, if not compelling entertainment.

Supernatural holds a much bigger chunk of my heart. If you do watch further episodes and become more familiar with the characters and mythology, I'll bet dollars to donuts that if you rewatch "In the Beginning" you'll find it much funnier. Much of the humour in that episode were subtle references to established history, such as Dean's "I'm going to Hell--again", or him pimping the Impala to his dad, or finding out that he was named for his grandmother. Even the TAB ad on the bench he woke up on was a humourous homage to "Back to the Future".

Happy summer viewing, whichever shows you choose.

For someone who's never watched Supernatural, "In the Beginning" was not the best episode to get an overall sense of the show. There is indeed a lot of humour, most of it coming from Dean with his very off-beat, quirky one-liners. At the same time there's also incredible drama. This show is just brilliant, and wholly underrated. People clearly just don't know what they're missing - a jewel. Had it been on any other network, Jensen Ackles at least would have pocketed an Emmy by now. Do yourself a favour and watch it from the start. It just gets better and better.

And yes, the humor is there, and often. But don't watch if you're not interested in great drama and wonderful acting performances. If you're looking for a sitcom, you'll have to watch the Simpsons.

I started watching NCIS, a few weeks into it's third season, after avoiding it from the beginning, though my daughter urged me all along to give it a try. Was hooked within the first 20 minutes and haven't missed an episode since. I ended up watching a repeat of a first season episode, before Ziva was added as a character, and Kate was with the team, and had to watch all of the first season, and bought the dvd set. Tuesday nights at 8pm finds me in front of my tv, and I'm not someone who watches a lot of television. It's hard to recommend one season to start with, all of them are great. One of my favorite eps is Bête Noire, that's from the first season.

I love NCIS (and, as others have mentioned, JAG). It's great to see an actor like Mark Harmon who started out as a pretty-boy mature into a much more interesting actor. I particularly like the interaction between Gibbs and Abby; there's an interesting dynamic there.

Oh, and I REALLY like the fact that they keep the sexual tensions light and kind of not-gonna-happen between the main crew. You can feel it, it adds spark their interactions, but there's no messy "they hooked up so one has to leave the show or die" business (well, except for Jenny, I guess). Or see the classic example of how the main characters getting their groove on together ruined "Moonlighting".

I love NCIS. I watch every week. Love all the characters. They work off each other beautifully. I can watch it over and over. When the marathons are on I can sit in front of the TV and just watch. Love Harmon and his crew and yes the best line is I am just starting to watch the Mentalist so can not comment yet. It does seem pretty good though. I agree with jrzygrl I liked the statement about Duckie being called Illya Kyriakin. I like the Man from Uncle too.

NCIS will never be beaten ...they may take it off in a few years, but will not remove it from our minds and hearts..those people are wonderful, natural and the best. I cannot say that for Ziva, never liked her, wish she would not come back, loved Katlyn..and of course Gibby...my love for over 40 years...

Never miss NCIS. Well worth watching from the start. Favorite characters? Abby and Ziva! Love how they handle the guys. Best episodes? I just can't decide. Having been a military brat, I love how it shows the military in a postive light.
