This is really not a big surprise to anyone I could imagine. I think the majority of fans have felt from the beggining that the Lost Island is either Hell or Purgatory (which only got more and more convincing this season) and based on that, where could Micheal go? Damon Lindelof and Micheal Hughes would NEVER just let a character wander off like that on a show when even those Killed-off have at least come back as ghosts. It was Obvious to most that Micheal would return.. what's surprising to me is that they didn't bring him back at ALL in season 3. I figured he might've been part of the finale but only Walt was cast for getting Locke out of the body-pit. It was never a matter of IF, it was only a matter of WHEN.

Basically it is a math equation that predicts the end of the world and the purpose of the Hanso Foundation was to change the numbers to save the world.

Michael's character definitely wasn't wasted. I'm glad he's coming back. I always felt he was as much a leader as Jack or Locke -- and without their baggage (Locke's a loner and Jack doesn't want to be a leader). His interactions with both Sun and Jin were great, and he's the one who built the raft! Even the murders of A-L and Libby were done to protect/get back his son. Wish he'd smile more, hope he's not a bad guy (was he the funeral that no one would attend?), and poor Hurley's gonna hate him!

Steven, don't be too quick to speak for the majority. That is one of the theories, but many Lost fans have 2 or 3 other theories about what's happening. That's one of the things that makes Lost great. Just when you have it figured out, they toss out a twist and it blows your theory out of the water. That said, I can't wait for next season. Will they stick with the flashbacks or continue with the flashforwards? Will they do both and leave clues to which time period they are in?

I obviously dont know more then anyone else here, but somehow, I think that this entire story is the typical good vs evil storylyine, the issue being, who is evil, and who is good.

I think that we will find out that botht eht survivors and the others are the good guys, and that this other OTHER group is the evil ones.

Walt and Michael were probably with, inadvertantly or however, this new group of others, and they will probably play a role later on, and I would not be surprised that michael ends o=up dying in an attempt to save or free the other survivors. A way to get foregiveness.

I do agree that it was probably Walt in the casket, and of corse no one there, no parents, and teh survivors probably resented his role or his fathers role from the island.

Anyways, this story needs to be more regular broadcasts, not a group of episodes once or twice a year. This is ridiculous. Like what, not enough money if they actually give us what we want???

As a big fan of LOST, I have one thing that nags me. What ever happened to the full season tv shows. This making 4 to 6 epesodes at a time and letting us hang while they repeat the same epesodes might be good for the producers bottom line, but makes me get close to giving up waiting. The long gaps in the Sepranos for instance is what really blew the rythem of the show and is why so many fans lost the initial super intrust we all had. At least there is new ideas being presented on LOST and not just rehashed plots. But if you took the book I was really into away every time it got me inthrawled and made me wait to get it back, I can just say the book would lose some of its luster. Lets have a full season for a change if anyone from the show is reading these coments, I know I am not alone.

I know I know I know.. the idea of Hell or Purgatory was shot down in season 1.. I KNOW the producers emphatically denied it was the case over and over again, but at the same time they keep giving us scenes like Lockes' Father telling Sawyer he was whacked and woke up there and they're in HELL, and the Helicopter Pilot (who probably died in her landing) saying they discovered the plane and Everyone was DEAD.. if they dont want people to think that why do they keep feeding us details that would completely support it? My guess is that was the shows intent in the beggining and people simply caught on too quick so they HAD to deny it to leave people guessing (which is Obviously Lost's Strength). So maybe they're just trying to throw as many other possibilities out there, hoping that people ignore and forget that possible conclusion so when the end finally comes it can be explained that way with at least a Little surprise to it.

Then again, they really put a damper on that idea by forwarding to the future with Jack and Kate. (Hey, maybe they made a deal with the devil to return :))

But anyway... Hell or not, I think everyone was in agreement that Micheal would return. Even if only in Ghost form.

What WOULD be Shocking is if they brought back Arnst. ("Dude... you got some Arnst on your shoulder.")

Regarding Charlie's death: We didn't actually see him die. Any place where Locke's Dad / Sawyer's nemesis can appear "out of nowhere" could easily allow Charlie to disappear "into nowhere." The writers have a zillion ways to save him and bring him back, whether on the island or in the flash-forwards. Perhaps Charlie survived, got away from the island, and is working with Elvis at a (Kwix-E-Mart remodeled) 7-11 in Wyoming (just for grins, as he is rolling in dough from a Swiss bank account, into which is periodically deposited royalties from Driveshaft media sales, which have skyrocketed since the news of his "death").

