Her performances over the past two weeks have shown a real lack of knowledge and appreciation of the music she chose. How do you sing "Love Hangover" and totally skip the uptempo part?? This week's song she sang better in the rehearsal with Lulu (anybody else think Lulu looks absolutely fabulous?). Steph was much too careful and reserved in her delivery of the song on Tuesday night, as if she didn't know who Dusty Springfield was. It reminded me of Kimberly Locke in season 2, singing the great Bacharach song "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and complaining that she didn't understand the song or know what it means. Totally turned me off her, even though she could sing quite well. If you don't know anything about the song you're singing, how in the world do you expect to communicate it to the listener? Great vocals alone won't do it - you've got to connect with the audience. As for the rest, I hope Gina sticks around - I like her even though I didn't particularly enjoy her performance this week. Sure Sanjaya's not on the same level as the more experienced contestants, but I'm glad to see him finally come out of his shell. It's a popularity contest plain and simple. Many of the contestants each season stink, even the ones that go all the way. Is singing a talent? Yes, but one that is learned. If you think about it, there have been a LOT of performers who weren't the best singers, but were great stars. Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Carol Channing et al. However, I think he is much better then Haley Scarnato and Phil Stacey. They both have good voices, but they are just week singers. Especially Haley, an idol should be strong; and she just isn't. And many people are voting for him because they see something in him, such as shyness, that they see in themselves. And they admire how he's trying to come out of his shell. I think not. Controversy aside, he has his summer set touring the and US making money no matter when he gets voted off. Wouldn't you still try for the big pay off if you were in his shoes? He sings a little too softly and he has some maturing to do, but I give him major respect for continuing on the show when he has faced such cruel comments. Idol is not just a 'singing competition' as they say, it is more of a popularity contest - but if you can't sing well, you probably won't be popular either. Every season there are favourites and people are stunned and upset about someone getting voted off early (or not voted off early). Think about it. EVERY year. This year, both Stephanie AND Sabrina should have stayed longer (Brandon too). They were more talented than Haley, Chris R, Phil, Gina, and yes, even Sanjaya. In my opinion, Blake if the 'coolest' and most unique on the show in years, but not the best 'singer' (that would be Melinda or Lakisha). It does not matter if he can sing or not (industry speaking). What matters is that FOX keeps you coming back so they can sell more advertisements to its supporters. Idol's True purpose is not about discovering new talent, its promo hype to sell more tv commercials and have the best TV ratings, as they use the ones we see on stage as their puppets. (even the talented ones) Then guess what? The record companies gets their chances next. Once a name has become nationally recognized, thats all the music industry will need, to sell the albums. As far as the talent, the industry has many many toys to make someone sound perfect in a studio environemnt for a CD. Once that CD is produced,if marketed properly, it will sell at least a million from folks just curious to see what it sounded like. Its how the whole music (and TV in this case) industry works these days. Its all based on who they can make the fastest dollar on, with the least amount of investment, if someone is talented, thats a plus, but not necessary these days. If IDOL gets a singers name and a recognized face out there good enough, the music industry has a sure bet to make money off of it too. The sad part of it all? We now have an industry out there that values high profits over the true arts . ..and when we contribute to it (supporting, buying CD's, etc) we are giving our vote of confidence for them to keep doing what is being done. I think we all realize he does not have the vocal technique that AI requires of its competitors. It's obviously what a whole lot of people want to see. Sanjaya is a small person with a small, quiet voice and an endearing personality. He might not be your "cup of tea" but then you're probably not a fan of Nora Jones either, and she seems to be doing just fine with a sound not that unsimilar to Sanjaya's. Singers usually know what style their voice is suited to and sing only in this style.
