Honestly, I have never heard this song, but I don't think I have ever confused lyrics that badly.
I just wanted to comment on how people leave comments about how this was a waste of their time and we should debate about more important things.... Go away! I am at work and bored out of my mind. I've read all of the articles I can on the war and politics and Osama. Let me debate about something ridiculous and entertaining, and if you don't like it go find a thread about global warming or something! Comment about the blog or don't comment at all.

Thank you! I was driving home two days ago and "Blinded By the Light" came on, which I hadn't heard it in years. But I still had the same problem with the lyrics that you mentioned, and that I always had. I listened as closely as I could and could not for the life of me come up with any other word for that but "douche" and I knew it couldn't be that! Thanks for clarifying - I'll never forget deuce now, and thank God, I can sing something else besides "douche"! I never knew what any of those words were. Weird, weird song.

This turned into a running joke at my office. I've got the Kissthisguy.com desk calendar....only the lyric featured on the calendar was "She ripped up her douche in the middle of the night." So I gave it to my friend who adores Springsteen and she just about fell out of her chair laughing.
Of course I always thought it was "Revved up like a douche, another roller in the night." Not that it made any sense but it was fun to sing. Sometimes the misheard song lyrics are better than the real ones. The end of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," to me, will always be "Bloody night owl" rather than "A denial". So, Gael, I say hold on to your pompitice of love if you want to and to heck with what everyone else says.

A deuce is a 32 Ford that has been "Hotrod"ed. Another runner in the night refers to guys who participate in street racing.

Springsteen apparently is/was a motor head evidenced in Born to Run.

"In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream. At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines. Sprung from cages out on highway 9, Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line" and "Beyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard".

Now a curly-wurly is a chocolate and carmel candy bar (Cadburys version of the classic Marathon bar). Not quite sure how that fits into the song or the car/street racing theme. Not sure how Early-Pearly was driving that candy bar either as an Early-Pearly is a type of flower.

Three years later a friend and I tried to decipher the Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown" at my fraternity house in early 1966. I have to stop reading this at work. I burst out laughing twice. I remember when "Every Breath You Take" first came out and every one thought Sting was singing "I'm a pool-hall ace" instead of "How my poor heart aches."

I never heard the anus line...always thought it was "little early pearly came by in his curly wurly." I thought the other line was "wrecked up like a douche, another runner in the night," which of course makes no sense.

Elton John slurs his words a lot. There was one song I really wanted to know the words to, can't remember what it was right now, but I had to rewatch the video a bunch of times so I could read his lips to figure out what the line was.

I'm fortunate that I was aware of the lyrics of Blinded By The Light from Bruce's Greeting From Asbury Park album, 3 years prior to Manfred Mannh's hit cover version. The distorted vocals on Manfred's version only added to the confusion of the lyrics. Any suggested reference to Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is absurd, since it wasn't even released until later on in 1976, several months after Manfred Mann's hit left the charts. Stragely enough, I believe Blided is the only Bruce Springsteen composed song to ever reach the top of the charts.

On Storytellers (VH1) Springsteen said he wrote that song when he was young and needed a single for his record, so he took out a thesaurus and just started coming up with rhymes. He said the reason Manfred Mann had a hit with it instead of him is that he sang "deuce" and they sang "douche." Given a choice between a car and a feminine hygiene product, "the public has spoken!" He also said that the fact he wrote this song goes a long way to explaining why he never did drugs--he was already pretty far out there without 'em!

In the 80's, we changed the Madness song to "Outhouse, in the middle of our street". And my sister always thought chorus to The Rodeo Song by David Allan Coe was:

A song that many have probably never heard, but that I was exposed to in college is a classic Irish/Celtic folk song called "Star (Of the County Down)", about a girl named Rosie McCann who was apparently considered something of a star (in the entertainment sense of the word) in the County Down in Ireland. Now, there's one lyric in it that, the first time I heard it, made me do a double take because I wasn't sure what I was hearing; the line was (actually):
"Sure the coaxin' elf,
I'd to shake meself to be sure I was standing there."

Which I heard as:
"Sure the coaxin' elf,
I'd to SHAG meself to be sure I was standing there."

I soon realized my mistake after listening to the song more carefully and looking up the lyrics online, but the damage was done; I still have to consciously remind myself when I listen to that song that it's "shake", not "shag".

Semolina Pilchard was a reference to some sort of medicine those guys had to take when they had a cold way back when in the late 40's. I'm sittin' here unwinding after work, and this whole thing has me hurting myself! every comment, regardless of the song involved, is great! thanks for a really fun way to spend a few minutes!! I always loved Creedence, Bad Moon Rising, "There's a bad moon on the rise" which everyone I know said was "there's a bathroom on the right" I saw John Fogerty 2 years ago, and he made a real point of singing "there's a bathroom on the right" and enunciating it very clearly so we would get the joke. Also heard him do the same thing on Austin City Limits. Way to go John!

little off topic but related. When I was in high school, I worked at the local drive in, and we showed Damien the Omen II about a hundred times. There's a scene when the liitle devil is walking away after offing his family, and there's choral classical playing in the soundtrack that I always swore said "Damien, pantyhose, Damien, pantyhose, Damien Pantyhose. It was on TV a few weeks ago, and I laughed out loud just thinking about ut.

I heard a blurb on the radio from a guy who was in Manfred Man & he claimed the "douche" came from over production of the song when they recorded it. They were on a deadline to get the album released, so they weren't allowed to fix it. The bandmembers thought it sounded like douche as well, how embarrassing...

I always thought that song had some similarities to the book "Something Wicked This Way Comes". I don't even remember who wrote it, but I remember reading it in grade school. It was about 2 boys and a mysterious carnival that came to town and I think it turned one of the boys into an old man or something.