The small casket in the flashforward seemed too small for Walt, who was growing up as we watched and would doubtless be bigger in the flashforward future. Maybe Claire's kid was inside, and perhaps the reluctance of people to go to the funeral had to do with some perfidy of Claire's, to be revealed later, or with their own, such that it caused Aaron's illness or injury. For instance, suppose that Kate's and Jack's efforts led not just to the rescue of everyone from the island, but the NECESSITY for everyone to leave the island, never to return. Then suppose that the strange aura around the island had been the only thing keeping Aaron (and perhaps also Claire) alive and healthy (remember, "the Others" were surprised that he and Claire didn't die in the first place). Not being able to return to the island would doom Aaron, for which Jack and Kate would share great guilt and become personae non grata to Claire, assuming that she survived as well; perhaps she was also dead by the time of the flashforward, or incapacitated via terminal illness.

Well that tears it! Now I'm all worked up from new-season theorizing! Let's make with the fresh episodes already! ;-)

Tim...don't think you need to worry about them breaking up Lost's season this year. They will not start showing new episodes until JAN or FEB '08, and then will the full 18-episode season straight thru, with no repeats.

As for Walt and Michael...it will be hard for the castaways to accept Michael back in to the fold, especially Hurley, who lost the great love of his life to Michael's murderous treason. As for Walt, how are they going to explain that he's grown 18 inches and his voice got deep in the 90 days they've been on the island? Maybe Walt and Michael will only return in the flash-forward episodes, not on the island.

I thought Cooper's line about Hell was great. It says something deliciously sinister about the people who abducted him out of thin air just so he could regain concsiousness right in time to be murdered in the ruins of an 18th century slave ship beached miles inland on a far away, hidden, tropical island by his supposedly "dead" son and the son of one of his random victims from over 20 years ago. I think most people would have the delusion that they were in hell if that happened to them; he kind of went insane.

For me, I'm excited for the rest of the series to start putting the conspiracy elements of the story together so we can find out how the characters fit into it all -- Widmore, Hanso, etc.

I read a forum somewhere and someone there made the most convincing argument for what is going on in this show (and just listen to my reasons before writing it off): the losties are all stuck in some sort of parallel universe or better yet, a place between universes. If you saw the movie Star Trek Generations, think of Dr. Soran's Nexus.
There are numerous things that support this. The normal laws of physics don't apply in there. It would explain that in the plane crash, everyone really did die in the normal universe, but the plane also traversed into this special island between universes where everyone is alive too. It explains how the girl that parachuted as well as one other character told them the plane was found and their bodies were found. How could the plane have crashed and everyone died (according to two of the characters), yet everyone be there on the island? The only thing that could explain it would be a parallel universe of sorts. The way people get there to the island is a Bermuda Triangle sort of affect. Once you get near it, you are in it, and thus lost to the outside world. That would explain why Desmond sailed away from the island for a month but kept coming on it, yet Michael and Walt, given the proper coordinates, may have been able to exit it. It may also explain why new babies can't be born on the island because they wouldn't have a native universe, they would be from no universe at all, as opposed to Claire's baby who was not conceived there, but concieved in a regular universe.
It also could explain why Jack doesn't feel like he belongs back home and wants to go back to the island. What if, when they left the island, they went back to a universe that was not theirs? Think Sliders.
Also, it could explain how Rose doesn't have cancer, Jin can knock up Sun, and Locke can walk. I had some other reasons, but I can't think of them now. I think this theory does answer quite a bit, though. The producers have never denied this theory, unlike the heaven/hell/purgatory stuff.

Suppose the idea was to see if people could form a self governing society from scratch? (say after a world war). There has been much written about the use of "names" in an historical way. (John Locke, et el)Perhaps lost is more of a "nation" building experiment gone wrong. There are hints of a civil war, (Ben and Dharma) as well as the start of a revolotion. (plane people against Others) We also have the common man being "worth something." Look at how a low life fisherman becomes valued. In Korea he would always be lower class. Not on the island. To do this, the writers would have begun to kill off all technology and outside contact so the islanders must begin at the beginning. This would force the two groups to come together. All outside contact has now been severed, thanks to John destroying the com building and sub. We have sacrifice of Charlie for the good of the many. We have religous overtones, but more mystical. Each person or couple is a part of the whole, leader, doctor, dentist, mother, even con artist (who gets a heart). We have some "government" over the ocean, just as the USA had England. But now, all ties have been severed. Perhaps the spirit voice that Ben and John hear is "liberty" asking to be freed. Oh well, just one thought of many.

The LOST ISLAND is NOT Hell or Purgatory. That was already CONFIRMED by the creators in the LOST FLASH BACK episodes. They CONFIRMED they are all LIVING and that's all they could say. But it has nothing to do with Hell, Aliens or anything like that!

I for one am happy Mike is coming back. I wonder if he teamed up with the boat that is on it's way, or if he got intercepted while on his way off the island.

Walt could be the one in the casket, here's why. He was let off the island by the Others, who said him and Michael were free to go. Ben and the Others lied about pretty much everything. They wanted Walt and they probably just grabbed him again. Again, it was a black neighborhood and a smaller casket, which both fit. Kate didn't show, yes, but she's a wanted felon. She couldn't show up. Also, who shows up as apparitions on the show? People who have died. When Locke saw Walt, he had died. Yes, the funeral was after they got off the island, but this wouldn't be the first time the show played with the timeline. I can kind of see the dead person being Michael if it's not Walt - he was Jack's last hope to get back to the island - but Walt just seems to fit much better. Then again, wasn't that Ben's diary next to the casket? OK, ABC, just tell us ... now.
Oh, and for the record, Charlie is dead and they are not stuck in hell. We saw Charlie go still after making the sign of the cross. He couldn't have survived that swim back up.

Dang it, someone actually mentioned "purgatory". Prepare yourself, you had this coming:

-The Season 2 ending was designed specifically to kill the theory once and for all. Computers are not capable of detecting electrical analomies from a supernatural location. DUH.
-Unless ghosts can know lift physical objects and run a major scientific facility, the Others are NOT ghosts. Richard and Ethan are seen in the outside world, and did things that ghosts cannot do.
-Naomi's comment about 815 being found. Gee, I dunno, a FAKE crash site? Unless you honestly believe all the bodies were recovered and checked for validity. Or, MAYBE Naomi's lying. Which was kinda suggested in the Season 3 finale.
-Cooper was abducted by the Others and brought to the Island. Any two year old should have figured that out.

I'm sorry for being rude, but it's almost like some fans don't really watch the show. People were still asking what the cable (coming out of the ocean) was long after Mikhail flat out explained it. Pay attention, people!

Is there anyone else who thinks maybe the "flash-forward" was a daydream? Or a dream-dream? I'm not convinced it's really the future. Maybe Jack was thinking about what his life would be like once he was rescued (because they were on a mission to get rescued and he thought it would work) and he got a little carried away? It is a little detailed... but these flashbacks are always in the character's minds.

Maybe the season 4 premiere will see Jack confiding to Kate/Juliet: "I had this dream.... it was so real."

BTW, what is up with Richard? And Jacob? I'm not as curious about who he is but why every "other" trusts him so much if no one has ever seen him except Ben (he asks everyone, "you don't trust me, but do you trust Ben?" and that shuts them up. why?

I always thought the island was impossible to be hell or purgatory. That was just the writers messing with fans heads, and it worked.

I think Ben is in the casket, and the "J" in the newspaper clipping was just a bad prop that was mistakenly made visible, or was it?

Jacks father is not dead, several clues lead to this; there was no body in the casket when Jack discovered it, (maybe the island brought him back to life, Jacks father didn't die on the island, as the same with Ben's Mother who was also seen alive and well after death on the Island)
In the flash forward Jack has a prescription from his father for Oxycodone (which could have been forged by Jack to get his fix).
Jack is blamed for being drunk in the hospital, and Jack responds "Get my father down here and see if he is more drunk than I am" (remember that was mentioned in the Flash forward).

Hurley wanted to find out the significance of the numbers that made him win the lottery. He found a woman who gave him some information about what her husband experienced about a mission they had to investigate. Personally I have to go back and watch this scene again, but there is some significance about this clue which may lead to some light about the island.

I think there was some type of research being done by some Faction that was meant to be top secret about the island (this is obvious).

The media printed false info provided by this Faction to preserve any secret about the island, by saying flight OCEANIC 815 crashed off the coast of Bali when in fact it crashed in the middle of the pacific ocean somewhere. The wreckage and bodies said to be found was a major job pulled off by the Faction. to conceal the real story.
According to Ben, he was somewhat right in saying that everyone would be killed, if any survivors were found on the island this Faction would kill them just to keep their story, but this wasnt the case, as we see Jack, Kate, Kate's flash forward boyfriend (who I think is Sawyer), and whoever is in the casket (Ben?) at the funeral Jack visited.

As for Walt, he has grown since the first season (3 years ago) in real life, so people stop stating how did he get taller in only one months time in TV time.

Whats up with Richard not aging a bit? he was just as youthful when Ben first met him as a kid, as he is when Ben is an adult.
Obviously Ben's Father aged. You see Ben's father in three differant age progressions (Ben Born, Ben Kid, Ben adult)

As for Jacob or J.A.C.O.B.?, I would guess he or it, is the entity that is the core of the island, and he is what the Hanso Foundation amongst others are investigating/studying. (Black mist, as well as other phenomonea on the island)
I havent seen any mention about Jacob or J.A.C.O.B.
in the forums. I think Jacob or J.A.C.O.B. is the real mystery, and everything else is just fill for plot purposes.

I am SO excited by this news. Michael could be of the strongest characters on the show in my opinion. Very untapped, but with a lot of potential.

I hope very strongly that Charlie isn't really dead. If I recall when Locke was having his spirit journey in the sweat lodge he came upon Charlie, Claire and Aaron and was told by Boone that they would be okay. How can that be true if Charlie is dead? (Maybe it's just wishful thinking. I think Charlie and Claire are adorable together).

Ryan from Phoenix - I don't think it could have been Sawyer in the casket. Kate and Jack were talking at the end about how Kate had to "get back to him" I'm pretty sure the 'him' is Sawyer.

The one thing I'm most confused about is.. why in the flash forward was Jack referring to his father like he was still alive? Isn't he supposed to be dead?

Ooh I can't wait for Season 4!

If you missed episodes of this past season and can't wait until the full season is released in November or December, then you can try I-tunes (they may still carry them) I doubt ABC.com still has any for back-viewing.. they usually only lasted a week or two before I-tunes made a profit on them. If you're willing to live dangerously, there's always Limewire.com and other free shareware programs with full hdtv widescreen-avi's of every episode.. but those are the options.

I don't much care for Michael's return, but Walt is a different story. Why would the Others be so desperate to get their hands on Walt, just to let him go later on.

Len, You can catch all the lost episodes and many other tv shows and films on www.tv-links.co.uk I found it quite recently and was blown away but the amount of content on there. The streaming can be a bit slow at times but if you pause the show when it starts and then let it download a while it plays lovely. Hope it helps and hope they hurry up with season 4.

I think it was Sawyer in the casket. His real first name is James, isn't it? He was sort of an outcast on the island, he and Jack could have gotten to be buddies off the island (that's why Jack took his death hard). Kate and Sawyer could have had a nasty breakup (Therfore the line Kate said nastily "Why would I go to the funeral?"). If it is Sawyer, who did Kate have to rush home to? And, why did Jack and Kate meet at the airport in secret? And my biggest question is, (and I originally thought the writers had made a mistake in the flashforward scene at the hospital with Jack) why did Jack make a reference to his father being drunk in the operating room and tell the chief to go get him when he should be LONG DEAD? That is a stumper to me. Can't wait for season 4!!!!!

Oh guys, good discussion. I never considered michael in the caket, always thought it was Ben...now Ive changed my mind. Even though I thought somewhere it was mentioned that the only person's funeral Hurley WOULDNT go to was Ben's, still changing my mind.

So what is the island? I think the island is the place they all crashed (no not in a plane, in their lives). They've all got personal issues to work out so that they can be ''found''. If they were to be resuced before dealing with these problems, well then they'd still be lost.
Once you've gotten over your issue, you make the list. The only two people who have been actively working on their issue are Jack and John. Its the good v. bad thing yeah. And thats why locke used to be on the list (ben got caught on his way to snatch him up) and was then removed. I thought I rememeber something about jack making the list too. Also explains why they took the kids from the tail section (too innocent to have life issues yet?). Oh and I think Ben USED to be on Jacob's list, but Locke is going to replace him as he descends to the ''dark side''. The moster on the island is probably the islands reaction to the progess your making in your struggle. Poor pilot (from Heroes!!) never even got a chance :(

Ok and whats up with the stewardess and others ''watching'' when Jack was in the Polar Bear cage? That was the only mention of that, or did i miss something?

When Ben said Michael and Walt "Would find rescue," he never said WHERE they would find it. 10 to 1, the "rescue" he meant was the freighter that Naomi came from. 10 to 1 Ben KNEW it was there and PURPOSELY sent Michael and Walt to it. Then when Naomi came back to the Island, she had brought Michael with her, and he was the thing they saw fall from the sky and splash into the water. And again, 10 to 1.....Season 4 is going to open with a man on the freighter looking out and seeing believe it or not, Michael and Walt approaching on that little boat.

richard alpert is really a 16th century explorer who found the fountain of youth and he and his crew had been the keepers of the island untill the dharma initiative found the island and took over for the valenzetti equation experiments to which desmond is the answear . richard asked ben to help lead the others because ben had as much hatred for the entire operation that to get to his dad he would sell out every one else. the pregnancy issue is that the indiginous tribe that originated on the island and richards crew married and had kids and eventualy found the islands properties had been polluted by dharma so the hired juliette to fix the problem. and desmond and locke are the key and the "lock" to the entire series. in the first and second episodes of season three locke is a pot farmer who picks up a undercover cop. in these episodes lock can walk , he has a sweat tent , has the eye scar , is happy , "was a hunter" then flashes to the island and he says i am a hunter , is happy when the undercover cop asks about lockes dad {he keeps smiling.} and walts first name was jeffery after micheals dad . walt was born with the powers that desmond received from turning the fail safe key. that is what walts powers are. that is why walt "appeared places he shouldn't have been". these two people are vital to the dharma initiative because they can travel in and around time in all directions , desmond can "travel" back in time and can glimpse into the future, where as walt can be in two places at once. they can overcome the valenzetti equation they are the answear together. locke is the equation , he is ever changing and allways remains the same he represents the island . jacob talked to lock instead of been because locke is listening to the island and wants the best and had more of a chance to "help" jacob and at the same time protect the island . jacob knew that ben is and was a liar a deceiver of his people , then came spiritual locke who knew there was "something special" about the island and believed with the faith of a child , and was not afraid of the smoke monster in season one when it tried to take him down into the island with the mechanical noises. and if the smoke monster is the security alarm then it should only go off at certain times or when some one is too close to something . and if it is cerebus , the keeper of the gate to the under world then it is strange that it tried to take locke UNDERGROUND! and jack had to drag him out and locke was upset.

I think the body in the casket is Aron's. Only Aron could be small enough or big enough by that time to fit in it. (Assuming that it was a flash forward). And Charlie left his ring with Aron, The others tried to kidnap Aron. And if you think about the psychic who told Claire that she must not let others to raise Aron, it might be applicable. What might make Aron special is his birthday. Maybe Jacob's body is reincarnated in Aron's. Otherwise, why would they have Claire and Aron around in Season 3 let alone 4? There must be a purpose. Desmond also said Clarie and Aron will be rescued and leave in a helicopter.

Charlie's chamber would have only filled to an inch higher than the top of the porthole. He would have had a pocket of air to breathe and tread in, and swim out when he's ready. But they pretty definitively showed him 'drowned'. So, almost definitely we will see Charlie ala flashes back/forward only, if at all.

I think the funeral was for Ben, not Walt. As many have stated, Kate's resentment for Walt wouldn't make any sense. Jack said the victim was neither family nor friend, and the other losties seem to hate this person. I suppose this could be Michael, but that seems too boring. Everbody's theories will be wrong. The writers and creators and producers etc. have it all planned out. The show from the very first episode has been leading up to every new twist and turn. Each season will be better than the previous ones because the mystery is greater and the plot is thicker. all these theories are okay, but why rule out hell/purgatory? agreeing with the guy maybe we just clocked on too early, its not like they are going to tell us if we guess right! people you are still not explaining the unexplained like how a handicap is able to walk again (locke) why wounds heal faster, the resent leak on a time bubble seems ever more likely tho to me and someone posted this:
